the amount of times i have to hold back tears on the floor…….. or hug my other partners after a shift saying “guys we made it”……….. not ok
Buttafly_3602 points11m ago
Honestly OP, I FELT THAT!!
tittywhipp1 points11m ago
Why? Like what happens on your shift?
diphenhydranautical [OP]2 points11m ago
the last two sundays (during peak) we’ve only had four people scheduled… so many call outs… people who don’t know what they’re doing so you constantly have to do their job/clean up after them too… our former asm was once trying to bully me off of morning shifts… customers banging on the door and swearing at us because cafe is closed… scheduling us skeleton crews so one call out royally screws us over, and we get nothing done… i have one shift who is notorious for not doing anything and will just disappear without telling anyone… currently in a transitional period with managers and our new SM is an outside hire who was just thrown to the wolves… yeah all sorts of things go wrong at my store
initially i didn’t think it was so bad, but as time has gone on it’s only gotten worse

Are you a shift?

it 100% depends on your staff/management
my store is currently transitioning between managers and our new manager is an outside hire. we don’t even have an asm right now either. my store is also staffed very unevenly, i’m one of the handful people who open on weekends so i’m opening every weekend and it’ll just be like 4 of us sometimes during peak. but if you have a competent manager and team then it can be fun

The environment makes the store. We have the best SM and shift supervisors and fellow baristas. And good customers. They make work worth it. But other stores, not really.
Toomanyboringpeople2 points11m ago
Yeah absolutely to what they’re saying about environments! I am currently on my second home store, and I LOVE my job now. My SM has been here for 20 years, she knows her crap, and my team is amazing and supportive. At my last store, I cried most days on the drive home. It really depends, but don’t be discouraged, just like there are plenty of bad stores out there, there are also plenty of great ones!!
Nraveles113 points11m ago
As someone said, environment and management make the store. I wanna die at my store lol

I personally enjoy going to work. I have a good SM and a good DM . I also love my daily customers they make my day. Peaks can get pretty stressful and beat the absolute shit out of you sometimes but . With the right conditions it's a super fun job

Starbucks is a way-station. You will find or create your next move as soon as you realize that Starbucks is no longer helpful and is actually destroying your will to live! Some get out before the suffering begins but that’s not how the strongest among us roll; we suffer it and suffer it until we realize that the company we are suffering for is not actually in a partnership with us, because no matter how much we suffer, not one non retail level employee or shareholder is suffering along with you. Try applying for a role in retail banking, they, like nursing and teaching are having real trouble with staffing and you come from a place that’s very similar!

i’ve been looking for a new job for a while, but the place i’m really vying for & hoping to turn into a career isnt hiring quite yet. i’m trying to stick it out since our raise goes into effect tomorrow, and my store just got new management, but every day i get closer and closer to not coming back. i’m already working another job and combined with starbucks, it’s just awful
boothbygraffoe5 points11m ago
It is an awful, soul crushing demoralizing job that happens to include a few fleeting moments of positive engagement with coworkers and clients. It is not for everyone and it is not a viable long term solution. The most important things it will teach are: how much can I tolerate followed by how much will I tolerate. I was there 3 years in my late teens and it was by no means my worst job but it was the one that felt the worst at the time and it was likely the one that fucked with self esteem and mental health the most. None of what I’m sharing is meant to help you in any way other than to make clear that you’re not alone in this, the company and job have been making people feel this way for decades now, but the vast majority of us survive and go on to do other things. The lucky among find something we love. You will leave when you are ready and or when it’s just too much but please make sure that departure doesn’t happen at a time of financial precariousness, because that will just make it harder to succeed in your transition. Treat it like an abusive relationship (because…), plan and execute your exit on your terms but make it bandaid removal quick, because there’s no other way!

thank you ❤️ it makes me sad knowing how many other partners feel this way & deal with the same shit. many of us work so hard.
