you know something that really grinds my beans is “chai tea.” chai is tea so it really translates to “tea tea.” i cringe so horribly every time i see chai tea on the pos and whenever a custy orders a chai tea.

Yes technically chai means tea. However here chai is also a certain type of tea. It is a specific flavor. Just like you have mint, jasmine, peach, and then you have chai.
Took me a long time to realize that chai is a also a specific flavor or people refer too. So if you corrected a customer and told them they just asked for tea tea how would you ask them what flavor they wanted?

i know, it’s just one of those silly things. it reminds me of saying “naan bread” or anything along those lines.
so what i’m saying is, it’d make more sense to just say a chai latte. because while chai of course refers to the flavor chai, it also means tea. when someone orders a “chai tea” i of course understand that they’re referring to chai.

If it makes it better for you mentally, it isn’t because it’s chai tea (although that is a way a lot of the country does it), it’s because it’s a Chai Tea Latte. “Chai” is the flavor, “Tea Latte” is the type of drink.
Like It’s officially a “London Fog Tea Latte”, a “Royal English Breakfast Tea Latte” (See how they actually dropped the Second “Tea” that would have intrinsically been in the name?), or a “Custom Tea Latte”!
Although that does make me do questionable squints at “Matcha Green Tea Latte”.
I know it’s because this just proves your point that Americans are stupid when it comes to tea, and we have to remind people that it’s gonna be HELLA green.
