Customer still visiting my store after… (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Affectionate_Fart
Complaining to corporate that I was “racist” because I told her I would be charging her for a custom iced tea instead of the charge for peach juice and water. And then when she inquired “why” I was doing that was going on a tangent about how the other Starbucks does it for her. I feel like this disrupts MY third space about feeling comfortable within my store. :/
One of the other shifts I work with said they’d had that done before and expressed how insulted she felt…which I feel is fair?

Anything in water is a custom tea latte, that's Starbucks' rule

Did you ever file an incident report on this? If it keeps happening then she can get banned from the store!

Well she came in again today and became super confrontational with me over her calling corporate and actually said “Corporate said you can’t do that and I’m to get my peach water for .53, that it is not a corporate rule and stores cannot make their own policies.” Needless to say, I informed my manager, but what the actual fuck.

That’s the best you can do! Just know you have every right to politely say “i am sorry but I’m going to need to get my Store manager to help you with this. They are more informed than me I’ll be right back.” Then get your manager and if they are not avail get your shift supervisors. My manager is always available to take my calls. If you feel comfortable calling while the person is there, if they aren’t available to get them to help you with the situation then that would be a good move too. Alway alway alway document it. Your district manager and regional manager both have to go through those and if necessary they have to ban them they will in my experience.

So downside is, I’m typically an opening shift and there are times my manager isn’t available for that. My SM and DM know, I’m just kind of waiting to see direction but hopefully she gets banned because I couldn’t stand her before (her doppio was extra as hell because she wanted her protein drink poured *prior to my arrival, by us* before getting whip and extra cinnamon…

Not to bog down your post, just a question. Why would it be a custom tea instead of just ringing it in as a cup of water with peach? That's what I've seen my coworkers do at my store when people ask for a water with whatever in it ( strawberry inclusions, vanilla, etc.)

starbucks doesn’t sell just ingredients. since the water is free we are essentially just selling the ingredients. so we have to charge it as a custom iced tea as the base drink
xbarbiedarbie 6 points 11m ago
Water with anything other that just water or ice should be charged as a custom tea. The barista still has to hand craft a drink, so it needs to be charged as such. If someone is getting a strawberry water, it's a custom tea. Water with raspberry, it's a custom tea. Every store should do this so there is consistency throughout every store. You don't want your store to be "the other starbucks" because you make life difficult for every starbucks actually following standards.

You would feel insulted if someone doing their job was acting according to the rules and standard we are taught? Also we are allowed to ask customers to leave if they are acting in a way that disrupts the Starbucks environment or makes us uncomfortable.

um we literally can’t just ring you up for water and peach juice. that’s policy but i guess to u it’s racism

as for OP honestly some people just use the racism excuse anytime they don’t get their way. best thing to do is to not let it affect you. you and everyone around u knows that your only enforcing the policy

You can’t sell ingredients, and as a shift, it’s my job to ensure proper ringing in of items, when I don’t, if falls on me. I’m also attempting to transition to corporate after graduation from ASU. Last thing I need them to see and or find is that I don’t follow policy/procedures, have numerous coaching from managers, ect. Some of us look at career pathways verses “this is just a job”. End of the day, I work for a multibillion dollar industry, with numerous career aspects besides retail.

exactly so if they want some peach juice just give it to them, i bet your anti-union also
Responsible_Snow7109 23 points 11m ago
>it’s more of like just give the customer what they want to avoid a headache

But this is the exact reason why this customer told OP that "the other Starbucks does it" line because others are not following policy which actually is what causes a headache
mrcupcake18 6 points 11m ago
Yes! And not only that you are rewarding bad behavior because now she will know that “oh I can just make a fuss and I will get what I want” yes fine I do agree it’s easier to give them what they want so they can leave but that’s more like oh they are just giving attitude or being huffy or something and it’s like here is your order and go. But if they are making you uncomfortable or making you do things outside of policy then hell no I will stick to my guns and I will not give this thing to you because you decide you want to throw a tantrum

Disrupting the third place for anyone, employee or customer, is not tolerated and you will be denied service if you do so.

Also, a custom tea is how you charge for water and peach juice according to standard.
