Making the switch to serving?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SSDGM-cool-cat
Any former Sbux shifts here quit and start working as a server?
Pros, cons, big bad idea, pretty good idea, etc?
I’m debating between staying at Sbux at my new SSV rate of $19/hr at about 30 hrs/week or starting as a server at a popular, highly rated local brewery/restaurant at a comparable 4-5 shifts per week.
Thoughts??
Details about this specific restaurant: -Flexible -Locally owned -Locally sourced food -Insurance offered -Guaranteed 4-5 shifts weekly -Not a corporate giant -Not soul-sucking
Concerns: -I don’t want to abandon my team -I feel bad for my sweet manager -I just started as an SSV a couple months ago (been with Sbux 1 yr total) and don’t want to be a tease and just leave so soon -I don’t enjoy the work itself (but I DO enjoy service work in general)

Do whatever’s best for your own future.
I’d say that serving can definitely be more stressful than being an SSV but from the situation you’ve described, it does seem like a far better deal at the moment (especially if your new environment is supportive). I’m not sure what your local brewery/restaurant is like in terms of tips, but when I used to work at a high-end restaurant, one night’s worth of tips would easily be above $300. Good money, just stressful af since you had to be on top of your game every single moment.
What you could possibly do is take a week off from Starbucks (use sick time if possible) and work a full week at the new place and see if it’s agreeable with you before making a final decision.

my boyfriend was the exact same as you. he worked at our store for a year, and 6 months of those were as a SSV. he worked 38 hrs/week and it sucked his soul out and spat it back up lol. he switched to serving and he loves it!
he’s on his feet and constantly busy a LOT MORE than as a SSV, sometimes tips suck, he is expected to upsell alcohol and add ons to every table, and he doesn’t get 10 min breaks. however, he loves this aspect of customer service and actually getting to interact more with custies! no matter what he comes home with hella money and he barely works 5-6 hour shifts. we are lucky to live in california and be paid the $15/hr on top of the tips though, so keep that in mind. he also doesn’t really have to talk to coworkers or anything which he really likes because sometimes the barista drama was a lot. he is the happiest i’ve ever seen him if that says anything !!!

i also think it is important to note that my boyfriend is obviously a boy and presents as such. he gets rude customers but they are not nearly as horrible as i imagine they’d be to a female server. i’d know cus my mom was one for half my life. feminine presenting people just get the most shit from people in the food service industry unfortunately. so that’s another thing to keep in mind

I waitressed during college, personally I found it more soul sucking. And to a point you have rely on people being generous, cause you usually make $3 an hour. You think starbucks customers are bad? Hungry people are even worse and you're adding alcohol. And people will literally treat you like you're their servant and you should be happy they're running you like a dog. That being said I made great money, especially at the time (it's been over a decade). I have a friend that makes bartends twice a week and made over $40,000 in one summer. But they were in a tourist town. I thought about trying to get a LOA and joining them this summer, but don't want the stress.
Could you maybe work both for a bit, to see if it's going to be a good fit?
