Availability/Time Off Requests Denied, Manager Cites Being Understaffed (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by No_Ad_349
I’m a barista at Starbucks making minimum wage, and I got this job because it was supposed to be flexible and work with my schedule. I recently needed to make a change to my availability because I’m starting a second job soon, but my manager denied it citing our store not having the necessary coverage. Same with partners requesting time off. We’re being overworked, underpaid and then not being given the days off we need? Why are we expected to bare the brunt of poor management and the simple fact that Starbucks is not an appealing place to work? Is anyone else dealing with this?

Definitely not your problem that they can’t find people to cover

They legally can deny availability and time off. You sign off that it's business needs come first. That being said a good manager will work with you as much as possible. My SM and several shifts have been working 6 days a week to make sure people are getting their time off. And very rarely tells people their availability won't work. We had someone get hired saying they'd have open availability and wanted 40 hrs. Then as soon as training was over, they wanted to something super specific and exactly the same every single week.

Yes, I’m aware they legally can bend us over and f*ck us if they wanted because that’s capitalism, baby! 👉👉

But yeah, I’ll probably just quit since I could literally go anywhere else and make the same amount or more lmao

You say that you’re making minimum wage…. Is that in a state with a higher minimum wage than the average of the country, or are you at a licensed SBUX?

How long have you worked there?

Three years. It’s never been an issue until now.

I hate saying this but I would reach out to the DM. Second jobs is a very valid reason as opposed to most that just want a particular shifts or days off. It’s possible the SM could ask others who aren’t working a second job to be flexible with their schedules until they hire up. Three years is a long time and should be valued for that commitment.
