Coffee Master tasting with my manager. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NickiTheNotSoThicki
Hey friends I’m on my way to completing my coffee master training and have 2 more classes left then a tasting with my SM and ASM to see if I’m able to receive my black apron!!
Any coffee masters out there know what information I should be prepared to answer questions about if they ask (ex- the 4 parts of brewing good coffee is freshness, grind, water and proportion) and info about what growing regions produce what kind of flavors??

I’m wanting to make sure I know all the information I need to know to answer their questions as well as be the best resource I can be when partners or customers come to me as a coffee master with questions.

So any suggestions of things that are helpful know off the top of my head would be great!

I don’t have answers for you. More questions. Did you do your training on the clock? My SM and DM seem to know nothing about it, though I’m fairly sure it would just get scheduled as training hours. Was that what it was for you? I’m looking for a source or something to share with them.

Your SM will be quizzing you? Is that required ? My guess is basically any of that kind of stuff that you memorized or took the quizzes on at the end of the sections, lists of steps and such.

The process I did was I did the online coffee academy courses 100 and 200. I then came in early to talk to my manager about where to go and if I was in the right direction. They said yup and said the level 300 classes (there is 3) I can get paid to do those but 100-200 are on your own time (they both took like 30 mins each).
They gave me a coffee passport and I think technically you’re supposed to have tried all of our core coffees and made an entry to be able to do the level 300 classes- but my manager is so relaxed they wernt really concerned with me completing the book and mainly just wanted me to do coffee tastings just to develop a taste.
Lastly you have to be a partner for a year to be eligible for the program- but like I said my manager is really relaxed and by the time I have my final tasting will be a few days after my year anniversary so that’s not an issue at all.

The training classes are honestly really fun and it seems like try hard HR stuff but I have learned so much and it made me pick up a hobby of coffee.

For the quizzing I am not entirely sure what my tasting with them will entail- I know a coffee tasting for sure but as for questions I’m assuming they’re going to be about identifying different roasts and some of the programs Starbucks has for the farmers

But as I go on I can totally tell you what my tasting was like and help you with whatever questions you have! It’ll be good practice for me because I will be expected to help others out in joining the program. Just msg me!!

Thank you for the info! I have done 100 and 200 on my own, but I didn’t want to do 300 the wrong way since the course description makes it seem so serious and not get certified, you know? But my manager is pretty relaxed, as well, so I might just talk with her about it again. I am a 3 year partner and completed my passport, but still have a lot to learn about coffee, I know, so I’m looking forward to the classes! I will message you if I have any more specific questions!
