I hate to say it, but water is free (including ice).
When people ask for more than water/ice, then they are using actual products. My store used to run out of the various berries because people (mainly teens) drained us. It also prevents people from abusing our system. They can’t add syrups without paying for it.
I do agree that it’s also corporate greed. They can easily add a button that says “water with berry inclusions” and charge them for whatever amount of money.
If they get upset, then they can go to a different store or make their own raspberry water at home

We charge for a syrup. Water is free but has a button that way we can charge for pumps or scoops bc people be trying to finesse free flavored water with fruit inclusions
canidieyet_3 points11m ago
also, do the berries actually add flavor or what??
luvduvbunny5 points11m ago
I really don’t think berries add flavor. They seem to be just there for looks
Playful_Sector1 points11m ago
I mean, fruit infused water is a thing but I'm pretty sure it's the juice from the fruit that flavors it. Since these are dehydrated, I'm gonna guess they barely add flavor, if they do at all.
canidieyet_1 points11m ago
Yeah! I love using fresh fruit to make whatever flavor water. I just can’t imagine the dried berries make a difference lol. some people like to eat them so maybe that’s it?

according to Starbucks,
>When ringing beverages, it is important to always ring up a base beverage as we do not sell modifiers only as beverages. i.e. If a customer requests a water with syrup, inclusions and ice, ring as follows: > >Select size, select custom iced tea, sub requested syrup, no black tea base, add inclusion
Why? Just because it’s water with a scoop of berries, someone still has to prepare it and put it in a cup. That person doesn’t work for free, nor does the partner ringing it up, etc. The plastic cups aren’t free to Starbucks, the electricity used to run the ice machine isn’t free, nor is the filter water.
The base beverage takes into account all the inherent sunk costs of the operation and the variable costs of that drink.

Starbucks will be absolutely fine losing out on some cups and strawberries lolololol why are you taking up so hard for a corporation?
Playful_Sector1 points11m ago
We all know Starbucks can tank the cost of some berries, the other guy was just explaining corporate's reasoning and why they don't allow it
Humble-Hedgehog9546-19 points11m ago
Because the cups are free to each and every other customer who orders water with ice. We don't charge them a cup fee. So adding the berries scoop should only cost the amount of the berries considering every other customer who got the exact same thing -berries it was entirely free for them.
rudebii28 points11m ago
Pure water is provided as a courtesy and because it’s generally agreed that everyone should have access to potable water at no charge.
Adding things to water makes it a beverage and Starbucks sells beverages.
ItzBoogieMan26 points11m ago
Unfortunately this is the only way to prevent groups of teenage kids ordering water with strawberries only. Like that’s just soggy strawberries, idk what’s appealing about that. Our store ran out of strawberry inclusions one summer because groups of kids just kept ordering it.
Humble-Hedgehog9546-29 points11m ago
I understand how its beneficial for some stores, its just ridiculous at the same time though.
PercyGabriel112915 points11m ago
I think part of it is that every drink has a hidden "labor" number, aka how much labor goes into making it. Waters have a very small, insignificant value, while custom teas have a much larger value. And you may not think that adding berries isuch more labor, but that labor value gets added up and allows your SM to schedule more people because your store is working "harder."
Kivic25 points11m ago
I think the main thing here is make sure you do it correctly to help your baristas out at other stores. If one store allows it then we will see the “the other starbucks” does it reply.
Is it stupid? Sure. Is it policy? Yes. Help your fellow partners out. That way they don’t get chewed out for following policy.
Humble-Hedgehog9546-18 points11m ago
I'm not going to just let a fellow barista screw up just to be a jerk or because I don't agree.
5AV1OR5 points11m ago
?? 125cars is saying you are screwing up by selling them waters add inclusions. Standard is if they want flavored water you charge them for a custom iced tea because that is what it is. Inclusions are 50 cents based on the fact that they are being ADDED to a purchased drink, not that someone is just buying a scoop of inclusions.
Kivic2 points11m ago
Oh I wasn’t saying you were. It’s more of a PSA for all baristas. I’m on your side that it’s stupid haha
jazzysoranio16 points11m ago
This has been a point of contention for years. The correct way is to ring it up as a custom tea.
But you are absolutely right for being confused because THERE’S NO TEA in it so it doesn’t make sense! And to make it even worse, the customer can see that you’re ringing in “tea” and they’re very likely to get upset about it because now they think that YOU’RE the one who is overcharging them and so they get mad at YOU and call you dumb and accuse you of not knowing how to do your job. And the problem is that even though the customer is wrong to do that, it’s also understandable that they would be upset because they’re being charged for tea when they didn’t order any tea. If I went to a restaurant and only ordered fries but also got charged for a burger I would understandably be upset, and no amount of “oh, well the rule is that if you only order fries we have to also charge you for a burger” would not be a good enough explanation.
Corporate could easily just update the system so that we could actually ring up what the customer ordered “water with berries” and it would charge them the right amount. But instead they choose to have us ring it up in a way that sets up customers to get upset at us.
But yeah, the only explanation for why we ring up a custom tea for something that is just water with berries in it is really just “because corporate says so.”
Humble-Hedgehog9546-2 points11m ago
Corporate just is greedy at this damn point. Theres no tea, there's no hard labor of shaking it, there's no lemonade and there's no syrup. The berries are charged and accounted for inventory so it really makes absolutely no sense other than for money. It makes no sense.
humiddefy1 points11m ago
I kind of suspect they just don't want to sell an ingredient by itself and thus are just closing the door to debate by instituting this draconian policy
blackcatcaptions13 points11m ago
Do they pay you enough to care this much? Starbucks isn't an identity. We just give them their drinks, take their money, and do what the corporate Overlords tell us to do
Humble-Hedgehog95461 points11m ago
Thought we could vent about dumb things about our jobs here, guess not man. My bad.
blackcatcaptions1 points11m ago
Sorry, I didn't mean to come off as an ass. Not my intention. Vent away. I literally have to tell myself what I stated above, otherwise Starbucks and it's annoying custies would drive me nuts.
Playful_Sector1 points11m ago
That's the point of the sub, but this is one of those things that doesn't hurt us. If you really want to only charge them for the fruit, ring up a regular water, and then seperately from that, a short cup with fruit inclusions.
That said, I personally agree with this policy and think this is just another tiktok trend of people trying to get (really weak) refreshers for free
vanilllacakez6 points11m ago
Fr ! A lady came through w her pet duck and I ended up just not charging her for it .. I know we should but idk 4.95 or whatever it is is a bit much. If it was someone who came regularly than yes but like I never get water w berries ordered
Humble-Hedgehog95467 points11m ago
Its only happened where I've had it ordered twice this year. One was for a kid who was like 3 and wanted a pretty drink like their moms. In that case I shook it for them to make it pink (that was my choice tho) but I cant imagine charging for a tea for that regularly
Playful_Sector1 points11m ago
Anyone who comes to my store with a pet duck is definitely getting a free drink from me
siestasierra3 points11m ago
doesn’t really matter if you don’t agree with it, just do your job 🤷♀️
SmittyComic3 points11m ago
tea is just stuff in water, all it's ever been.
we charge for that.
jesthere3 points11m ago
Been this way for a long time.
peepeepoopaccount3 points11m ago
Yeah idek but this shit is why I hate being on register. I hate making customers mad at me for corporate greed cause starbucks loves to nickel and dime customers.
piIIowtalk2 points11m ago
Well the whole time I’ve been working here we also rang it up like that. I was told it was because Inclusion are built into the prices of the refreshers so it doesn’t matter if they want extra in those drinks. But like a bag cost like $20 each so like we can’t be selling water with like 10 scoops for $1
tiredbarista00042 points11m ago
It's stupid, but unfortunately we have to :/ I wish we could ring it in for inclusion costs and not a whole custom tea though
