TRENTA RANT: Dress code is a lame excuse to be extra nit-picky to get you fired (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Aware-Vehicle1926
We get it. Corporate SBUX wants partners to uphold a professional appearance while at work… most partners adapt their wardrobe to the neutral dress code—I wear all black anyway—but now it’s specifically “dressier” & semi formal like button up shirts or sbux t’s only… AND ONLY CERTAIN ANAL PARTNERS WHO ARE TENURED ARE AGGRESSIVELY NIT-PICKING DRESS CODES… because I’ll have two coworkers tell me I’m not in dress code and at the same time look around at two other coworkers not in dress code… certain shifts love to play favoritism & will point fingers at the least favorited barista. I think it’s all phony. I’m thinking I’ll make an ethics complaint because it’s clear to me why I’m being nitpicked the most—I don’t feel welcomed in my store because I’m constantly nitpicked…
Meanwhile there’s other coworkers doing whatever they like & I’m the bad guy for pointing it out.

I’ve bought 5 sbux shirts now to circulate for my shifts so that I’m not fired for this lame excuse of dress code violation…

***Also I love how we were able to wear whatever we wanted during pride month color wise***

Anyway… pay me an extra .4 to make it $16/hr & I might keep my mouth shut…

Here's my unpopular opinion: Our dress code is incredibly easy to follow. If you refuse to, you probably should be separated.

But I do agree that policies must be enforced consistently. You should complain to ethics if you feel you are being discriminated against. But they will not give you permission to disregard dress code.

Not an unpopular opinion. Our dress code is very open and easy to follow. I haven’t seen anyone get sent home over the dress code unless they were wearing something obviously not acceptable for ANY food service job, like a bright orange Nike tee with the sleeves cut off (true story), sweatpants, or open-toed shoes.

If your store is making up their own rules, however, check the corporate guidelines to be sure you’re right then talk to your DM.

I definitely understand why there is a dress code. My point is that I’m being nitpicked while others are allowed to do whatever… maybe I should be separated because is this high school?

To be brutally honest with you, you need to be in the back room with ur accusers and a witness you trust and rip into them politely. They think ur a doormat and you need to set the expectation. One simple conversation of “I do not appreciate this, we’re done. We can end this NOW or go to the SM/corporate.”
It sounds like you just have some worthless shifts that are wanting to play gossip girl. I pray ur SM isn’t a fool and can see that there’s some HS behavior going on
Aware-Vehicle1926 [OP] 1 points 11m ago
She’s the biggest gossip girl in the store so nope I just blow off steam internally… but I’m working on being more assertive & taking accountability for myself. I can’t control what other folks say or do.
fuwaldah 1 points 11m ago
Do you work out of dress code?
yungfroggie 6 points 11m ago
after reading the dress code another person commented and seeing OPs comments, i think they’re just wearing a plain black t-shirt which technically isnt allowed per that dress code because of the sleeves being short. that being ridiculous aside (because i’ve never had a problem with plain t shirts), it’s also bc others are not being held to the same standard i guess
Aware-Vehicle1926 [OP] 1 points 11m ago
Apparently I do just to have another reason to fire me… I bought more of the sbux shirts though but my rant is about accountability of the whole team for the most part//my manager loves telling me textbook policy about how there’s no favoritism.. anyway I’ll do better on my part.
Such_Yellow_3332 2 points 11m ago
To be honest though honey not ONE partner is ever perfect 100 everyday. Let it be connections, dress code etc. unless you’re showing up to work naked they need to knock it off. Literally every single partner ever breaks the rules. This intense boner some of us get for this job is insane ITS JUST COFFEE 😂 really don’t get why certain parts get like this
In my gods honest opinion if ur notcig someone is out of dress code for petty things (tshirt instead of button up) ur honestly not helping ur team. Ur just being a micromanager and people
Instantly loose respect for that. Jus sayin. Sorry for the rant, hopefully things get better sweetie. If not…we’ll figure somethin out 😂

How do you know everybody isn't getting coached on what you are getting coached on?
HamburgIar_ 1 points 11m ago
I am sure we all know that answer

Unless I missed a dress uniform update this week??? Pride month didn’t ignore dress code but sounds like your store did, must’ve been fun, can’t relate. But button up and Starbucks t-shirts? That’s not the $1
Last I checked that’s still the dress code while I’m waiting to see what the “updated” version is. So from what you’re saying as long as the shirt is not to showy maybe? Color wise you sound perfectly in dress and they’re being stupid
Ambition_Healthy 4 points 11m ago
That’s the less detailed version of the dress code for basic use. There’s a $1 that shows specific examples of what you can/can’t wear. Plain T-Shirts are a “no go” apparently, but it says you can wear SBux promotional ones.
awesomechief989 3 points 11m ago
For some reason I thought that was the old dress code? 😂 my normal work attire is a t shirt. When I got hired in 2019 I was specifically told they loosened up the dress code in the past year including t shirts
Ambition_Healthy 1 points 11m ago
it could possibly be. that’s just the one my SM would send to us if we had deeper questions on it lol
dreadheada 1 points 11m ago
in an attempt to be maliciously compliant becuase my managers are also nit picky assholes I will be saving this :))

T-shirts can be worn in the approved color palette

One facial piercing (any style) that's no larger than a dime

More color options for denim and shoes (any color in the approved color palette except white)

One-page guide replaces 30-page LookBook

An extended assortment on CoffeeGear and new discounts on Partner Perks to offer more affordable options

-directly from the partner hub

They’re being stupid… I show up in all black but yeah I understand the t-shirt can’t have words on it… meanwhile the shift is in a rainbow stripe shirt. Most of my coworkers do not wear nonslip shoes & someone else is wearing a casual white t-shirt…
Hence why I’m saying I’m being nitpicked
