Do You Have That One Regular That Puts You On Alert Upon Arrival?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by JustATrailsFan
Greetings,
I think everyone knows or has known at least one person in their life who raises the mental alarm once their presence has been established (not neccesarily dislike, just guard up more than normal). This is likely doubly true for café workers such as yourselves. What is that customer like? What does he or she order, and what about them is unpleasant for you or makes you uncomfortable?
For me, there is a somewhat elder (maybe high fifties or really low sixties?) regular who comes just about every single day of the week at around similar times and orders the same hot chocolate (maybe some chips too occasionally). Venti, whole milk, sans whip, sans room, kids temp. He is extremely conscious about cleanliness. When you ring him up, he does not want you touching his receipt; he gets it himself (cool, less work for me, I suppose?). If those pesky bag of chips elude the scanner, do not dare grab his bag of chips to smooth out the barcode because it is unsanitary (he berated me for this). When you start to make his hot chocolate, there he is at the counter watching you like a hawk every single step of the way to make absolute certain you get everything right and never missing a beat with touching anything the wrong way (he watches even closer when it is cupping time). If prices go up, he will ask you about it ("uhhh, did you do it right, it used to be x price?"). Just very diligent in general.
Now, just to clarify, I am not trying to dunk on him for wanting to be diligent about cleanliness. That is totally fair. But, like anything, I think there is a such thing as too much, and it becomes too much policing and worrying. He just strikes me as one of those overly "woke" people and super confident on his years of experience type of person from dialogues with him. I do not dislike him on a personal level, but he does instill a sense of dread when I see him walk in (a number of my coworkers feel the same).
Do you have any of these types?

I’m beefing with a regular that’d come in every morning, get a pike, cream in a short cup, 4 sugars and a stir stick. He pays using the app and if you take more than 1 second trying to scan his barcode he gets mad. He also get visibly angry if you didn’t give him his whole order at once or forget what his order is. The other day he came in and got something other than drip, I was the barista on bar and I made sure to decaf that drink for him.

a regular comes in and says “one venti green matcha, with the ice” and I say “matcha cream Frappuccino?” him: “NO!! matcha, with the ice!! Extra ice and 7 scoops of matcha.” me: “so the matcha cream Frappuccino” (I already know what he wants, which is the frap, but he’s rude asf so i play the airhead barista to make him angrier).
another regular always gets a quad shot extra hot caramel macchiato and watches you like a hawk to make sure you make it right (im the barista, thanks). it makes me really anxious and my hands get shaky when I make the drink because he gets super angry and rude if u don’t do the crosshatch perfectly. it’s gotten to the point where I say “hello (regular), (coworker) will be making your drink.” bc I can’t interact with him 🙃
JustATrailsFan [OP]9 points11m ago
Greetings,
That sounds like a real pain. I do not mind if you stand by the counter to wait for your drink or even putting on a little show for you if you are just really curious about the process, but the policing is just really uncomfortable. 😔 I admire your tenacity in getting through that customer obstable regularly.
I totally feel you in that first paragraph with customers trying to correct you on drink names. Seriously, just shut up and go with it and move to the next thing or step already.

vanilllacakez4 points11m ago
Wait but matchas can come iced ?
vareenoo8 points11m ago
Yes but he wants the frap. he’s a regular so we know what wants

we have a few, one older guy who has a track record of being predatory toward the female partners in the store, once he even walked behind the counter to try to pull a partners hair while she was at warming. he’s got one more shot before he’s officially banned and we get to kick him out, according to my SM. when he walks in all the girls on the floor simultaneously groan and a few even go into the back so they don’t have to see him.
We have one lady who comes through the drive through and always orders a “double tall slightly wet capuchino” so we put “light foam” on the customizations since “wet” isn’t an option on our screens. every single time, no matter what, she says “no, not light foam, i like the foam, just slightly wet” and we say every time “that’s just the button we have to press, we’ll make sure it’s what you want” but every time she has to make a scene about how it doesn’t look right on the screen because we can’t put “slightly wet” on the customizations
we have one who comes through and asks for a lemon loaf, but specifically a middle piece, not stubby or short, it needs to be the one with the most surface area. even if we grab the one that has the most area in our batch, if it doesn’t meet their expectations, she will come back in and complain and MAKE US SHOW HER THE TRAY SO SHE CAN PICK HER OWN.. yeah
there’s one lady who always wants us to scan her gift card to reload $10, then pay for that $10 with her debit card, then use the same gift card to pay for the order so that she can get the stars.. and she wants it all done in the same transaction and if you take too many steps or you do it the way she doesn’t like, she complains and asks for a refund and a manager. she’s always wearing 2 n95 masks, rubber gloves, and sunglasses so we literally have no idea what she looks like underneath all that but literally E V E R Y T I M E
so yeah those are mine🤭
JustATrailsFan [OP]4 points11m ago
Greetings,
That first scenario is truly disturbing. If you are a female, please be careful and stay safe (if you are male, then do so anyway 😁 and look out for those gals as best you can). On a slightly unrelated note, I am a guy who works with one other guy in cafe, while the rest of the cafe workers (along with the entire store cast including booksellers) are female, so it is quite fascinating. 😅
The second instance is the primary reason I do not like using cafe lingo (wet, dry, dirty, etc.) and just stick with nore concrete wording. I do not think it is bad, it just makes me wary.
The lemon loaf lady can go screw off, as can everyone like that.
I hate gift cards.
Thanks so much for sharing your story. You have clearly been through a lot, and I respect your skill and discipline to get through it all.

My job is not that detrimental to have a customer touch me. I’m sorry but someone like that deserves a really hard punch to the face. That’s WRONG to EVER put your hands on a woman. YUCK 🤢 i witnessed a customer come up to partner sitting on her break, her g-string was showing, and the customer pulled down her shirt for her. He was IMMEDIATELY BANNED
CommonFaithlessness11 points11m ago
It baffles me that your SM didn’t immediately ban that guy?? He came behind the counter to try and assault a partner.. That is so scary
Amy_H2117 points11m ago
We have a regular who will wait outside the store for 30+ minutes waiting for us to open and gets a grande strawberries and cream frap with extra ice. She then stands at the end of the bar, leaning over the counter watching you make her drink and then when you scoop the ice goes “I said extra ice remember”
I always do a venti scoop and then an extra pump of base so I don’t blow the motor in the blender and she gets so mad because she “wants it chunky” bestie I’m not breaking my blender because you want a thick ass frap
Sometimes when she’s really pissing me off I make sure to splash the base on her so she gets away from the counter and then I put her drink on the handoff counter instead of handing it to her directly..sorry not sorry
JustATrailsFan [OP]3 points11m ago
Greetings,
Dear me, sorry you have to deal with that. I am starting to become more annoyed with these customers' micromanagerial tendencies the more I read about cases like yours. You really made me laugh at the end there, and I do not blame you one bit.
Cheers, co is
ellensaige10 points11m ago
we have a regular who comes in most days and gets a quad espresso macchiato or a venti iced matcha with 20 ice cubes (she specifies every day and gets mad if you don't put an ask me that says 20 ice cubes) she's super particular about the macchiato too and will stare at you through the drive thru while you make it. whenever she orders the macc she just HAS to say "make it with just shots and foam" as if that's not the recipe. she's so frustrating and bitches about every little thing
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
Twenty ice cubes? That is very new to me. 😵 I do not understand how people allow themselves to get so worked up with such trivial or meaningless details on a regular basis and not get tired of it.
Cheers, co is
PiscesQueen249 points11m ago
She stopped coming often but there used to be a daily regular who would throw a toddler fit if we were out of the strawberry inclusions because homegirl demands an entire bag in her Trenta pink drink , I hate that there’s no charge for extra berries because she would be such a bitch if it didn’t “ have enough “ . If I ever see her in public it’s on sight .
JustATrailsFan [OP]4 points11m ago
Greetings,
Man, those kind of customers are hard to deal with.
Cheers, co is
Poptart09111 points11m ago
There is a button for strawberry pieces. If she wants that many damn extra berries I'd charge her for it
PiscesQueen241 points11m ago
Wait where because I’ve tried charging her before and it wouldn’t 😭😭
Poptart09111 points11m ago
I can't remember exactly what the button says, I'll have to check tomorrow
rascallytrashbergs1 points11m ago
“Toddler fit” reminds me of the time a mom came in and honest to god stuck her lip out and pouted like a child at me for several seconds when I told her the bathroom was closed

When I worked at a different licensed store, all the other employees got really annoying variations on pikes (cause they got a free refill of brewed coffee only as an employee "perk" so god knows they NEEDED to get that every day). I'm talking 20 splendas, 1/3 cream, twice a day and they expect your to memorize their particular order. This is annoying but still within the realms of acceptable. My standards for what is acceptable have to be really low in order to not go crazy.
One guy would loiter around my kiosk starting at like 5:50 while I pointedly ignored him as I was setting up for the open, and he'd complain that I wouldn't serve him early. Sorry, no customers till I flip the lights on at 6! He'd order his venti pike with extra cream and 18 equals and call me darling and sweetie and all sorts of other pet names. Hated it, but what can you do.
The real problem was, at around ten or eleven every day, he wanted his free refill. He accomplished this by *calling me, on the phone behind my counter, from wherever he was in the backroom*. "I'm ready for my refill, sweetie" or "You know what I want, dear" and that was my cue to start prepping his eight million sugar packets as he walked up from the back.
That phone call was the low point of my day, every day. It was always so creepy and made me so uncomfortable. Like holy shit.
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
Sorry you had to deal with that person. I cannot properly imagine how maddening that can get, especially coming from fellow employees. Who knew pikes could get so ridiculous with the editing? Thank you for sharing your story, and I hope you are well and in a better store (or a better occupation if not the store)

for us it’s not one person, but this massive family of like 12 people. they’re fucking horrible. i have not a single nice thing to say about those assholes. they were banned once sometime last year, and then after 6mos the ban was lifted. they’re even worse now. their orders aren’t complicated (usually just brewed coffee and maybe a refresher here and there) so that’s not the issue. they scream at us and belittle us. we make at least 7 incident reports each week, sometimes more if they come in groups instead of all at once.
JustATrailsFan [OP]1 points11m ago
Greetings,
Geez, that is terrible! This is by far the largest issue I have heard about thus far. So sorry you had to endure that nonsense. Customers can be absolute animals sometimes.

We have this regular who has a thing for one of our batistas (and by thing I mean he has a fetish for her race). And he is the CREEPIEST dude. He loves talking to the person on cafe bar about ALL the girlfriends he has and and tries to show us pictures and talks himself up like he's Chris Hemsworth and not some average jo shmo. He also always says how we should just work for him because he pays triple what we make yet he sees us scramble during peak and does the "working hard or hardly working ;)" schmit. And then he gets political which is never fun. And once we finish his drink he's always like "alright let's see how you did" and 9/10 he makes the "oh I think you messed my drink up" joke and it's super annoying. He always bothers us on our breaks if we're sitting in the lobby. He just sits down next to whoever is there and starts talking. He's just overly creepy. And it doesn't help he's like 60 and our oldest batista is 25.
The second any of us see him we immediately sigh and pray for our poor co-workers who have to take and then make his order. We've literally had to save each other from him by being like "oh [batista name] come help me with this! Get me some milk. It's time to switch positions. Do a trash run. Etc. Etc." Because he WILL. NOT. STOP. TALKING.
JustATrailsFan [OP]1 points11m ago
Greetings,
There is a guy who frequents our store who thinks it is okay to go around at other people's tables and sales pitch his religional dominance to them (including us workers, on or off the clock). The manager gets on him about that not being okay, and the guy later ask little old me to team up with him to sue my boss. I listened to his story while on my break, gave him a very kind "you do whatever you think you have to do" answer, and he still wanted me to think about it. Next shift, he came up to the register asking my partner if he could talk to me. In a nutshell, she was just like 'nah, mate, get away, he is on 5he clock". He just waited for me to finish my shitt to chat again.
All that to say that I sort of understand a bit of your issue, if only barely relatable. That guy is a total animal though.

sofaye-go6 points11m ago
we have a lot of annoying regulars but this one in particular comes in like twice a day and wants her teas made very particularly and she wants us to fill like 3 big mugs with ice because she likes our ice ig guess but my first day i asked her what her name was and she laughs and say “they don’t know my name” to my shift… ma’am i’ve never met you before lmao
JustATrailsFan [OP]3 points11m ago
Greetings,
What a green bean amateur you are; any barista worth the salt should know who amongst the strangers are regulars or not and their names. Continue your training, you trash.
On a serious note, that blows, having to see the same undesirable customer(s) more than once in a day. She truly gets that much ice? Why? I guess to use for other drinks she has? 🤔

she said she likes it cause of the triple purification idk what she does with it lmaoo

i have one who comes in for such a "difficult" drink that he has changed the name on his gold card to something akin to "Difficult Dramatist" and don't you dare ask his real name (it's something akin to Bob, and i make sure to call him Bob frequently because fuck you). he stands over the bar and narrates how to make his drink, and only recognizes white partners who have made it before (one of my POC baristas has made his drink 47 times and he always asks her if she understands how to do it).
he has asked a barista if they have ADHD. he asked a POC barista where she was from, and then where her parents are from, because "that's not a name from here". he has pet a seeing eye dog who was on duty at the time.
when i called him out on a few of these things he proceeded to tell me that people in this country are just soooo sensitiveeee and when he visits other countries and asks in the local language if people are ticklish, they laugh. and it's so weird how people get creeped out by that question in this country.
yes, you read that right. this customer has learned to ask "are you ticklish" in 9 different languages just to *make people laugh* and not because he's a creepy lonely old white guy whose kids don't talk to him anymore.

We have one lady who has been banned by several Starbucks in the area and she usually causes problems. And then some days, she’s completely chill. Her daughter has explained she is mentally ill, so I try to be compassionate, but she will literally call corporate while cursing you out.
MrsOceanGrown3 points11m ago
I had a customer who had something “off” about him. He called us all “madam” like he was French but he wasn’t. He would order a water and have us rinse the cup with filtered water first and then dump it out and fill it up again with water because he was sure that particles came out of the first batch of water. He would spend 5+ minutes ordering, his hot “illegally blonde roast” with steamed milk and leave 2 cm space from the liquid to the top of the cup. And if you put a “green stick in the whole” he’s have you remake the entire thing because now plastic particles have melted into the hot beverage. He’d take advantage of baristas and eventually our manger told him we can’t do the extra procedures he’s demanding. She told him if he simply wants a water we will make the water how we normally make it. But he needs to be respectful of other customers who have ordered before him, or are waiting behind him. He also spit when he spoke.
Imaginary-Fix-24693 points11m ago
The REGULARS that pretend you have such a good relationship and ask for a free drink 5 times before you say no and laugh give up and say a manager said no, to not do that recently and they laugh and say is it, "so and so" and uncomfortably laugh and say yes, and then walk away after they finally pay for your labor
Those that dont RESPECT boundaries and cant take "were out of this" as a respectable answer because its been purchased too much today and we ran out of it because we uphold fresh ingredients as best as possible yet when they come at 10 PM at closing and were out of it they get all pissy👏🏻
The people that ask you for your number and you are scared and walk away 🥲
dnims243 points11m ago
We have one lady that I no longer deal with personally. She comes every day and orders an iced coffee with milk and 12 pumps of classic. The very first time I met her I punched it in as “iced coffe w milk” and I guess it charged like 30 cents more? We went back and forth about the price for a bit but my manager let it slide as the regular price she’s used to paying. I still disagree to this day.
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago

Regular who normally mobile orders (I refuse to make the drink so I don’t know it) but she will only allow certain partners to make it. Everyday she will ask and if she doesn’t like that person she needs it remade we have tried to lie about it but it’s like she can sense who made it. All I know is that she orders a tr something and gets it split in 2 venti cups.
graylikesoap3 points11m ago
we have a regular who comes in and as soon as anyone sees her get out of her car we let everyone else know because we start her drinks quickly. she’s not only rude about her drinks but she’s had a past of being racist about who made her drink(s). she orders two grande white mochas (hot) in a venti cup, one 180°, one 190°, both stirred, and wants whip on them both to fill the empty space on top (since it’s a grande drink in a venti cup)
a couple times she’s claimed some part of smth is wrong on either drink and she’s said racist things about my coworkers (for reference she is an older white woman- probably about 65~) and has no problem being difficult and extremely insensitive/ racist directly to their faces as well.
i dread her entire existence 🙂

we had a regular at my old store who would come every day, sometimes twice, and get a hot coffee with shots, and a bunch of customizations. making the drink never bothered me, it’s whatever, but the dude always gave me the creeps when was the barista on window.
a few weeks later, he hit on one of our underage baristas, and gave her his number after she told him she was underage. our supervisor told him to never come back. he came back anyway, and would get dirty looks and decaf shots from every barista working

yeah. it was super infuriating that our manager didn’t do anything as well, and he was just allowed to come back
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
I said it in another comment and will happily say it again now: every time the manager bends over to the will of these animals disguised as customers, the customers get more and more confident and daring. And the workers end up paying the price much of the time. 😔

We had recently banned this guy but every time he came to the kiosk, everyone would be at the ready for some bs he’d pull. I can make a whole post and a half about him by the way.
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
I am rather curious to read your story sometime to any degree you are comfortable sharing. I am not sure what madness this customer attempted, but i hope everyone was safe and okay by the end of it.

SortaSketchyNDed8 points11m ago
I could list a few things off actually!
-He usually gets a Venti 7 pump mocha, 7 pump white mocha, 5 pump caramel syrup, no whip, no room, kids temp drink. If it even LOOKS like you miscounted your pumps, he’d yell at you. He yelled at several of our new kiosk employees. Oh he’d also pick on someone for counting them out loud because “what are you, a child?”
-For some reason, he had a great time misgendering EVERYONE on purpose. We have a couple of trans coworkers so that really upset me personally. Even if you correct or gesture, he’d insist he was correct. Okay then Carl (not his real name)
-Everyone the price came up, he’d always have something to say. “Too much. Lower it. I’m a senior.” “Too low. Don’t take me for a poor person”
-He’d often make disgusting comments towards the girls who work here. He’d make comments like “at least a WOMAN” (surprise he got it right for once) is making me a drink” “I want a WOMAN to heat up my sandwiches” “a WOMAN should be doing this” etc. Y’all know’‘em and hate’em.
-We have a customer who’s the sweetest with a big service dog. They’re both so damn sweet and this makes my blood boil typing this but he’d often try and disturb the service dog at some points.
-Speaking if that, his ban came after he followed a girl to the restroom after making her cry cus he yelled at her. (He was stopped by a couple of the grocery store men) Hasn’t been seen for weeks. I’m still upset about other things he’s done but I’ll save those stories for later.
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
Christ mate, this guy is off his rocker. Sorry you guys had to deal with such an unsavory individual. I hope the gal was/is okay after everything. I have never known someone to complain about a price being too low. That dog part is very infuriating, I do not understand how people can let themselves get that low. Thanks for sharing your story, mate. Hats off yo you and your team for getting through that monstrosity of a customer.

At my store, we have a man who doesn’t come in everyday but pretty regularly and he usually always comes in the mornings when we have blonde roast still brewing. however, he will not drink the blonde we have brewed; he literally will only drink pour over blonde. He gets a tall blonde pour over (three and a half scoops of blonde in the funnel), no sugar, and just a *touch* of two percent foam on top just to change the color slightly. if anyone ever questions him, he will say something like “are you new? the others always do it for me.” He is so annoying, but polite at the same time. He has almost a British accent but not.
devilsreject49262 points11m ago
Maybe he has contamination OCD or germophobia? I'm like that as well, honestly. Can't stand to be put on drive thru because I hate touching people's nasty credit cards and unwashed hands. Personally I am only put off by the nosy or creepy customers who try to dig into personal life or flirt inappropriately.
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
He very well could, but I have no idea ultimately. I do not mind personal questions to a degree, but I do not know where you draw the line before said question(s) turn into digging. Flirting excessively or inappropriately is a no-go indeed.

Did you consider he might have OCD?
JustATrailsFan [OP]2 points11m ago
Greetings,
I had to google OCD, and I never knew there was an illness for this kind of thing. Maybe he does, but no amount of speculation will make me certain.
Like I said, I do not look down on the guy, but he does make me wary and sigh a lot when I see him enter.

It would certainly explain the cleanliness stressing part. He SEEMED like he was a normal guy (likes manga) and can be pleasant and educational to have dialogue with. Then again, I am the least qualified person to determine who has a mental block and who does not.
