What is Barista Craft Training? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by iiiimagery
So I looked at my schedule next week and it says training on a day. I asked a shift and they said something about group training? Can someone tell me exactly what this means and what will happen?

You’re literally going to relearn irrelevant things you already know and then have a group therapy session. At least that’s how mine went.

Everyone’s getting trained again

But how would that work while working? 😅 my shift for it is in the morning and our store is super busy then
highestinthestreets 11 points 11m ago
My store is really busy too but they’re closing down drive thru for a couple hours and scheduling only like 4 baristas to get trained and the rest of the partners to work

Interesting! We have a temporary SM before our new SM starts so I'm very curious on how it will go. Lol

Your store will be closed during the training.
joviante 3 points 11m ago
that’s funny they haven’t closed the store during our group training…. they just have six to eight people in the way while the rest try to work
Ordinary-Theory-8289 2 points 11m ago
Wow that’s whack. My district each store in the area is going to be closed each on a different day so they can do the training

Theoretically you should have enough staff that the pod can do its thing and the floor would still have enough people to do its thing. Idk how good your manager is at scheduling though.

You should have done a survey a week or two ago basically about how good you think you are at bar, rating yourself on how well you can do and talk about beverage standards and sequencing. Depending on what you said and a little of your SM’s opinion you’ve been put in a category of learning, owning, or advising, from least to most comfortable. If you’re in the learning or owning group then half of it is a refresher on standards that Starbies thinks aren’t being followed on bar, and if you’re in the advising group then instead of doing bar stuff you’re meant to discuss communicating on the floor and how to give advice to newer ppl. Then no matter which group you’re in you’re meant to talk about dealing with unhappy customers and what to do when there are inappropriate situations (ranging from if someone’s yelling at y’all to situations that merit calling the cops)

There might be some variance depending how organized your store is and if the person who’s leading your group is good at training, but that’s what the craft training is supposed to be.

Replying to add: If your store is chaotic and the training isn’t feeling that useful, still try and get a look at the guide on deescalation bc it will give you a better idea of what Starbies wants you to do when shit gets wild. I know that before I was trained as a shift I didn’t know what to do when there was wild behavior from a customer. Shift training covers some a lot of that stuff bc sometimes you have to act as the manager on site, but I know I would have found it helpful as a barista—like even if you still would need your shift’s help, it might help you to have a better idea what path Starbucks is expecting you to take when you encounter crazy customers

We get paid peanuts. I ain’t deescalating shit.

Ok ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Our floor is small for how busy we are.. we're actually supposed to get a remodel this September, so there would really be no time for training mornings 😅 Also as I said in another reply, our SM quit so we have a replacement one until the new one starts, the new one knows nothing about us sooo! Do you think maybe one of the shifts will lead it then??
celloqueer 2 points 11m ago
It’s meant to be led by barista trainers or shifts! I’m nervous for you bc it does sound like most likely not a ton of thought was put into that scheduling. Like if you’re the group that is supposed to do bar stuff it sounds like an absolute nightmare trying to do that in the morning—ours have been scheduled midday and evening. And even if you’re the advising group that gets to just discuss stuff, I could see that getting shortchanged if your floor ppl are dying.

The only thing I recall my SM asking me about how I'm doing on stuff was when I had to sit down with her and fill out this paper on how strongly I agree or disagree about some stuff like bar, customer support, etc but also emotionally as well. She said it would happen again in a few months or something? That's the closest I can tell but I'm not sure which group I'd go in. And yeah training is always done in the evening or afternoon! I'm so lost on how we could possibly run the store and train. And I can't see my store ever shutting down drive thru.. maybe cafe but it would hardly make a dent. I guess I just gotta go in blind! LOL!
MrsOceanGrown 6 points 11m ago
It’s simply “pod training” just on the back line for two hours of it. Our store was supposed to operate drive thru only at that time, but due to more than 2 call outs, they had to close the whole store for 4 hours
iiiimagery [OP] 2 points 11m ago
What exactly will we be trained on? And wdym back line 😅
PercyGabriel1129 2 points 11m ago
It depends on which level of pod you are placed in. But more than likely, the 4 modules you'll go over is hot bar, cold bar, customer service, and de-escalation.
Poyal_Rines 3 points 11m ago
It's boring stuff we already knew.
Affectionate_Fart 3 points 11m ago
My store is closing, cafe only.
And then there’s a make up to where you can go to another store for trainings.

Is everyone supposed to do it? Because only a few in the store are in groups. But I'm a newly barista trainer. I took the survey a few weeks ago, all of us did. One of the longest standing barista trainers showed me her answers they were a lot less confident in their ability than I and I know I'm not an expert so I'm left confused why people are in group and instead of asking fellow barista what they are doing I'm looking on reddit for answers after seeing a note about barista craft training scheduling and assuming it's the same thing lol

My store is closing 4 hours only and we’ll be doing it then. It’s basically a re-training to improve the quality of our drinks
