2 weeks is a courtesy. Drop him if u can afford to
PTOKEN195 points11m ago
This. If they can fire you without a 2WN, you can quit without one.
Fine-Entrepreneur-614 points11m ago
i quit my last position at the very last hour of my shift just so i wouldn’t have to deal w my manager as much. i suggest doing the same if anyone else doesn’t feel like dealing w their crap of a boss for another two weeks
longtermcontract1 points11m ago
Do what you feel is right, but just keep in mind when applying to new jobs that they often call former employees and ask questions like "would you hire them again?"
My friend's business has a policy that if you don't give 2 weeks you leave in bad standing and they won't rehire you, and they'll tell anywhere else you apply that you're in bad standing.
Just food for thought.
aeb0143 points11m ago
Yep, and you don’t owe him a courtesy after that.
philosopher_cat_lady34 points11m ago
The last Starbucks I quit, my manager was so awful I could not bring myself to work with him for two more weeks. I'm sure I'd feel the same way if my manager accidentally texted me some shit like this. What had happened was he had written some shit on a note I had written to the team. We were all talking about how the closers had way too many responsibilities and tasks and not enough time to do them, particularly since only one person was closing each day. I wrote about how at a company-operated store I had worked at, the daily cleaning tasks were spread out over the whole day. Then my manager wrote: "Funny thing is you don't work there anymore."
frappeyourmom1 points11m ago
This is the way.
_absent_minded300 points11m ago
How do these types of people become managers 😭
elementaltruth162 points11m ago
whoever kisses the most ass moves up the quickest. no talent, compassion or empathy needed…
PTOKEN63 points11m ago
I can attest to this. My very first manager was a horrible human. Great at getting drive thru times down but thats about it. He hired women based solely on whether or not he would like to sleep with them, regardless of their age. A few were 16. Even said he “>!Would like to suck a fart out of an employee’s ass!<“(NSFW). No joke. He then got mad when someone ratted him out to said employee. He berated anyone who failed at the job in any manner, regardless of experience. Told me in my first week that “>!Im fucking retarded and need to kill myself!<“ (NSFW) before removing me from bar and throwing me on warming. But when you did well he would praise you relentlessly. He ended up giving a shift position to his best friend at the store who was exactly the same, if not worse. I cant tell you how many new hires i saw in my year of working there. The core few who knew the job well didnt mind what the SM said, including me, so we all stuck around for a bit longer. He eventually got fired and from what i understand, the new SM is completely incompetent, cleaning house and driving the store from best in the district to worst within a few months.
Jnisenberg0119 points11m ago
i am so sorry this is something you had to experience. the absolute disgust i feel towards him after reading that…
PTOKEN10 points11m ago
It honestly never really bothered me. My coworkers before me warned me of his personality so i was prepared. I just felt bad for the people who didnt know. He was great at running the store but horrid with people. Thats what i think is the biggest problem with SBux at the moment. They hire and promote people who care more about profit than people. Managers cant be one-or-the-other.
Necessary_Low9393 points11m ago
Wow what a prick.
PTOKEN7 points11m ago
Yeah he was not a good person. Got fired shortly after i left due to a new coworker reporting him on his behavior. Kinda surprised nothing happened sooner tbh
Necessary_Low9392 points11m ago
Wow what a prick.
DreyaNova24 points11m ago
Because Starbucks is a cult and the people who move up the ranks in cults are the most brainwashed and sadistic members?
Internal-Ad-88203 points11m ago
Yeah that sounds about right. I got written up for closing the cafe without permission last year by the DM and they told me I wasn't "living Starbucks mission and values of creating a 3rd place". Like, you literally can't create a 3rd place for anybody with 3 total partners working and lines out the wazoo. So happy I'm not there anymore.
_absent_minded3 points11m ago
Hahaha 🥲 sounds right
PalominoCreste1 points11m ago
This is why I left corporate for licensed. Corporate store managers are crazy people with whom there is no bargaining if it is not the almighty word of howie
paintthatface223 points11m ago
Email this to your DM before you leave.
Environmental-Mail40118 points11m ago
That's probably who the SM was texting! 😁 But sent it to the wrong person. 😯😯😯
Expecto_nihilus128 points11m ago
This.
Email it to the Global HR Ops team.

snugglefrump128 points11m ago
Honestly? That text sounds like permission to just not come in. If they aren’t going to be arranging a schedule around a single partner then you can take yourself out of the equation for them entirely.
PTOKEN5 points11m ago
Honestly i disagree. I do think it’s ridiculous to ask a schedule be put around your needs but on that same token it doesnt look like this person was asking that. Just looks like the SM was an ass
snugglefrump5 points11m ago
I used to make schedules and while I didn’t make them around a single employee it was never so difficult and trying that I would talk smack behind their back. It’s laziness, or bad management if the place is understaffed, and the manager here definitely does not deserve a two weeks notice after that text.
PTOKEN2 points11m ago
Exactly. Its the entitlement. Managers would have no store and no income were it not for the employees who staff it for them. In return, the employees get essentially, a cut of the revenue, as well as support from the manager in any work-related issues. Managers work for employees just as much as employees work for managers.
The_Septic_Shock89 points11m ago
"Your unprofessionalism has now turned this into a 'fuck you I quit' gl finding covers"
Responsible_Snow710984 points11m ago
Wow holy shit. How nasty of a person do u gotta be to text somebody else after u get a text from an employee? Some people do not deserve a position of authority
[deleted]70 points11m ago
Oh that sucks but I totally get the complaint. People whine they get zero hours and their availability is every third Thursday of the month for the afternoon (obviously not real), then call out for their shift and cry about no hours.
The ONLY way you are getting full time at Starbucks if you aren’t a shift is if you have truly open availability. People need to understand this reality. You cannot limit your availability there and except 35-40 hours. Not gonna happen, is it fair? No is it reality, oh yeah.
Your boss was a dick.
meowdrian40 points11m ago
It’s especially difficult if you have like 25 out of 35 partners who say they’re only available from 5a-12p M-Fri. No one wants to work weekends or evenings, which like I don’t blame them, but if you and alllllll of your coworkers want the exact same hours not everyone will be getting them & more people will have to be hired that have different availability pulling even more hours away from you.
This is not an office job, this is not a “set schedule” job, it’s retail. To expect to get full time hours with limited availability is just silly.
sheep_heavenly9 points11m ago
Then don't hire/transfer people who only work 5a-12p M-F. That's a failure of the SM, not the workers.
>This is not an office job, this is not a “set schedule” job, it’s retail.
Retail being awful and ridiculous changing hours isn't a requirement to scheduling. You're allowed to give mostly set schedules. I've worked basically the same hours for the last 5 years. Part of that is not hiring an unnecessary person with strictly the same availability and need as the employees already there.
> To expect to get full time hours with limited availability is just silly.
To expect to get easy scheduling with satisfied employees while also making poor worker choices is just silly.
persona-22 points11m ago
DMs can force transfers. They can just inform a SM of a new partner even if they availability doesn’t work or isn’t needed.
sheep_heavenly0 points11m ago
So still a management problem and should be addressed by management.
meowdrian1 points11m ago
This specific issue I mentioned is usually a slow process. It’s usually something where you have a fairly tenured team of partners who have all slowly over time reduced their availability.
Yes, a lot of it does fall on management, but it can be difficult to balance. Because you’re either denying availability changes and making people upset or you’re allowing availability changes but then have to potentially reduce hours for those partners or hire new people.
Then the deal with the changing schedule usually comes down to people requesting time off. Ideally managers would just be able to copy schedules forward every week and never change anything, but then you have like 9 people that all decide they need the same weekend off and that’s like 25% of your team so you either have to deny time off and upset people or allow them all to have time off and then change up everyone else’s schedule to cover for that.
Yes, ideally managers would feel comfortable having tough conversations about denying availability changes or time off, but again, it’s a difficult thing to balance.
I’m not trying to make excuses for management. And I’m not saying that everyone’s situation with reduced hours has to do with availability. But, in my own personal experience, the partners that complain the most are the ones with limited availability who also frequently call out.
ElijahLordoftheWoods7 points11m ago
If I’m available for 90 hours a week and you only give me 8, that’s not on meeeeee.
Specialist-Bid4603 [OP]37 points11m ago
The only day I’m not available is sundays…. I literally get scheduled average like 12 hours a week
Exhausted_mama9321 points11m ago
That’s how I was too, open availability open to close Mon-sat and I averaged 20-25 hours. Good for you for taking care of your family whichever way you need to!
Freezykiwi7 points11m ago
Are you 100% open on the other days? Because that actually sounds like great availability.
sheep_heavenly2 points11m ago
I can't even imagine being available to work 3:30am to 10pm every single day but one. That's not a healthy way to live.
4filth3 points11m ago
🙋🏾♂️ hi it’s me 24/6 availability and I can confirm it’s not healthy (and my managers _still_ badger me to work outside of/open my availability)
pinkiero22 points11m ago
tbh i have 100% open availability but i still average 25 hrs a week even with picking up shifts despite asking for as close to full time hours as possible at the beginning of my employment, just putting it out there that it is possible
BaristaBabe138 points11m ago
I also had completely open availability, (I no longer work there). Even when we were short staffed for 5 months, I never got a full 40 hours a week, unless I picked up other peoples shifts and call ins. I think I got a total of 3 40 hour weeks the whole time I was there.
Intelligent_Wash90005 points11m ago
Yo as a shift I get max 32 hours 😭
BaristaBabe133 points11m ago
That’s pitiful. I’m sorry they are doing that.
Interesting-Crazy-992 points11m ago
No but same. I’ve been only getting 22 to 30 hours and I’m a shift. I can’t live on that
OneRoseDark10 points11m ago
I used to have a restaurant coworker who would call out, get her shifts covered, and (on the occasions she actually showed) generally spent more time chatting with coworkers than serving tables.
Wah, wah, I can't afford to pay my rent. Wah, wah, I don't have any hours. Wah, wah. I'm going to the bakery, who wants donuts?
I swear to all the gods i hated this coworker.
HappyBarista3 points11m ago
I just have a question about one little point you mentioned. You said The ONLY way you are getting full time at Starbucks if you aren’t a shift…
Please tell me this is actual policy somewhere I can print it. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I’ve worked in multiple stores and the one I’m in now, our SM only gives 35+ hours to her one “favorite” ssv. (She actually told one ssv that another ssv is her favorite.) The rest of us ssv’s are getting less hours than a lot of the baristas.
[deleted]7 points11m ago
No it’s not an actual policy, I don’t believe Starbucks guarantees any amount of hours for anyone but SSV’s and even that is obviously up for debate
HappyBarista0 points11m ago
For anyone but ssv’s… That sounds like there’s some kind of understanding that ssv’s get as many hours as the store can provide. That’s always how it has been at my previous stores. But that’s not the case at my current store.
[deleted]2 points11m ago
I know at my spouse’s store the shifts used to have to be full time just because there weren’t enough of them, now they have so many moat have a pretty selective schedule:
Enkeria922 points11m ago
Not a policy. I was a shift and I worked FT before my shit manager came in.
Brief_Coat65263 points11m ago
And then you have those who want max hours just to have the wiggle room to give them up
Spiritual_Resource363 points11m ago
100% agree, my store in particular is understaffed on weekends (we typically need to borrow partners) but there’ll be ppl at my store who complains about hours but can only work night time on weekdays when everyone wants to cover those shifts already. Like what?

Call partner resources and show them the text thread. If your SM is talking about you to other partners in this manner Im sure there are others he's doing it to.
CharmyFrog31 points11m ago

StormTheParade12 points11m ago
Probably an active group chat or two.

Don’t forget to put in ur sick and vaca hours bestie
Gameb0i626 points11m ago
Vacation is automatically cashed out when you separate. Sick hours are not. So make use of those while you can.
Kaluskydrak20 points11m ago
You have text proof, and he said it TO you, I would call PCC, they can get in trouble
user4198414 points11m ago
i’d tell your district manager about this, completely unprofessional
chipqueen253213 points11m ago
yeah that sounds like my old SM. she was horrible and while she never texted us anything like this, she said shit like this behind everyone’s backs 24/7. soooo glad to be gone from there lmao
georgecarlinsneice13 points11m ago
Omg how rude!
MrDrProfessorBalls12 points11m ago
proud of how you handled this. you seem so wise
Lightheaded_gamer10 points11m ago
Report him.... You leaving does not justify his behavior. Whenever a manager is this messed up in writing , keep it and report it. Like that is proof to get these f-ed up managers off their positions and out. I had one SM that would say all of the stuff that can get her in trouble over the phone or in person ; never on text; that's why she's still a SM and even had a new store for herself.
budsandrainbowsss10 points11m ago
This wouldn’t happen to be in Virginia would it? Former partner here and I know a SM Dennis in two cities. Both crap SMs. Sorry you got a crap one too.
Edit: Also maybe send a link of this post to your DM? Depending on how chaotic you’re feeling. ☺️
RubySapphireSage10 points11m ago
I’m glad you stood your ground , it’s ridiculous how childish people can be .
anotheroneig9 points11m ago
This was definitely sent on purpose..
Send this to your district manager by accident
Apprehensive-You96528 points11m ago
Definitely go above your DM. I quit Starbucks for the first time because my SM and DM would laugh at me anytime I brought an issue. I regret not going above. How did he respond after you sent that last text 👀
iforgotmyprevlog8 points11m ago
“We do not write schedules to accommodate a single partner” sure, but it’s called flexibility. It’s what most come and stay at this company for. Geeze at least you gave the two weeks and didn’t just disappear, they could be grateful for that. Hopefully you’re next job works out better for you!
rs73118 points11m ago
Sounds like someone needs to call in sick every shift until the 11th!
IzzyIllustrations8 points11m ago
Heard we weren't going to be allowed to text outside of work anymore, I wonder if these situations are why.
BeardiesRule11211 points11m ago
No it’s bc of ppl unionizing. You can text whoever you want, this isn’t North Korea
Pete-_-Zahut4 points11m ago
Texting outside work has been frowned upon by jobs everywhere for quite some time. Especially between management and employees. Fights can happen, tone is misread, people have to talk to their bosses off the clock without getting paid, Etc. Before Starbucks kicked off its unionizing, our DM was consistently on us about deleting group chats and texting our sm/asm unless it was urgent or to call in sick
djdementia3 points11m ago
almost all jobs will say this. You can communicate about your schedule only, any communications outside of that could be considered working time and should be authorized in advance / and paid wages for completing.
IzzyIllustrations1 points11m ago
I know in the district meeting my manager had the other day, they discussed not even for scheduling purposes can they text employees when they're off the clock, and everything must be done and approved in the app. Which is ridiculous because half my store doesn't even have the SBUX app.
IzzyIllustrations1 points11m ago
You know I meant between employees and managers, not ANYONE. I overheard my manager speaking to a shift that managers and shifts will no longer be allowed to even text about shifts that need picking up, and everything will need to be done through the SBUX app. This is something they just discussed in a district meeting. Maybe it's just our district, but I know there have been a lot of texts between managers and employees going around and I have a feeling it's because of situations like this.
If starbucks is going to make a policy that managers and shifts can't text employees on their off days, then no, you can't text whoever you want.
sassyhippi37 points11m ago
You should call human resources and have this sm investigated.
jazzysoranio7 points11m ago
Omg, if I had that I would print it out and frame it! And then I would give out copies to all the baristas who still work in that manager’s store. Even IF you don’t have the availability to give them in order to get the hours you need, that kind of response form your manager is BEYOND unprofessional. And they tried to cover it up with a “sorry, had a bad day.” Yeah, maybe if having a bad day causes you to f-up that bad you shouldn’t be a manager!
mezzobarista7 points11m ago
i wonder what partner resources would think…
Samiixmarie7 points11m ago
This is hard to even look at 🙈 Good job dodging a bullet OP!
Complex_Imagination96 points11m ago
SM has a rough day but still made the time to text someone about “calling” when you would quit? If you can financially bite the bullet leave immediately. You do not owe Starbucks the courtesy of a 2 weeks notice. Any reasonable person would apologize to high heaven and she doubled down on her pathetic excuse. Also forward this to partner relations. SM needs to be held accountable for poor behavior
Alternative_Exam37236 points11m ago
I wouldn’t even show up after that 💁🏼♀️
ProfessionalRock79406 points11m ago
After that, you don't owe him shit. Dip out now
mrcupcake186 points11m ago
Jesus Christ man, yeah those two weeks is a courtesy so I would not even go through with it and definitely send this to someone higher than you’re DM. Glad you found something better for you and you’re family!
AH_Money6 points11m ago
"I'll take your two weeks" is a funny way of saying thanks for the courtesy of a notice, please don't leave even sooner.
martinifather5 points11m ago
I’m sorry I can’t believe they started with “called it!” the fuck?
gcabb5 points11m ago

saddestgirl19955 points11m ago

Necessary_Low9395 points11m ago
I don’t understand the whole avail shit because people have lives outside of work. We can’t have open availability all the time.
sleepygirlofficial4 points11m ago
WOOOOOOW FUCK DENNIS
Dear-Document49814 points11m ago
My SM is also kind of a nightmare.
Goldenneye3 points11m ago
I hope you reached out to partner resources. If not... Let's make this shit go viral.
No-City-16823 points11m ago
To everyone saying to just quit… yeah, do what you gotta do, but unfortunately if you do that you’re probably going to end up fucking over your co-workers more than the SM.
RyusuiJL2 points11m ago
THANK YOU. Seems like so many people are quick to burn the SM just as much as it appears they burned OP, but absolutely NO ONE is giving any consideration to the other partners at the store.
I actually left a super toxic company/manager to go work at Starbucks, and when I gave my 2 weeks, it was specifically to support those around me. I actually had my hand in multiple departments, and wanted to give the people I worked with some time to handle the loss of a body on the floor. I even offered to stay on in one of the positions I worked, but in that position only. Specifically because I knew how hard it was to get someone in there.
Bottom line - yes, the OP needs to do what's best for themselves. But my god...the amount of people here who are just as quick to jump to vile behavior as the SM was without any thought as to what those actions could cause is just amazing.
No-City-16822 points11m ago
There was someone who suggested calling out repeatedly… like, yes… if you hate everyone you work with and want them to have a horrible time for the next 2 weeks, go for it.
NotyourangeLbabe3 points11m ago
What a menace
cailey0013 points11m ago
Oh my god please report him to PCC. They’d probably get you to the store that can give you enough hours (or just get you more hours in general) and get rid of that asshat
madisonla3 points11m ago
It’s the talking behind your back for me
4filth3 points11m ago

Two things: 1, Text messages are not formal communication. Your manager is supposed to get a letter of resignation from you. (They don't bother to though. I got separated after writing a text message and I wasn't allowed to reverse my resignation.) 2, My manager "wrote schedules to accommodate a single partner." She scheduled me separately from a partner who was verbally abusing me. Then I learned that she was doing that as a favor though, that it's not something a manager is required to do.

every SM in a nutshell!!!
RyusuiJL1 points11m ago
Not even close. My SM could not be any more positive, helpful, supportive, or a team player if there were 2 of her. She's easily the best manager I've ever had in about 25 years of work history.
elementaltruth1 points11m ago
needle in a haystack. we had an awesome manager when I transferred to her store, but she left as the DM is not supportive. since then we have had 7 deplorable SM’s in less than a year. I am glad you have a good one though. cherish it!!!
