SSV Interview (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Michael_armond
Hi partners! I have been a barista with Starbucks for about 7ish months, but I have worked as a barista, bartender, server, and trainer with several other smaller businesses over the past 7 years. I just got promoted to barista trainer a few weeks ago and today, my manager mentioned that there was a SSV position open. I applied and got an interview so I’m wondering if anyone has any tips. I feel like my work during my shift is high quality, but I am a bit nervous to be interviewing with a manager other than mine since they don’t get to see that on a daily basis. I would love any advice or points to help me stand out in a positive way with someone new.

My SM asked me to use names while telling my anecdotes, even if they're fake. I saw on another post here they like that you can remember names and make it feel more personal, maybe as an example that you are capable of handling that as a SSV?

My interview had the questions word-for-word and I just talked my ass off, being thorough as possible, restating the question at the end to show you remember what you're talking about.

Reader, I got the job.

Great advice! I’ll definitely remember that one. Using fake names will be a nice way to be able to tell the story without worrying about putting anyone on blast. Thank you!

Answer interview questions with the STAR method.

S- Situation, layout the scene of the story, and what happened

T-Task, what were your responsibilities in this moment

A- Action, what did you do in or outside of your responsibilities to "make the moment right"

R- Result, did you ever see that customer again? Were they satisfied in the moment? Did the team feel supported? Etc etc.

All of the interview questions are available on partnerhub but dont get too caught up in pre-planning your interview. Just think of some examples of things you did to go above and beyond, make the moment right, or examples of coaching opportunities. Personality, communication, and leadership are the main things they're looking for.

Thank you!! I had heard of the STAR model before but didn’t know what it actually stood for. This is super helpful.

If you’re a US partner you should be able to log into the Partner Hub and search up “shift supervisor interview”. It should pull up a pdf of what format to expect and a list of 9 interview questions. My interview followed that exact format and I was asked 3 of the questions word for word (1 per section). My advice would be to look at those questions and try to think of times you’ve coached fellow partners or had good customer connections to answer those questions

Best of luck!

Yeah, I was able to find it and it’s great to have a little preview so I’m not caught off guard and stumbling. Thank you!

I just had my SSV interview last week, and my advice is be confident and don’t sweat it! Use Starbucks phrases and jargon, memorize the LATTE model, and think of a way you improve the store.

Best of luck!

I really like the last point of thinking of how you can improve the store. It’s a nice way to highlight what I could add without the conversation revolving around me.
