new barista! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by deannxterr
i was hired last week after years of wanting to work for starbucks and one unsuccessful interview in 2020, and i’m feeling kind of nervous. i haven’t started training yet, i just did my onboarding this morning, and i’ve never worked in an environment as fast paced as starbucks is. i have plenty of work experience overall, but i’m anxious about messing up or not being able to grasp everything fast enough. does anyone have any advice or words of wisdom? thank you!! :)

don't be afraid to ask questions! don't feel bad if you make a mistake or have trouble remembering everything at first, we've all been there and even baristas who've been there for years will mess up drinks from time to time! you'll be great!

thank you for the encouragement!! <3<3

Seriously. Ask so many questions. It’s the one thing I tell all new partners.
deannxterr [OP] 6 points 11m ago
thank you!! i tend to feel like i ask too many questions, but it seems like that might be a good thing during this training!
CamdenF 5 points 11m ago
It’s impossible to ask too many. Trust me. I had a trainee ask nonstop questions. Now she has an understanding of what she’s doing and is successful in her role!
deannxterr [OP] 4 points 11m ago
that’s really relieving to hear, thank you so much!

i just recently hit the 1 year mark of being a partner. i knew nothing about coffee, had no faith in myself, and sucked for a long time. people will tell you it clicks around the 3 month mark, and they’re absolutely right. you’ll be making a drink and realize you didn’t have to think about it, and then it becomes muscle memory instead of thinking “ok pour to first line.. 2 shots in a grande… etc”. i am now (humbly) one of the best bar partners at my store. it gets better & easier and i love my job!
deannxterr [OP] 2 points 11m ago
thank you!! i’m also really glad to hear you love your job, i’m very excited to work for starbucks bc i’ve heard so many people gush about how much they love the company.

Don't be afraid to make yourself a cheat sheet index card to keep in your apron until you memorize the syrup/espresso/etc ratios. (Be sure to water-test the pen ink you use since it's very likely your apron will get wet and smudge your notecard).

If you start feeling overwhelmed, don't be afraid to ask for a helping hand or a second to breath. No one expects you to get a hang of it 100% right off the bat and no one will fault you for it, it's better to take a break than to let other baristas waste time making a drink that was punched in wrong. Slow and accurate is better than fast and full of mistakes.

Don't feel obligated to put up with customers who swear at/belittle you. Being a punching bag is not in your job description. You are all within your right to stop serving that customer and ask for a supervisor's/manager's assistance if a customer is harassing you.

During downtime, it's a good idea to look over the button layout on the ordering screen and try to memorize where key common items are for quick access (caramel macchiatos, refreshers, etc).

If you work in a small store- DO NOT STAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WALKWAYS ESPECIALLY DURING PEAK. Be mindful that people are going to be walking back and forth, \*\*stand on one side or the other and be aware of your surroundings if you're just chatting/idling.\*\* I don't care too much if people are chatting or being ""lazy"" but I get so annoyed with people stand in the middle of the walkway with both hands on their hips, elbows jutting out and absent mindedly in my way when I'm trying to quickly get something to bar or running food for ovens.

thank you so much!! especially for the advice about the customers. i have experience in retail and customer service and i find myself very often letting customers be rude because i don’t want to get in trouble, so it’s definitely very relieving to be reminded and hear that i can ask for a supervisor’s assistance!
[deleted] 2 points 11m ago
Absolutely. I know exactly what you mean, I've worked at several retail and fast food places in my life and I will say Starbucks is definitely one of the more healthy work environments I've experienced. Of course having a bad manager might slightly skew this one way or another but Starbucks does an amazing job standing behind their employees and care a lot about their partners (as much as a corporation can care about them anyways lol)
deannxterr [OP] 2 points 11m ago
that’s really good to hear! i haven’t met any of the other employees yet bc i haven’t started my training, but the store manager is really sweet and has been very understanding about my schedule because i’m a full time student, so it seems so far like i have a pretty good manager!

When it comes to recipes, EVERYONE forgets them. There's so many things to remember that they all mix into one jumble of numbers and quantities. Don't be afraid to ask or look up what goes in a drink. I have partners who have worked at my store for yeeaaarrrs and we still bounce recipes between each other or look them up. Eventually you'll get the hang of it. Soon tenured partners will be asking you what goes in something lol

Ahoy Mikey_LiS! Nay bad but me wasn't convinced. Give this a sail:

When it hails t' recipes, ALL HANDS forgets 'em. There's so many things t' remember that they all mix into one jumble o' numbers n' quantities. Don't be afraid t' ask or look up what goes in a drink. me have partners who have worked at me store fer yeeaaarrrs n' our jolly crew still bounce recipes betwixt each other or look 'em up. Eventually you'll get thar hang o' it. Soon tenured partners will be asking ye what goes in something blimey

Oh my god I this is beautiful
deannxterr [OP] 1 points 11m ago
that’s so relieving to hear!! sometimes as a customer i would really wonder how everyone remembered everything because there’s so many drinks, so hearing that even long time partners can’t always remember is definitely a big help!
spookysznneverends 3 points 11m ago
It’s a great place to work, be honest with yourself and others about how you are feeling and let them know when you have questions or if you get overwhelmed.
deannxterr [OP] 2 points 11m ago
thank you!! i’m really excited to start because i’ve known a lot of people who worked for the company and absolutely loved it, so i’m looking forward to having a job that i hopefully really love doing!!

Lots of really great advice here, so I'll just add - don't forget to put the lid on your blender. Oof, that was embarrassing. My trainer felt terrible she didn't catch it, and assured me over and over that she did the same when she started, but it didn't help 😂 Hindsight, it was such a non-issue. Like I just laugh about it now, and if I saw someone else do it I'd probably do the exact same as my trainer.
deannxterr [OP] 2 points 11m ago
oh god i’m so sorry for laughing but that is absolutely hilarious. i could only imagine the embarrassment i would feel if that happened to me, but i’m so glad that at least your trainer wasn’t upset about it!! i will definitely keep in mind to always put the lid on the blender LMAO

The Latte is the blueprint for almost every hot drink.

Mocha/WM is just a latte with M/WM Pumps, Americano is a latte with hot water instead of steamed milk, Cappuccino is just a latte with more foam (steam milk longer), etc. Just ask questions and remember 1 1 2 2 :)
deannxterr [OP] 1 points 11m ago
oh that’s relieving to hear!! so for most hot drinks it would be memorizing one drink and adjusting, that’s awesome!
hotlinee 2 points 11m ago
the starbucks app and the POS are good resources if you forget drink recipes. they tell you the amount of shots, pumps of syrup, toppings, etc. it helped me learn the recipes a lot quicker
deannxterr [OP] 1 points 11m ago
oh that’s really interesting!! i have a lot of experience mobile ordering lmao, so i kind of have a rough idea about what goes in to the drinks i commonly order. i hadn’t thought about looking at the other drinks to sort of study!! thank you!!!
jazzysoranio 2 points 11m ago
Take notes, try your best, practice, fail, try again, take it seriously but also remind yourself that it’s just coffee and it’s not the end of the world if you make a mistake as long as you’re actually putting forth an actual effort.
deannxterr [OP] 2 points 11m ago
thank you!! i want to do well at this job, so i’m going to put as much effort as i can in. i’m glad to hear that the effort counts!!
CheesiestSlice 2 points 11m ago
I came to Starbucks with over a decade in the service industry, and my first month-ish I thought to myself, "there's no way I can remember all this." So if you catch yourself thinking along those lines, just know that that's normal, and you'll absolutely get it.

Along with the other comments, absolutely ask questions. Even if you know you've asked a question before, ask it again.

Good luck and have fun! A lot of the parts of the job are fun.
deannxterr [OP] 1 points 11m ago
thank you!! i will definitely be asking questions constantly. i’m hoping my limited knowledge from being a very regular customer helps me to remember some of the stuff!
