Do you accept big bills when it's a lot of change? I don't and don't feel bad about it
sizzledelbows11 points11m ago
... Man, the amount of people who would come in to pay for just one drink with a $100 dollar bill. 😫

“can i get a tall drip coffee”
*pays with a $100 bill*

🥲

So my rationale: If it’s 50-100 dollar bills and the orders like 5-10 dollars, I don’t. If the total is like less than $20 in change I will. But I do this sparingly because I do not have a pen to check authenticity of bills.

if we have enough bills i will. we usually get a lot of $20 bills by the end of peak so i don’t mind it

Corporate or licensed store? Corporate policy is to lock away the bills larger than $10 in drop boxes that only the shifts/SM can access, and only for cash management reasons. It’s a cash violation to open it to make change for customers, they could get into serious trouble for it.
highspeed061 points11m ago
really?? that’s exactly what we do at our store, a shift will open the box to take 100s…
Dietdoctorgender2 points11m ago
The point of the drop box is to prevent potential robbers from getting the big bills. You’re also not allowed to make change for the customers from the tips.
RyusuiJL2 points11m ago
Also, baristas are supposed to be discreet when asking for change for their drawers. It should not be made apparent to customers who the keyholder at a store is. Also for safety reasons. But yes, the dropboxes should not be opened to make change for individual transactions. The customer just gets whatever 10s, 5s, and 1s you have on hand.
highspeed061 points11m ago
yeah that all makes sense (although, can’t a robber just, take the box?)
i just mean when we get a 100 we ask a shift to come check it and open the box to give change in 20s, then the 100 goes into the box. i figured the reason for that was also so baristas can’t take large bills, and people trained to recognize fakes have to. it’s weird because both my managers have done that exact thing when asked.
is this perhaps a regional thing? do you work in a high crime rate area? I work in a corporate store.
dnims243 points11m ago
Lately I’ve been getting a lot of people trying to give me 100 for less than 20 orders. I have gotten into the habit of telling them I don’t have change since my SM refuses to open the 20 drawer.
Dietdoctorgender2 points11m ago
That’s because it’s corporate policy, and they could get in trouble for it.
dnims241 points11m ago
Oh I never realized that. Back at my original store (couple years ago before I left and came back) my manager would open it for me to give change for bigger bills. It was definitely more rare and it was just a cafe store too.

Nothing above 20 for my store, not enough cash in the register plus more likely to be a fake
