Licensed Baristas: What dress code restrictions do you have?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by morbiusmorbius
I work in a grocery store Starbucks (not Target) and I was thinking about how restrictive our dress code is and was wondering if other licensed locations experience similar restrictions.
-No dyed hair -Can only wear black collared shirts -Can not have a customized name tag -Can only wear khakis and black pants (they just allowed us to wear black pants this week) -Can only wear official starbucks pins for certification, training, and coffee academy. Cannot wear the pronoun pins or pride pins. -Only baristas that have worked there for a year can wear the black coffee academy aprons -Can only wear the shoes sold on one specific website (hosted by our grocery store) -Cannot have more than 2 piercings on one ear -And then the super obvious ones for working food service such as no rings, watches, painted nails, long hair must be put up into a pony or bun, no shorts, and long beards must be in a hairnet
I don't know how these codes apply to stand-alone stores ornother licensed stores but it disappoints my fellow baristas that we can't have different pins because another licensed location in the same grocery store a few miles away can wear pins from amazon and dye their hair

I work at a reg store and our restrictions are nothing like that! We can definitely have dyed hair, customizable name tags, and dark wash/black jeans or brown, grey, black, khaki color pants without rips. Shirts can be anything really but must be in the color pattern (navy, gray, black, white, brown). All pants should have a button and zipper but it’s not that strict and I was offered a pronoun pin on my first day at work if I wanted one.
When it comes to jewelry and shoes it’s pretty standard. All black shoes mostly, and no jewelry below the elbow except for a simple ring. I don’t think ear piercings matter at my store but we are only allowed one facial piercing the size of a dime.

wait is there really a facial piercing thing in the dress code? i have 3 nose piercings and nobody has said anything about it

i've been clocked for my septum ring and my nose ring before by my DM, but never by a store manager or shift
itsyaboimikey_1 points11m ago
huh. my DM didn’t say anything the one time i met her but maybe she didn’t notice?

she might be nice, most people let it go and don't say anything like my SM

at my licensed store we have to wear khaki pants and a black button up with non slip shoes but tbh they aren’t very strict. lately i’ve been wearing pins on my apron and no one has said anything about it. some of my coworkers also have their nails done and they have not had any issues. I think it really depends on who your lead is and who your store manager is.

We get to wear jeans and any black or white shirt. They say collared but no one knows or cares. I honestly doubt if anyone higher than the manager of Starbucks knows the full dress code in that regard. Shoes are only closed toed shoes but no crocs. It's your fault if you damage your feet with silly footwear. Dyed hair is OK.
We can't do pins and normal health department guidelines (nails, nail polish, rings with stones in them, necklaces, etc), but we can do rings without any stones and medical alert bracelets. Piercings are a no go as well or you have to have bandaids on them. Black aprons were also discontinued since those were for coffee masters so no one wears one.
We are free to do most things as long as it isn't offensive and still follows guidelines. Target is actually quite lax with their dresscode and this applies to other team members well.

These all sound like our restrictions prior to them being revised years ago. But this was the life when I started back in 2004 except for being able to wear black pants and t-shirts that were provided by the siren for campaign launches. Black apron was awarded as soon as you passed your black apron 'exam/interview' with your SM/DM (also circa 2004-2007).

I used to work at an acme and we had to wear black collared shirts, hats, and hair nets. We originally weren't allowed to even wear black jeans, only black dress pants, but that wasn't enforced thankfully.
When I started at target I asked what the dress code was and our team lead looked at me like I was an idiot and said I don't care, just wear black?

I run a licensed store and tbh I do not enforce dress code much at all within reason. No sandals or anything crazy but other than that I let people wear what they want unless it’s crazy loud or offense or has ridiculous logos.

I used to work at a Macy’s Starbucks and we could wear anything as long as it aligned with the colors in the Starbucks dress code and no ripped jeans

at my licensed store it's jeans, khakis or dark navy pants. a red, white, blue, black or navy shirt. shoes are preferably sneakers but the girls get away with crocs and slip on vans. the SBUX hat. apron. no fake nails. not sure about dyed hair and piercings, but i have my nostril and septum pierced and it's fine. yea it's pretty lame. I just wanna wear a t shirt and yoga pants on my sunday shift!!

I used to work at a licensed store a few years ago (now I’m at corporate). Our dress code was we could wear black shirts and black pants and dark jeans were allowed on weekends (I know it doesn’t make sense). We couldn’t show tattoos, piercings, and our hair had to be a natural color. It could be different rules now but that was the rules 4 years ago.

I would never work there only because of the piercing one. I have 17 piercings rn and still getting more lol. My sm loves them and even picked out my newest one ahahahaha

Wow that’s so strict!! I work at a Starbucks in a grocery store and ours is the same as the corporate dress code
