What is a reasonable starting wage to ask for? (metro area) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by throwaway_bfgift
Hello! Sorry if this type of post isn’t allowed or if y’all get asked this a lot.

I just applied for several part time open barista positions in Tampa. I’m fairly certain I will do well in the interview and eventually get hired (due to similar food service experience/certifications)

If they ask, what would be a reasonable hourly wage to request in my area? What pay ranges have you guys seen?

I know it’s part time, but given my location, experience, and the current economy, I feel that 15$ an hour is a reasonable expectation. According to glassdoor, the wages in my area are 14-111$ an hour (lmao) so I figured I should ask the baristas themselves.

Thanks in advance guys and keep up the good work!

Unfortunately Starbucks doesn't really negotiate starting wages.

All baristas in your location at a Starbucks will make the same starting wage, and will be raised the same together. What you’re looking online for wages an hour are inaccurate for a Starbucks, and the place is no different from a McDonald’s in the way it’s like fast food coffee and you don’t negotiate any wage.

all stores should have a minimum of 15 starting august 1

Starting august 1st, $15 will be the starting pay for all baristas nationwide. Also as others have mentioned Starbucks does not typically negotiate wages.

There is actual wiggle room with starting wage. I started at a corporate store at a higher rate, because I had experience at a Target Starbucks team lead. We also had a barista from a local place start at a higher slightly starting wage.
It depends a lot on the store and district manager. My store manager thought I deserved more, but the DM wouldn't budge as it was already at the start of the high end and didn't want me at the max.

My store's starting wage is already over $15 on August it's going up a certain percentage. Since it's a metro area, it might be higher than $15.
