My favorite type of complaining customers are the ones just now finding out about water displacement
amalia13lightning144 points11m ago
seriously, the price is for the amount of coffee you get. if you want more, you pay more
nicolelynnejones57 points11m ago
They should just buy hot coffee and let it get cold at this point
smc6426 points11m ago
I agree with you 💯
Unrelated, but Happy Cake Day! 🍰
Dazzling_Pop_7073-7 points11m ago
Okay but why? Did u pay for the coffee , is it coming from your paycheck? I'm a barista but I will not understand being upset about a little extra coffee or a little extra refresher. The drinks are fucking expensive and I don't make any more when people order their drinks with ice.
Apprehensive_Duck1873 points11m ago
Ok Karen simmer down
CommanderWar647 points11m ago
It’s really funny too because, there is no consistency in cup sizes scaling equally for hot and cold beverages. A venti iced drink is 26, a venti hot drink is 20. A grande iced and hot drink are both 16 and that’s the issue.
cookiemonstah872 points11m ago
Not to mention the whole hot grande and venti getting the same number of shots. Venti is just a weaker grande, really
devilsreject4926377 points11m ago
We don't use ice to give them less coffee, it's to make it colder and that's just how the recipe measurements are set up. It'll taste different without ice. More milky 🤢
Deadrax502 [OP]294 points11m ago
People just don’t get it. Had someone last week get a brown sugar shaken with light ice and light oat milk. Then she complained because it wasn’t to the top. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO PUT IN THE CUP!???
Furiosa_xo90 points11m ago
I had the same issue yesterday and earlier today, too! That was my reaction as well...Then What do I fill up the cup with?
We had a particularly entitled person just earlier this morning tell us to fill the rest of the cup up with PIKE and then NOT charge him for the Pike....when told we could not do that, he said he would "sit here all f\*\*king day until you figure it out." He said, "I come here to drink coffee, not drink milk."

Well if that is the case, then ORDER A BLACK COFFEE AND BE ON YOUR WAY!!!! He also said at some time during the transaction,
"And I'll be getting this drink on the house because I didn't like the one I had last time."
Not even asking for it on the house, TELLING US HE WOULD BE GETTING IT ON THE HOUSE.
Stalled the line for FOREVER, SM had to come off her break to talk to him, after all that, not even 15 minutes later he CALLED THE STORE and complained again.
What do we even do at that point? I would rather never serve him again, especially after profanity was used, and clearly he will never be happy with anything we make him.
Deadrax502 [OP]53 points11m ago
People are just disgusting the way they act over a drink. They’d rather ruin someone’s day than pay for their order.
Furiosa_xo51 points11m ago
Yep! I just wish he could hear himself talk. He kept repeating, "I spend thousands of dollars here."
So....?? Nobody is making you do that! You aren't on a special VIP list of customers just because you willingly choose to spend money here!
I think sometimes people wake up and start looking for trouble. And if they can't find some, they will make some.
godmasterchampion28 points11m ago
If he was using profanity and disrupting the experience of other guests, that’s grounds for documenting it (incident report) and taking steps to getting him banned from your store.
Low_Regular516012 points11m ago
Did you tell him to cancel his plans and sit down then? I would have told him to cancel his plans and sit down.
cookiemonstah873 points11m ago
The people that call the store to complain always confuse me. Like do you think someone other than who you just complained to will be around to listen? You're not going to get a different response...
SyerenGM2 points11m ago
Id of been petty and filled it with water.
devilsreject492684 points11m ago
Right? I had a lady want a shaken espresso with no ice. I gave her a cup of milk and classic and shots and it was only half full because of no ice, and not foamy at all. She wouldn't listen to me when I tried to explain ice is crucial to shaken espressos lol
Deadrax502 [OP]85 points11m ago
Not to mention when there’s no ice the shaker literally explodes😂

i made an iced crml macchiato with no ice and no caramel drizzle today 🤣🤣 idk at this point. i’ve even had kids/Teenagers ask for a frapp w no ice like sir you know that’s milk and syrup… w out the ice ur giving us nothing to blend together 😭
iodge14 points11m ago
put in a ton of syrup to fuck with them
remediosan7 points11m ago
there was a weekly update after the launch that said we are supposed to fill it to the top of light ice is requested. customers are stupid and instead of explaining the drink, we have to comply.
sheep_heavenly14 points11m ago
How do you fill a shaken espresso if they ask for light ice and light milk? That was the problem.
remediosan6 points11m ago
oh i didn’t see the light milk lol yeah that’s just silly
Professional-Cat3937 points11m ago
You’re still supposed to fill the cup. I know it’s dumb. And for no ice I still shake with ice and strain it.
Edit: I Missed the part about light oatmilk
gingergal-n-dog6 points11m ago
Correct
Necessary_Low9395 points11m ago
Her soul bro.
Meliodas6662 points11m ago
I used to just top with more milk/juice and send them on their way, didn’t get payed enough to argue…
Venus_Fox181 points11m ago
Tbh, when people ask for stuff like that, I really don't ever change the measurements. I did 1 time and I had to remake that drink 3 times because this lady didn't understand why 1. I didn't fill up the cup the first time 2. Didn't understand why it was so strong the second time (when I just did the usual amount of ice with light milk) and was finally satisfied that she had backed up the line enough to leave the 3rd time when I made the drink as the recipe dictates
ThankfulWonderful0 points11m ago
More coffeeeeeee hack for lifeeeee right here! /s
I usually will offer to fill the cup with iced coffeeee if they wanna pay for just one more shot.
vegan-trash21 points11m ago
I work at Starbucks and I don’t care if people want light ice or whatever but whenever they get no ice it irks me because the drink is ruined, in terms of beverage quality. It doesn’t taste good at all, and the proportions are wrong
These-Sky89319 points11m ago
Or when they get no ice and ask for a venti cup of ice with it🤦♀️
kaefeen5 points11m ago
if he was cussing your manager should just have him banned lmao
cookiemonstah872 points11m ago
Plus they're getting less milk, not less coffee
jupiter_bug1 points11m ago
To add to that, customers can use their words and ask for light ice. Some customers have actually asked me to put in a specific nymber of ice. It isn't that hard to say "may I please have a grande ice coffee with 3 icecubes?"
streetratroadie172 points11m ago
lmao the op of that post not understanding how anything works

Puzzleheaded_You260115 points11m ago
There’s no point. You know the saying “you can’t argue with stupid”.
megs128873 points11m ago
Yes Becky, when you order three trenta no ice, no water, SAR, I get annoyed. Not because of pay but because I just made backups two minutes ago and your friend Jessica is going to come in and order the same thing and I’ll have to make more and more backups and put off other cleaning tasks
[deleted]1 points11m ago
[deleted]
kennsnaps73 points11m ago
I wouldn't care about no ice drinks if not for 1. Constantly having to make backups cause we keep running out of refreshers, and 2. Those that order a coconut drink and complain that it separated.
meegy12359 points11m ago
Obviously personal preference but I just don’t understand the no ice people because it’s supposed to be a ready to drink service but you are now making it not ready to drink. Like what’s the point of now you have to wait or pour it into another cup? Like just what’s the point just make it yourself at that point
daisiesanddaffodils6 points11m ago
I've never done this but a woman used to come into my store once a week and get a venti or trenta (cant remember) cold brew with no ice. And then she'd take it home and keep it in her fridge and have coffee all week. I still think it's a great idea tbh I just get espresso drinks so it really wouldn't work for me.
icelessTrash1 points11m ago
One customer does this to not have to come in every morn and sometimes stocks up when she goes on camping trips. Just some sfv and cb, buys her own cream. But also gets hot and fancy drinks for herself and family a couple times a week. She just likes our cb first thing in the morn before she takes care of her horses. Grocery stores sell large cold brew bottles, but she prefers ours.
meegy1231 points11m ago
Yeah I just think at that point you are paying for a service you don’t need? It’s be cheaper to buy cold brew at a store and even cheaper and quite easy to make it yourself.
ValueAffectionate2876 points11m ago

what do you mean something costs more when you get more of it 😡
icelessTrash43 points11m ago
Just dumb-- "more means better" even when it's warm, less flavorful, and too milky. Same type of customer that orders no foam and brags about being smart. They think foam is cheating them too, no care for texture, taste, or drink quality.
(I always put a good amount of ice in my take out sodas. I want my cold drinks cold, and to stay that way as long as I'm sipping. And they don't even involve hot espresso shots!)
pumpqumpatch28 points11m ago
I’ve been trying to figure out what specifically about the No Ice People bothers me because it’s not as if it changes my day not putting ice in a drink, or that I care much about profits baristas will never see. But I think it’s just the reminder of what people really want. I take a lot of pride in being able to quickly put out good quality drinks to standard. I love making things for people that they’ll absolutely love, ready to drink, and it cheapens it for me to be reminded that a lot of customers just want as much sugar and caffeine as possible for the cheapest price possible. I know that starbucks is expensive but it seems so strange to me that rather than make it an ocasional special treat, they’d rather come every day and get their trenta sugar and two cups of ice.
It’s not really my place to be annoyed but sometimes that pride in putting out drinks I’m proud of is the only thing that keeps me invested when I’m on bar. It’s the only thing that keeps me from feeling like everyone’s caffeine monkey.
ValueAffectionate2872 points11m ago
Even if it weren’t for the fact that the ice makes (specifically) SAR watery and gross, I’ve got hella sensitive teeth and it’s really difficult to explain to other stores that even the light ice option is too much. (I’ll usually get a larger size so it lasts longer of the day). Usually my coworkers just know I do no ice at this point. I’d almost prefer to make a drink not completely to standard made with no ice but starbucks really should account for the customers who don’t want ice also.
dnims2430 points11m ago
Lately at my store people have been ordering trenta drinks with no ice and then two tall cups of ice and it’s super frustrating for some reason
bigghostb00ty16 points11m ago
Like why can’t you just enjoy the drink as it’s intended? Why do you have to try to get so much for your money that the product is no longer a handcrafted quality product? It makes me mad. It’s so stupid.
dnims248 points11m ago
I will admit that I don’t get ice in my own personal drink but it’s because I have sensitive teeth and the ice is too cold for me :(
bigghostb00ty25 points11m ago
I feel you, I have sensitive teeth, too, like I could never be the type of person who BITES into a scoop of ice cream… however this goes beyond that. It’s the one trenta no-ice drink and the subsequent asking for cups of ice at handoff for me. It’s the extra labor. The waste of cups when it seems like lately we always have some kind of cup shortage. And I will admit, the cheapness aspect is irritating. It’s the same as the people who used to order just shots in larger cups when we had milks out at the condo bar to make their own lattes. And they never tip.
…I think I need to take some time off.
dnims248 points11m ago
You def need a vacay
Responsible_Snow71099 points11m ago
On the second to last "tuesdays in july" deal where u get half off of one iced drink per starbucks account...that second to last tuesday in july was hell lol people constantly kept mobile ordering drinks with no ice and then when they come to pick it up, they always asked for a cup of ice on the side. It was insanity. We have shortages on cups. We cant just freakin give u a cup for free constantly with ice in it just cuz u dont wana pay for the drink u want which in turn just means u want a couple extra sips of milk. Thats what theyre getting when they ask for no ice in their iced drinks...just a few more extra gulps of milk. So they get a cup of ice on the side to (knowingly) give themselves the illusion of them having "more drink"
80sGraffiti2 points11m ago
This infuriates me more than anything else. Frap sprees might chisel at my tolerance, but the No Ice refreshers are the reason my store keeps running low on cups which leads to customers getting upset at the store when it's the OTHER customers' fault. And they have no shame it's the worst.
Responsible_Snow71092 points11m ago
Yepp thats why my shift said recently that if anybody asks for cups of ice, we can only do it in tall and grande cups for now because were running short on venti and trenta cups cuz people keep getting no ice in the drinks that theyre paying for and then they ask for a venti or trenta cup of ice when were running short and should be saving them for customers who are paying for a drink to go in that cup. If they wana do their no ice drinks, bring a reusable cup from home and i can put ice in it but to give a a free large cup of ice when were running low on them for paying customers, no.
aee782 points11m ago
We make them go order at the register. Had a lady ask why she had to do that when it would only take a minute. Didn't like it when I told her I was not giving out free product before people that paid got theirs.
dnims241 points11m ago
Wow that’s a great idea! My manager probably wouldn’t stand for it tho. She’s very much get them out as quick as possible
espressojunkie21 points11m ago
Given how expensive most stuff is my guess is Howard has already built the no ice people into the prices without making it public to avoid this type of social hate. 4D chess
BatWeary21 points11m ago
I don’t. We get yelled at enough as it is….I would rather not give them another reason
egodeath919 points11m ago
My fav is when there’s shortages on strawberry açaí and some fucker wants a 30oz with no water and no ice and no strawberry inclusions. Like fuck the fuck off
canadiadryy10 points11m ago
Exactly! My store was out all weekend because of stuff like this— they don’t realize it has a domino effect and then they want to throw a tantrum when we tell them we’re out of something.
aee782 points11m ago
I use to be the team lead at a Target starbucks, we got a weekly order and that was it. So when we ran out of something, we were almost always out for multiple days. Had lady threw a hissy fit that "every time she comes to this location we're out of strawberry acai. I don't understand why you can't order enough." Yes, ma'am. On Monday when you ordered a trenta no water no ice strawberry acai and I told you I could only give you a grande cause that was the last of it until the order came in on Friday and and it's Wednesday. We are going to be out until at least Friday afternoon if they even send cause they didn't last week.
I'd already told this woman's dumb ass we'd be out for the week twice. You think I'm going to be nice the 3rd time??
pickled_goblin19 points11m ago
I manage a proudly serving store, and I already have that rule lol. I tell my employees to just press the “extra flavor” button if a customer asks for no ice. in a venti CM that’s like an extra 10oz of milk, that shit costs so much to us even when we order through sysco ☠️☠️☠️
Jew_34 points11m ago
I spent 3 years managing a WPS. It was both the best and 2nd worst experience in my 20 years in food service.
ajjayy2218 points11m ago
Hmm, it’s almost like an iced beverage includes ice….
Tasty_Writing_54512 points11m ago
Man im so tired of explaining things to customers like you thought the iced version was like 6 ounces more then the hot version just for funsies!?? Come on now.
MasterMischievous11 points11m ago
I’m in full support of charging custies extra for no ice, but fr y’all out here talking about how much money we’re losing by doing that. Lmfao a literal drop in the bucket, one oatmilk-drink pays for the entire carton. I am ROLLING thinking it isn’t a combination of corporate greed and employee spite that made that happen
P.s. I cannot emphasize this enough: employee spite all the way, fuck dem bitches.
Edit: spelling
egodeath910 points11m ago
Simple explanation. I work for Starbucks but this applies to dunking too.
A large hot coffee is 20oz at Starbucks A large iced is 26oz at Starbucks.
The 6oz is accommodating for the ice. If you want no ice and you are demanding more coffee… you should pay for it. You’re just being a greedy fuck and you know it 🤷♀️
bunnylo10 points11m ago
I am a barista who happens to order every drink without ice no matter where I go. it’s just my personal preference, i have very sensitive teeth and even leave my cans of soda out for a bit to chill, and I drink slow sometimes so I don’t like ice making my drink sweat and watering down the actual beverage.
heartashley3 points11m ago
This is what it's like for me too 😔 sensitive teeth. So I always get light ice and let it melt a bit.
MiaLba1 points11m ago
Similar for me, I get light ice because I have such sensitive teeth. Same reason I get child temperature for hot drinks. Make the drink exactly like it’s supposed to be made, I’m not asking for more product. I just don’t want it super cold.
megs128810 points11m ago
They won’t change it because there’s already guidance..we’re just not following it. This is what the BRM says about it.

fuwaldah10 points11m ago
I have to ask... why do you care? It's not like Howard is going to pass on the savings to us.
Deadrax502 [OP]24 points11m ago
It’s just so annoying especially as a store who has trenta cups. Everyone gets no ice stawberry açaí refreshers and no ice shaken espressos. This would make it so we can just make drinks faster hopefully stopping some customers from ordering no ice/light ice.
fuwaldah11 points11m ago
Our job is to make drinks. I can't say I care what people order.
Deadrax502 [OP]9 points11m ago
I think it’s just because I’m newer I still don’t have the finesse of veterans.
glooomyclone4077-12 points11m ago
how does not adding ice take more time? lmao
Deadrax502 [OP]25 points11m ago
Yeah it does the measurements are completely different.
meegy12312 points11m ago
Yeah cause there isn’t a measurement for any of the shaken drinks it’s like….. I have to estimate where to fill it up to which could mess with the ratio of water to base and make it in general less palatable if that does happen.
[deleted]1 points11m ago

swollemolle9 points11m ago
I’ve started just making the drinks regular without the ice. Unless it specifies Ex Y or Z or whatever. People aren’t happy about it but hey the company made us go thru theft training so I don’t want to get caught giving people free shit and then I get in trouble for it. These $7+ aren’t worth me losing my job.

" ( ͡❛ 益 ͡❛) Too much Ice in my drink"
Definitely first world problems..
Deadrax502 [OP]6 points11m ago
The anger is real with these people too it’s kinda sad to a point😂
stropha_8 points11m ago
i worked at dunkin for 4 years before hiring on with sbux and it's not because we were giving them less coffee; it's because the f*cking ice machines were always broken and we had to go to gas stations or grocery stores to physically buy ice.
[deleted]1 points11m ago
Lol My store had to routinely do this because the ice machine couldn’t keep up with demand.
catbeetle7 points11m ago
Im all for people saving money and getting more out of their drink, but i find it annoying making these no ice drinks only because it’s usually like 4 no ice drinks and four cups of ice and we don’t have cups or lids for people who actually need it for their drinks that have ice.
lilkiosk7 points11m ago
I only ever do no ice for my husband in his teas because that man will be drinking his tea until the next day. And I have had many baristas I have worked with do that kind of thing. People who would close with me would make their coffee for the morning with no ice (but with the correct pre ice ratios) and then keep overnight and add ice. Otherwise, what are you doing.
Von_Leipzig6 points11m ago
Welllll, I’m here to grant you your wish. I work in a test store, we’re charging a dollar for every cup of water or ice.
It’s almost practically put an end to the no ice modification for most drinks. But be prepared for many angry customers, especially the first month and a half.
IDk when they’ll implement in to other stores but it seems to be working as intended
pastaronironironi8 points11m ago
I work at a store that’s in a not so great neighborhood, and a good chunk of people that come in are down on their luck or homeless. I will never ever stop giving them free water, charging for water seems ridiculous to me.
Von_Leipzig4 points11m ago
Totally understandable. I was keeping my explanation brief but here’s the a fuller explanation, technically we’re “not charging for water”, we’re charging for the cup, if they bring their own cup we can fill it up for free. Corporate installed a water fountain in the lobby that dispenses really cold water (which I assume would end up being installed in other stores too) and we put a sleeve of short 8oz cups so that anyone can still get water for free without a personal cup.
In my experience, this has cut the “ice on the side” BS to almost 0, and people can still get free water. In the drive thru, most people dont give a shit and they’ll just pay for the water or ice. Inside the lobby most customer who don’t want to pay for the water also don’t give a shit about the 8oz cups and just leave. I work in an area surrounded by a homeless camp and a school, and they tend to be the ones who use the fountain and the 8oz cups.
Overall there are almost no issues at all, and the policy works really well. NGL the first few weeks of the new policy were extremely tough but after a month everything runs pretty smoothly.
One draw back is that we now have to mark out ice waters as partner bevs (so they’re a lot more strict about not taking an ice water for our break without marking it out), but on the bright side, if you bring your own cup, you also don’t have to wait in line for an ice water (my store was kinda strict about that before the policy, so its a win for us)
[deleted]2 points11m ago
Fucking hero ❤️
kikisoats1 points11m ago
ive seen a lot of bitter partners disagree with free water, its nice to finally find my ppl😭
danijyb2 points11m ago
Pretty sure it's illegal to charge for water in the US. Are they claiming the charge is for the cup or something?
Anon317802 points11m ago
Nope! This is a commonly-held myth. There is no federal law that obligates foodservice establishments to serve free water, though your municipality may differ. The “free water” thing is a courtesy, but nothing more.
danijyb2 points11m ago
Wow, I never knew that. TIL lol
[deleted]1 points11m ago
Charging for water is so shitty to be honest. A dollar is even more ridiculous. You the cup cost was like a penny and the labor cost barely more than that.
emmalllemma6 points11m ago
(Not at Starbucks atm but former barista) I’m at a tea shop now, and for “no ice” the drink is still measured exactly the same regardless. Since the ice theoretically melts eventually and our drinks are concentrated, if you want no ice, you get water aka the exact same drink just in a different state, usually by shaking ice into it, straining it out, and using water to melt the ice slowly as you strain. Then it doesn’t mess with the recipe and doesn’t taste more milky or anything like that.
neo_is_the_one5 points11m ago
Over 60k people genuinely shocked that ice displaces liquid... fucking a
Gameb0i65 points11m ago
I mean we already charge to blend non blended drinks.
growinggrit4 points11m ago
It makes sense. Prices are based on measurements. You change the measurements, you change the price. I think they’re in the right to charge more. You don’t like it, make your coffee at home.
Assiqtaq4 points11m ago
I mean, if it bothers you that much get it hot. No ice in hot drinks.
Apprehensive-Pie-8383 points11m ago
I’m sorry but this is like $1 billion company why do we care so much whether people get ice or not? It’s not like it’s coming out of our paycheck.

daisiesanddaffodils2 points11m ago
This wasn't something I ever cared about when I was working at sbux and it's so petty to a big business like this it's not worth it to upset your customers. 99% of customers understand that their drink won't taste good if you subtract the ice and add an equivalent amount of extra milk and would never want it that way regardless. Posting this sign just riles everyone up and makes your company look miserly and pathetic.
Traditional-Emu-14032 points11m ago
When they order light ice extra milk at mine, I just make the drink a little out of order. 3/4 milk, coffee, then the light scoop. Lots of room left.
nickintheback082 points11m ago

gummytoli2 points11m ago

It really just more milk and diluted coffee.

Okay but like what are we supposed to do? Not put Ice in drinks because there would be less drink? I can say for SBux at least that we have slightly larger iced cups than hot, specifically for this reason
DragonSlayr41411 points11m ago
We already do this in our we proudly serve

Bro who cares, it literally does not effect your money at all. And charging for WATER?!?! That is literally a basic human right! I know that’s not what OP is talking about but I’m seeing it in the comments. Keep sucking the boot 😂😂😂

As a partner for 3 years, charging for no ice will accomplish nothing except people complaining or not coming to get coffee. If the drink doesn’t fill the cup, that’s their problem. Up charging will do nothing positive for anyone. You’re all in here now pushing for it, but when you’re getting yelled at every day over it, how long until you’re back here wishing they would cancel the up charge? Refreshers? Fine. I hate the customers that essentially order a whole bottle of the mix. Charge them, for sure. If someone wants a cold brew, or a FAIRLY made refresher with no ice, what’s the point in forcing an argument?

My store manager told me if a customer doesn’t want ice i should just add water and not more of the drink

And I’m over here living my ‘fill the cup with ice then Add the liquid’ life and it’s glorious.

If you don’t work at Starbucks you don’t understand. That’s why this is a barista sub. Having no ice completely messes with the measurements. No ice means you have to add more water, base and or milk. Making the levels of the drink different every-time. Everything at Starbucks has a level to it to make sure it’s consistent it’s almost impossible to be consistent with no ice/light ice. Having an extra dollar added hopefully makes people shy away from getting the light ice. That’s the way I look at it. Not making more money for the company. Plus not to mention having to make 40 Trenta Strawberry Açaí lemonades with no ice means I have to make more strawberry and lemonade, making my job and others more annoying then it has to be. So in short More Drink=more money.
