how to upsell or suggest products?(self.starbucksbaristas)

How to upsell products without feeling like I'm forcing it on customers?
We are trying to push soon to be expired products (September), like sandwiches and pastries and are a medium pace licensed store.

When on DT you could always suggest things at the beginning or end of the order, something like this:
"Welcome to Starbucks! Would you like to try (item) today?"
Or if someone seems indecisive, recommend what you guys are trying to sell! :)

Immediately thought of this right after I posted my comment:
You could use the community board, an empty A-frame or any sort of chalk board surface to advertise as well! We did one for Christmas last year that advertised some of the lesser known Christmas drinks

Awesome! We definitely put one up today for a honey oat latte and it seems to be working. We are trying to get the buy a pastry/sandwich with a grande/venti drink for a $1 off going again, but it's a mouthful at the till. Might try and put up a slightly more visible sign than the one they sent us

Thank you! We are just in a little store kiosk. This is helpful.

Ask if they need anything to eat with their drink.. Sometimes they are on the cusp of ordering, or forgot to grab breakfast but aren't awake or focused pre-caffeine, it's a helpful suggestion. Usually they will take a look at the food case when you ask that.
Also, are you allowed to sample expiring stuff out? People go crazy for samples, leavea a good impression. And some love them and end up buying them next visit, when they never would have otherwise.

Yes, we definitely sample things. Usually products that come in 2-3 packs like the muffins, oat bars and brownies. Even mini drink samples are great too.
It's a main priority to be able to sell food more than our drinks, we are only pulling one of each product right now because we are selling so little. The owner wants us to be selling at least one to two of each item before they expire after thaw.
Edit: anything to eat with your drink. So simple yet effective. One of my coworkers is super shy about upselling, this is perfect for them.

“hi thank you for choosing starbucks, do you wanna try our [new drink/drink of the day/promo drink]?”
“alright and did you wanna do any pastries today? [such and such pastry] pairs really well with [such and such drink]!”
“and did you wanna add on [item] today? we’re doing it for [discount if on promo]!”

"...any other food or drink we can get started for you?"
My go-to line instead of "what else...?"

This is easier for core stores that do coffee tastings, but could work for licensed stores too. Get comfortable enough in your coffee knowledge to recommend food to pair. Like cold brew with petite vanilla bean scones or chocolate brownies with blonde roast. Really though the biggest thing is just to be sure to ask. A lot of people already say something like "anything else", which could easily switch to a more specific "thinking about any food with that?" or something more direct.
