Is there any store that has a manager that takes their shift staff to dinner or does little things like that to boost moral?

Is there anyone here that has a good manager that listens and supports them as a partner?

My Store manager doesn't really take us to dinner or any of that (there's probably some fraternization rules against that I'm assuming, not to mention schedule conflicts) but he's a genuinely great person and does so much to support us. I'm a shift at my store and I feel like I excel because I have him as a role model. We aren't the best store, and morale isn't always great, but he does his best!

Oh that's cool though!! How does he make you feel supported?
PercyGabriel1129 4 points 11m ago
He almost always answers his phone when I call him for help (I know that's in his job description technically, but I've heard that A LOT of SMs don't or refuse to). He's constantly trying to make the work place more user-friendly (or barista-friendly if you will). He just genuinely cares about us and will try to get to know every one of us. He will hop on the floor if we need help and he's there scheduled as admin. He does a great job or pointing us to resources so we alcan become more self reliant, which helps to not stress too much when we get into a rough situation because we can confidently know what to do. There's so much more but that's just off the top of my head!

My manager has bought us McDonald’s, hosted a party at a partners house for Christmas, he’s the best manager I’ve ever had! Most of my partners (myself included) say if he goes, we’ll walk! Everyone loves him, he’s caring, he jokes with us, and he’s always willing to help us, when he sees we’re low on staff and he’s scheduled as admin, he’ll grab his apron and jump on the floor and go to any position, when one of us call in for not feeling well, he’ll text or call not because he wants to know when we’re coming back to work but because he genuinely cares about us and wants to see how we are! When he goes on vacation with his family, he’ll send texts to see how the store is and all of us are or just send pictures of his vacation and say hi in our group chat!

My store manager will make house calls when you are sick to deliver home cooked food or groceries. During covid lockdown they were so supportive of isolating partners organizing porch drops for coffee markouts and emergency supplies.

Wow! Really. Now that's looking through the lens of humanity

I have been pretty lucky. Most of my SM's with SBux have been really supportive. There have been 1 or 2 that were going through some stuff, and not present on the job, but nothing worth getting worked up over.

That's so nice. I really love that for you (: like honestly. I'm glad they are still out there.

My first store I worked at had an absolutely amazing manager! she always brought in treats for us or if we had a great OSHA review she would give us all gift cards. One day she noticed a few of us talking about walking in the mornings (we all lived relatively close to each other) and she said she would join us and be our support system. She also did fun things like have a pumpkin decorating contest during Halloween and customers got to vote on their favorite one and who ever one got a bucket full of candy. She was always super sweet and cheering us on no matter what we did. She even helped some of us study that were in the college program.

Our store manager has bought us pizza and we had a store bbq, she tries to increase morale, but she is a very aggressive mean person and I’m literally scared of her, so she tries but it doesn’t work.
ddebdesdemonaa 2 points 11m ago
Mine is very supportive and listens to everything , she’s thrown us a pizza party too and brings us treats all the time.

Not to dinner but I have bought numerous pizzas, tacos, and wings throughout my year. I did take my SSV’s to Dave and Busters for 4 hours last month.

I am curious what you think would boost moral?
tittywhipp [OP] 1 points 11m ago
Long story short, I came from a store where my SM was Starbucks Standards to a T. She held herself, her partners and her customers all to the values that Starbucks promotes. I had to move and unfortunately the culture that has built into the store is so toxic it is almost vile. Crews are fighting back and forth, no one knows standards, it's a complete madhouse.

I have taken my supervisors to dinner before.

last holiday season our whole store went out bowling, and on launch days or holidays (or just randomly) he’ll bring in bagels from this amazing shop nearby
kaynist 1 points 11m ago
my store manager is p good. before the holiday launch last yr we closed the store early and had a pizza party w games and nametag decorating and stuff. we're hoping to do another one soon but its hard to get approval for that sort of thing from the DM.
Zealousideal_Yam6226 1 points 11m ago
My SM has paid for things like bowling for us, but has never attended. I think there's rules against that.

you don't have problems keeping baristas because they "don't want to work," i can gaurantee that much. i hope you heavily revise the way you think.
Spiritual_Resource36 10 points 11m ago
I’m very happy you don’t manage my store! You can’t “hold” people not because they don’t want to work but because you’re not managing properly (or maybe you’re just a shit person).

At my store, the manager has everyone’s back, from the green beans to the more-tenured shifts. She treats us like actual human beings and is respectful of our availability. As a result, lots of the baristas here are loyal to her and have zero issues covering for each other and my store has a really strong culture. Everything starts from the SM down - they’re the ones that set the tone for how things at the store should be done. Most important thing she does is communicate with everyone and keep people in the loop. It might seem like a low bar but it means a lot to be upfront with your partners. So it’s not that people don’t want to work - I assure you, they do, they just don’t want to work for YOU lmfao

Novel idea: as a barista, I do 5x the amount of work they pay me Pennies for.
lilmissambersue 5 points 11m ago
People just don't want to work in a negative environment.... My last SM would constantly say that but also not be in the store for days and weeks at a time on vacation....talk about not wanting to work.

When they would return to a store that functioned very well because we are all adults and can do our jobs effectively, only to tell us the teeny tiny things that were not done or not done "well" We are short staffed. Always. People transferred or got better paying jobs BECAUSE of negative management that lowered moral. I feel like this could be what's happening at your store? We were also told there isn't a moral problem, there's a work ethic problem. So very not true.

People leaving to better paying jobs or transferring could be a sign to you that maybe there's more that could be done other than "welp, no one wants to work"
OneRoseDark 4 points 11m ago
ah yes, the siren song of the capitalist: people just don't wanna work.

and that's why as a species we have such a deep need to be useful and constantly find ways to be productive on our own. and go literally insane when quarantining. and are constantly inventing and improving upon inventions. it's cuz we hate work. that makes sense.
