any recommendations for switching to mornings? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by krasantho
with my school schedule coming up (and me having to focus more since applications are due to my program the same year) i’m switching to mornings. since working, i’ve been a closer (started in 2019 in HS, left the co., came back in 2022) and i’m just starting to switch to mornings.
is there any recommendations for the schedule change and how i can manage it (both professionally and personally?) how does your sleep schedule look like when you open?

Coming from someone who’s been an opener for the last two years, it’s gonna take some time to adjust. It may be tough, but waking up an hour earlier than when you’re supposed to leave has been my biggest saving grace. This gives me more time to wake myself up or even snooze in a few more minutes. I usually go to bed around 8 or 9 (early I know). For the nights I had trouble sleeping, I would take a melatonin because the last thing I need is to work when I didn’t sleep much. If you open, drink some coffee while you get your prep done. If you come in after open, allow yourself some extra time to get some coffee/food to get yourself in work mode.

As far as professionally, the biggest thing is to not complain about it. Everyone else also has to be there as early as you and complaining about it doesn’t help. If you feel everyone around you is sluggish, pass some nitro shots around!! It engages partners and gives you guys a little boost! Good luck with the early shifts !

I definitely agree with getting up an hour earlier than when you need to leave or adjust to what feels right for you. I like to be able to have time to mess around on my phone and leave extra time for my commute, but having that extra time helps for the rare occasion I oversleep and to mentally prepare. I’m probably insane because I work another job so I don’t get to sleep until 9 at the very earliest, but I also don’t open quite as frequently as I once did.

Getting up at 3 am is my go to for opening shifts. Sleeping around 8/9 at the latest will set u up for success in not feeling like a zombie and being prepared for a busy day of work n school. Also having your uniform ready to go will save u time as well🫶🏼

getting into the groove of waking up early SUCKS and it’s also hard to fall asleep early when ur not used to it. personally i’d recommend some melatonin pills or gummies to help you get on the right sleep schedule :)

Know that you will be super tired from the work load as well as the sleep pattern difference for a couple of weeks. It’s a much faster pace.

my advice is gonna vary depending how how early your morning is going to be. for example, are you going to be opening mornings or are you going to be mid-morning (7am type morning)

once that’s figured out, i can give proper advice
