If anyone is reading this... hi. I'm just documenting my time at starbucks since I just started working here a few days ago and it's my first ever job, and I wanna have this to look back on or suin... idk.
Its been great so far. I finally finished all my atensi stuff so I worked on the bar today. However, this morning when I was working and the coffee was being made, I felt really nauseated by the smell. It was the strangest feeling ever. I've drank coffee before and stuff but that scent made me feel so ill and weak that I had to wear a mask for a bit. When I wasn't wearing a mask it made me feel so dizzy that I thought I would throw up and/or pass out. After a while I kinda got used to it and I could work on the till without wearing my mask but it was so bizzare... I was scared I would have to stop working there lol cause it was really bad but we're good now.
The till!! It was a lot easier to use than I thought it would be, it was kinda fun actually. However whenever people would order I would get nervous that I got their order wrong and they would get an allegic reaction and die or something. Also, I kept forgetting to ask people for their names! I even wrote on a post it note "ASK FOR NAMES" and I still forgot :).
I accidentally used the meat tongs for the vegan sandwich thingy which I was really upset about. It said "beyond meat" so I thought it was meat but I guess i was wrong. That really bothered me tbh. I know it was just a mistake but still.
Also the starbucks I work at is like right across the road from the hilton hotel so a lot of celebrities come here. I was told that Jay Park was here a couple days ago but I'm not really a Jay Park fan... also some members of epik high were here yesterday and one of the cover workers chose to come to our starbucks specifically so he could meet them lol. He managed to get a picture with them so good for him ig. I had already left by the time they came but I'm not really familiar with them so it's cool.
For my next shift I'm gonna make sure to get some sleep and eat some breakfast so that the coffee smell doesn't bother me as much. I heard that helps. It makes sense cause I hadn't eaten and had gotten 4 hours of sleep since I was doing opening.
But yeah that was day 3 it's going good so far I love working here. I hope my coffee nauseation thing stops.

You guys have meat tongs as opposed to one tong that’s used for everything and then swapped out whenever it’s visibly dirty?
Mafiya7 [OP]4 points11m ago
Lmao yes 😭, it was so heavily emphasised in my training that you're not supposed to use the wrong tongs due to cross contamination. But this makes me feel so much better lol. I can't imagine only having one tong.
HamburgIar_9 points11m ago
Wow...I can't imagine having two separate tongs.

There's 3. One for meat, one for veggies and one for the bakery.
And then there's the ones for the tea cause you're not supposed to touch the tea bag.

Are you in the US?

i got nauseated at the smell too?!? it was so weird to me but when i step foot into starbucks for my first couple weeks it was sickening, i had to wear a mask. it’s fine now though, i have no idea why it felt that way.
other than that i hope your shifts go well and you have a good time, i love it here so far :)

Yes it was very strange! I think my confusion was adding to the symptoms as well. It's weird cause I've been to other coffee shops but the smell of the coffee never gave me such a strange reaction. It's good to hear it got better for you though. It makes me feel optimistic cause I was worried I would have to quit lol.
And thank you!!

tbh i just assumed it was a lot of workplace anxiety lol, starbucks is my first job after all. and yeah, nowhere else i go to gives me that reaction and i still get it sometimes if i get a good whiff of an espresso shot

Sometimes the smell can be a bit overwhelming but You'll get used to it trust me. Also don't stress about taking orders. If you're afraid of messing up say "okay let me repeat this back to you to make sure it's correct" and repeat back everything. If there was a mistake and they don't catch it it's on them. Don't beat yourself up over everything. Everyone makes mistakes when they first get hired and you're bound to make more. It's a part of the learning process. I've been at Starbucks almost 4 years and still make mistakes. It happens even to the best partners. I really hope you enjoy working there. Like I said I am 4 years in and I still enjoy my job
