Manager doesn’t want me to make certain foods (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SortaSketchyNDed
For context, I work in a kiosk Starbucks in a grocery store so we haven’t gotten some items like actual chain stores have. Recently, a new item for the new Pumpkin Spice season has dropped. I’m allergic to nuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts etc. My manager doesn’t let me make any drinks with almond milk and doesn’t let me near certain foods.

I got a text this morning from my boss letting me know I will not be doing training for a new item and if I’m alone and someone orders it, I cannot make it. It’s either someone else makes it or the customer has to get something else/go somewhere else to get it.
Your guy’s thoughts?

that seems really considerate of your manager. If your allergy isn’t that bad and you can handle the allergen as long as you don’t ingest/prolonged skin contact, maybe let them know that?

Update: For anyone asking, my manager is super sweet and they are very accommodating. I personally feel like they’re prioritizing my safety and that’s not something you see every day. We had a good talk today, I doodled them a little cat and we talked about the launch. Apparently, they had an employee break out/have a reaction and they didn’t want anyone else to have something scary like that so they just wanna play it safe. (Which I understand). As for gloves and masks, our stand uses both already due to Covid numbers.

Thank y’all for the comments btw!❤️❤️❤️

might have to try to get some form of doctors note or something to prove that you’re fine or at least a written note with your signature maybe? just saying that you can handle these things, just not eat or touch for prolonged periods. she’s probably just trying to avoid getting sued and letting you have an allergic reaction on the floor, so the intent is in the right spot as far as I can tell. just let her know and maybe offer a doctors note if you have the ability to or offer to get it in writing.

Maybe wear gloves when handling food/allergen items? It seems to me like your manager is being very considerate and taking your health and safety very seriously! so that's a plus in my book. Is your manager rude or mean about it or something?

ur manager is goated, i wanna see if i could ask my manager about this since pork is forbidden in my religion and tbh getting that random oil on you by mistake when taking a double smoked out the oven is nasty

Technically we can never promise anything from Starbucks is allergy free. We used shared equipment, same milk steamer for almond milk and dairy milk and soy milk etc. same tongs and oven for an almond croissant and plain bagel. The best I can suggest for you and your store with this new product is to wear gloves and wash everything very well, three sink compartment method and the dishwasher. And maybe wear gloves and a mask? Your main concern is to keep an epipen on you and have all your supervisors learn how to help you if you go into anaphylactic shock. Make sure your emergency contact is up to date. If you don’t already have some then you can ask your pharmacist for some practice epipens for your shift supervisors and even fellow baristas to know how to properly administer it and to call 911. If you can afford it keep an epipen somewhere close in your store where everyone knows where it is. This can be discussed with your manager and I recommend anyone with any allergies or medical stuff to do something similar for their own situation. Better to be over prepared and waste time than to be under prepared and lose a partner.

Don’t you have gloves? I worked with a girl with the same allergy and she just wore gloves on bar.
