Is it possible to give a good customer a free drink at the register? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Passion-Syrup
I was thinking when I meet a really nice customer once in a while and I want to make their day, can I just give it to them without charge? I've seen a barista do it once and wonder if it is possible.

Instead of right now recovery or partner markout, we use discount code 115 . It will cover the entire price of one drink, no food or anything, and only once per transaction :) be careful you're not using it too often though, as other comments suggest you don't wanna be seen as just giving a bunch of stuff away for free

This would fall under "surprise and delight" for a customer. I don't know if it's still in the training but we were told we have the power to do stuff like this (on a limited basis) to surprise and delight our customers. If someone is breaking down crying in the drive-thru with some kind of devastating news we can get their drink for them. Or to thank people for being great, stuff like that. You don't want to use it too much but you can do Right Now Recovery on their drink to make it free.

I think the Starbucks term is "surprise and delight" it will keep customers coming back and you get to "reward" that. Just don't abuse Right Now Recovery and you should be okay 😊

I definitely have!

not sure what store policy says but i’d always just give them a recovery card. my trainer told me i’d never get in trouble for handing those out, so that’s how i thank people for being kind/patient/a decent human being.

Please don’t risk your employment for this. I know of a partner who was trained to use right now recovery when orders were backed up in the drive thru and they fired him. He was the scapegoat to teach a lesson across the board. What’s even worse it was labeled as him stealing from the company. I was under the impression to never ever use right now recovery

aw that's a bummer, but I rather not risk losing my job

So you won't lose your job. I just retook the barista basics (I'm a shift and trainer and wanted to see what the new training entailed) and it literally says to do what you're asking about. It talks about coming drinks if you think it'll make their day. The example it gave was seeing a regular who was having a bad day, or a mother who seemed tired and her children seemed a little hyper (the barista only comped an extra shot for that one tho). I'd say you can do it, but very rarely. And if anyone gives you a hard time, just refer to the training and remember what the reason was for why you think it was a good thing to do.

wait where does it say this?

I believe there were several videos on this topic on the customer connection (idk if that is the exact title, but it's that vibe) module in the barista basic first 30 training, aka the new training that they recently put out for the new people.

It’s physically impossible. You’re hands will fall off before they cross the window line.

I definitely have done this before. We have a usual every single day who comes for the same thing and every once in a while we just let her pass through drive and zero it out. SM does it, shifts do it, we’ve all done it. She always is amazing to us, tips us, talks to us when she comes in, and pretty much knows everyone there. Literally like she’s a worker too but not really lmao. Shes the best

Yes. Just select the item, press "% off" and take 100% off that drink. Easy peasy and you're not flagged for right now recovery.

A little girl was on her way to her 4th birthday party in my drive thru yesterday and I gave them a couple of cake pops on the house. I used my food mark out but I’m sure there’s a way to use a discount to make it free
pezookazoo 1 points 11m ago
i use right now recovery. only once in a while. right now recovery can be used for all different circumstances i learned through my 13+ store manager and i use it on my favorite nicest customers, or when someone just needs a free drink that day
Canadiansbux -9 points 11m ago
At my location you would have to pay for the drink or else it's theft.
Affectionate_Fart -24 points 11m ago
Oh yeah. My store does it all the time. Just hit save order instead though and not too often.
violaaesthetic 27 points 11m ago
Rather than this I would just “right now recovery” it that way it doesn’t stay clogging the order system
Affectionate_Fart -16 points 11m ago
Eh, it depends on if your store tracks that because some stores use that as a “waste checker” ie who/why are we remaking a bunch of drinks. Besides, it prints orders as they come in…you can even get a name.
violaaesthetic 8 points 11m ago
It’s less about the sticker and more about having a floating order still open in the system. If you have a drive through, the order you saved will pop up for them instead of their real drive through order. And those dont disappear either. When you eventually go in and cancel the order the register tracks that too. They’ll probably be even more likely to wonder “why are they canceling so many orders?” than “why are they remaking so many orders?”

Just my opinion as a 4 year barista 1.5 year SSV, tho. Not gospel

Fellow string player barista? 👀
Affectionate_Fart -3 points 11m ago
I also don’t work DT anymore, I work strictly cafe, so I don’t/won’t see floating orders.
