It’s the best day ever, but will we still get paid? (self.starbucksbaristas)

We show up to open and there is a water main break, the street is flooded and we have to detour through the drive thru just to get into our parking lot. We get into the store and we have no water. We call our SM and he tells us to go walk down the the police officers and construction workers on site at the break and inquire about when we might have water (yes it was 4am, we made sure to stay together), We were told the water will be off most of the day. We go back to the store call SM and let them know their response is “I’m fucking pissed send out a text to everyone letting them know they are on call for their shift today and will need to come in once the water is on and we can open.” We send out the messages, write signs to tape to the doors and dt saying we’re closed and why, get the order put away and go home. Now it’s 10:30 still no water.
Is this one of those times we would get natural disaster pay or did I just make that up??
Update: The water was turned back on and we opened around 1:30pm, everyone scheduled before then was told they are getting catastrophe pay.

It’s not a natural disaster. You’re paid if you clocked in and till whenever you clock out. If your store is closed, the only other options you have to get paid is if your SM sends you to another store to work there.

Catastrophe pay exists and includes more than literal hurricanes or whatever so we can’t make assumptions either way. It all depends on how the DM & co decide to classify it.

Sorry that’s my bad. I just assumed since a similar thing (water main broke at a Starbucks near me and their parking lot + store was flooded) and their baristas were sent to work at my store and other nearby ones. They had told me they weren’t classified for catastrophe pay

So catastrophe pay is a thing but I do not know enough about how it is determined whether an event qualified. Partner guide does mention stuff about power outages in the section about catastrophe pay so water main break would seem similar enough to that category. Y’all can def get paid for the time you were there at the store even if not open, but you’re gonna have to ask your higher ups if there will be any compensation for the rest of your shifts you were meant to work because it depends on decisions at the DM level. If not you may be able to come to an agreement about using sick hours to make up for that pay?? Best of luck that’s wild.

honestly when this happened to our store and the water was off, i just kinda sat around and got paid for it. you can write it in the book or make sure to clock in/clock out. they made us stay there from 9am-12 i was just hanging out and cleaning stuff since i like cleaning.
one time, the registers were down, and they made us stay until they started working again. the repairmen came in for it and they didn’t get it working until we left, so i made sure i wrote my time in the book
