anyone else have that coworker who refuses to do a certain position? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by canidieyet_
straight up, if you tell him to go to drive thru he’ll cry on command. quite literally, the second a shift says “take solo drive/window/dto” tears immediately roll down his face. the second you remove him from DT he’s perfectly fine. and then he’ll brag about it later while smirking. i solo drive often, i understand it’s very very overwhelming. but the fact that he refuses to even try has made it that everyone else is spending 3/4 of their shift soloing DT. i just feel like it’s unfair. he also complains about every. single. position. except bar, and then goes on and on and on about how he was hired to make coffee and “not be a maid”.
Longjumping_Stick_56 214 points 11m ago
i don’t think he’s the right fit for starbucks.
canidieyet_ [OP] 119 points 11m ago
everyyy day he explains to us why starbucks is SUCH an awful company to work for……which i get but jfc we all wish he would save us all the migraine and quit 🙃 not to mention if you don’t immediately agree with each thing he says he’ll literally pour and be like “i guess i’ll just go home since everyone hates me and i’m a burden” 😃

he’s more exhausting than rude customers.
monzoink 56 points 11m ago
Omg I hate people who pull the “everyone hates me” card. Just fucking attention whores that piss me off so much
canidieyet_ [OP] 40 points 11m ago
he’ll say it like 5x in a row too, progressively louder each time….he wants people to turn around and say “noooo don’t say that!!! we LOVE you 🥺” but we don’t lmao
monzoink 29 points 11m ago
I think you should definitely put him on solo drive for the entire day. Even if he cries be like “this is a standard job duty at Starbucks, so you need to be able to do it”
monzoink 11 points 11m ago
Jfc that’s so annoying. We had someone at my store that wasn’t the exact same but another attention whore who would just turn on their headsets inside channel and be making random sounds (think “boop beep boop”) THE ENTIRE DAY! So then my SM had to change every headset to where you had to hold the button the whole time you were talking BECAUSE OF ONE PERSON. Goddammit some people are so annoying
uwumoment 19 points 11m ago
the positions at starbucks aren’t all making coffee, and being a barista at starbucks makes you responsible for all of those positions at least once in your time there. i think they need to look for a different job 🫣 even when i was a barista at a normal coffee shop, i was also stationed on register itself, not the espresso machine, and i also cleaned the entire store, so does that make me a maid? i was a barista so… yea
canidieyet_ [OP] 11 points 11m ago
he talks about how pointless the sbux job is when he has a teaching degree…and it’s like, if that’s how you feel then you’re gladly welcome to go find a teaching job! we have 3 teachers at my store, i’m sure they could give him a hand 🤷‍♀️
Lightheaded_gamer 7 points 11m ago
I remembered going into Starbucks and a university with that mentality but changed my whole view point when I started. I learned a lot of the actual struggles and actual bonding with former partners (better than any other retail job I had). It’s a good thing I was never this guy coming in.

This person even tho graduated still has this immature mindset. The degree does not mean squat if you are gonna look down at others’ profession. Especially for that fact that HE TOO IS WORKING THERE. If you think that the job is a waste of your time then quit to not waste anyone else’s time.
sandycat555 2 points 11m ago
Uhhh I was a barista and have an advanced engineering degree. It’s all about the attitude. Enjoy the chance to do something different.

The only way that impacted my work, was when the mastrena repair people came, it was super hard for me to keep doing my tasks and not stare and watch them take the machine apart LOL
aee78 1 points 11m ago
I can't imagine any of them want to spend more any time around him.
aee78 11 points 11m ago
As a shift, I would tell him he's right and he can just go ahead an clock out. Cause I have more important thinks to do than hold his hand.
overturned23 7 points 11m ago
sounds like a pick me
Ordinary-Economist-7 6 points 11m ago
If you know your shifts have a hard time with him too, start collectively keeping a log of every time he has an attitude or isn't a good worker. It's really hard for managers to fire employees, especially without a case, so helping them build one is always good. Even if they can't find enough reason to fire him they can certainly start having conversations with him and suggesting that Starbucks might not be the right job for him since he can't adhere to company expectations.
canidieyet_ [OP] 2 points 11m ago
Will do!
Lightheaded_gamer 3 points 11m ago
I’d say “ok go home” but then people like that will continue…
Zealousideal-Star448 1 points 11m ago
Does your manager know? I’d bring it up as concern for his mental health. This is not ok and needs to be seen by a professional.

Or any job tbh
paolathepanda 44 points 11m ago
I have entitled newbies who literally wanna be bar every shift and refuse to be on dt (and literally every other positon) even when everyone else has had a turn except them. It irks me when the ssv just let's them and I get stuck going in dt yet again 🙃 like uhhh I wanna have my turn on my bar too smh .
canidieyet_ [OP] 14 points 11m ago
same! here lately all my 5.75 shifts are me in dt for 4 hours and then begging to be moved because it’s the only thing i’ve been doing recently. DT also makes my back hurt, so by the time my shifts gather enough sympathy to throw me somewhere else, each step i take is excruciating (but i can’t say anything because i’ll get sent right back to drive thru 🙄)

what’s worse is he isn’t even new. he’s an 8 month partner and uses that as an excuse and “doesn’t have enough dt experience” yeah bc you throw a tantrum when we give you the opportunity to learn how to do it 😭
glitterorgy 36 points 11m ago
I feel like there’s a big difference between not wanting to do a position and flat out refusing. Me personally I hate warming station but if we’re in a rush or I’m not doing anything and warming needs to be done I’m gonna do it. Also I feel like in any service job you’re trained in every position because you’re expected to work in every position at some point. It’s natural to favor some positions over others but I’m afraid you’re working with a selfish asshole.
HiiAlberta 11 points 11m ago
Bro warming is my favorite lmfao
g_pvp_3 3 points 11m ago
warming during peak is my least favorite position.
sweatshirtsweatpants 1 points 11m ago
Same !!!!!!! Warming was my fave, too !!
ValueAffectionate287 1 points 11m ago
I have two positions i would rather not be in but will be if I’m asked. Warming is simply because i have to wear a mask due to a food allergy and I’m not a fan of the misgendering i get super often on DT but will do it anyways. It’s just preference but they won’t stick me on warning unless necessary and it’s never for long.
sweatshirtsweatpants 2 points 11m ago
I wish corporate would do something about misgendering on the DT and stick up for their baristas. It’s a real problem. But they won’t bc they cater to Karens 😭.
kadulee 1 points 11m ago
this
baebaebluebird 25 points 11m ago
If he’s bragging about it later it just shows he’s being manipulative so he doesn’t have to do that job. Y’all gotta make him do it or tell your manager
canidieyet_ [OP] 7 points 11m ago
that’s what i’m saying but nobody will. i’ve mentioned it to my SM and she says she’ll talk to him
sodakinq 14 points 11m ago
I don’t like doing drive thru and the managers know it, so they usually keep me on bar or I do tasks. but I’ll do it if they ask because I’m being paid. It’s not that hard and if I need help then I let someone know.
reginaldioz 6 points 11m ago
exactly!! i really dislike drive but i’ll do it if necessary. i spent 4 hours solo drive today 😭
sweatshirtsweatpants 2 points 11m ago
😭 Hugs 🤗
Nraveles11 12 points 11m ago
See I don’t have an issue with someone refusing.

I refused doing drive thru at my last 2 jobs because my stutter was a lot more prominent and I was off of medications so I had really horrible anxiety specifically on drive because ent hearing is bad and I just have really bad issues in drive that I don’t do in person.

But the fact that he brags and smirks makes me think he doesn’t do it for an actual reason and just wants to get out of doing it
HappyMelonGirl 10 points 11m ago
Um yeah, is he bragging about being able to cry on command??
Because like if my barista broke down crying anytime they were even asked, I'd just straight up not ask them. Also, please be careful about showing this attitude towards a barista in literally any way because it is *WAY* too easy for him to turn this around on you with one call to PR. 🥲 just looking out, fam. I hate that they can just do this too.
canidieyet_ [OP] 8 points 11m ago
he is. because he’ll be perfectly fine, and the second you ask him to take over drive thru (even if he’s got another person with him) you’ve got about 5 seconds before tears are rolling down his face. okay, so he’s put somewhere else. suddenly the tears are gone and he’s back to being happy and making jokes like he wasn’t just crying.

he also mentioned once that “every time they ask me to go on drive thru i’ll cry and they won’t put me there. i’ve only had to do drive thru 2 times in the 8 months i’ve worked here!” and had a smirk on his face while talking about it. if you ask him if he does it on purpose to avoid DT, he’ll say he “can’t confirm or deny that”

(to clarify, i wasn’t the one who asked if he did it on purpose—another coworker did and was like 😮)
Pippy575 2 points 11m ago
If that’s the case he can either get over it or go home. Maybe once he’s losing money and hours from his theatrics he’ll either suck it up or quit.
canidieyet_ [OP] 1 points 11m ago
well as of now he’s choosing to suck it up lmao
HappyMelonGirl 2 points 11m ago
Literally omg I hate that, I had a similar thing happen around a year ago it was AWFUL. I literally had to straight up let them basically sit there and do nothing but play on their phone in the back office (they were an ssv) because they befriended the manager (the manager (F) was 20. The girl was 20. They would get drunk together and come in late hungover and stuff and I'd get in trouble if I upset this girl or annoyed her in any way AT ALL. Manager was also banging a different 20 year old barista so it would be my words against theirs because everyone else already quit. THAT'S WHY I'M WARNING YOU lmao 😭
HappyMelonGirl 1 points 11m ago
Like, NIGHTMARE level. Literally just tiktoking, while getting high, IN THE STORE For hours. Sometimes she'd use her family life as an excuse (bad childhood, I had very similar one, it sucks) but most of the time she wouldn't make any excuse she'd just sit there.
canidieyet_ [OP] 1 points 11m ago
omfg. thankfully he isn’t THAT bad 😭 my manager is also amazing & she would blow a fuse if things ever got that bad with anyone

I can understand hating drive thru as I hate it my self but crying and refusing is not ok. starbucks is not the right fit
jeonzelink 8 points 11m ago
solo drive is easy once you get the hang of it. i can take someone’s order while taking another persons payment at the same time. in order to do that you have to be put there to get practice. he doesn’t seem like a good fit for starbucks or any place if he’s gonna cry like that.
ladysingtheblues 3 points 11m ago
Yeah I honestly prefer it cause you can't really get swamped there the way you can on bar or warming
badatlife15 2 points 11m ago
Same, plus when I solo drive I am in control of knowing what’s coming up and what I have. Depending on who’s out with me on DTO/DTR it can sometimes be more stressful. I definitely want to be supportive of green beans when they’re doing either position and I’m on the other, but then I feel like I have to constantly be watching to help them, but also sticking to what I need to do. Or if I’m on DTO and both warming and bar are asking for me to help.
ladysingtheblues 7 points 11m ago
One coworker I didn't really get along with has a huge attitude about doing anything other than bar, which she isn't good at yet. When she's on CS she has an attitude about being asked to do anything and acts like she's doing you a huge favor when she brings out new ice or whatever. I'm on DTO/DTW, another coworker is soloing bar, no one seems to be on warming so I ask her if she can grab the food that just came through and she's like "fine, even though that's not my job" like every single other person in the store knows to jump on wherever they're needed, you're not being slighted.

Also there was a guy who I feel bad for bc he was very nice but just had no idea how much work Starbucks actually is and got upset about being asked to do the drains and would cry when asked to do them afterwards. He seemed to think he was being targeted with something that "wasn't in his job description" even though drains are rotated around pretty fairly and we all do them. Aside from when we had a vindictive shift who would assign it as punishment for whoever annoyed him, but that was before this guy's time. Dude ended up getting fired bc he'd regularly show up an hour late with no call or call out sick at the last second several days in a row.
crystyleea 5 points 11m ago
i can partially understand it, but it seems that he is also being rude about it like how you said he's bragging. i feel bad because i try to avoid dto/dtr at all costs. i have generalized anxiety disorder, and most shifts, a customer in the drive thru will make me cry or cause me to have a panic attack over a mistake another barista or i made. i beg not to be put over there because i get really upset and go home crying. i'll admit i've cried before when a shift put me on dtr/dto when i was having a bad day and didn't want to face customers who would get me more worked up. if he simply refuses to do it just because he doesn't want to, i think that's a totally separate issue and ridiculous. if he's complaining about every position except bar, then he should quit. i'll admit the other positions aren't as enjoyable, but it's part of the job. even when i beg not to be dtr/dto, i still do it if they make me
kadulee 2 points 11m ago
yeah ı get this, and im sorry to hear that you go through all that. i appreciate you still working through it even though im not at ur store. there are certain positions that im just not able to do but ı put up w it because ı was just trained to do that position, especially when needed. ı really dont like the fact that afterwards he feels the need to brag and call attention to himself when it isn't necessary and only sets off his coworkers. at that point he really isn't understanding nor fit for the job.
lethargicpunk 3 points 11m ago
That’s a write up, insubordination. Literally just do your job or find another one
darkwolf523 3 points 11m ago
The more I hear about drive thru, the sadder I get for your drive thru stores :(
FearlessSentence9667 3 points 11m ago
had a coworker that would call out any day she was scheduled for window during peak (at the time we would write the plays out for the whole week, we don’t anymore, not sure why) she’s since transferred to a cafe only store and i hope she’s thriving there, but yeah, drive thru is not meant for u if u can’t make it thru two hours on the window
BookDragon1996 3 points 11m ago
Report it! Outside of training everyone should be able to do every position at some capacity. On top of the fact that they’re being manipulative definitely report it. Give your SM time to do something but after that go to the DM. I understand we all have our days but if it’s consistent it’s hurtful not just to the partners but to the store itself.
Whatever corrective action happens is on them not you!
ashley0927 3 points 11m ago
Most people don’t like drive thru especially having to solo. But at my store we will split the time evenly between partners if no one likes doing it. But to cry about it….. yikes
ConfusionDisastrous8 2 points 11m ago
With those types of partners, they can do the position or not. If they refuse, it can/becomes insubordination. Go home. I'd rather be at work with 5 partners that are happy to be there and willing to work, than have 8 on the floor that are whiny and don't want to be team players.
ThisGuyTokes420 2 points 11m ago
I love solo dt, I thrive in the chaos lol

But I hate cold bar with a passion. I got started as summer kicked off and it was always really busy at cold bar so I didn't get much training. I know how to make everything I just can't go fast yet, so I've basically let everyone know that until it slows down enough for me to actually be able to learn how to sequence with more efficiency, cold bar isn't gonna go well for me. Any time cold bar partner needs to be taken over for break, someone else takes over, and I go to their spot. It works as long as there is adequate communication.
canidieyet_ [OP] 1 points 11m ago
ooo i love cold bar ! i’ll take cb over drive any day
sh3nan1gans_ 2 points 11m ago
Solo DT is not bad! They seem like they just don’t wanna be in a planted position.
philosopher_cat_lady 2 points 11m ago
Needs to be written up
MemesandSpeech 2 points 11m ago
Honestly, this is why I get pissed off at both my shifts and partners. I have this one girl who I have opening shift and 8 out of 10 when she's on bar and I'm on register/ warming, our roles will be reserved. She will complain, make a big fuss on bar, refuse to restock, etc. And my shift will then switch us when I'm already signed on tile. It's dumb cause my shift knows she behaves like this and still puts her on bar / switches us saying she going to have a "talk with her." (B.S)

Like if you don't wanna help and complain about everything, just give up your shifts and politely LEAVE.
His-And-Hers_Gaming 2 points 11m ago
Sounds like every employee in the Vons kiosk that I worked at.
Necessary_Low939 2 points 11m ago
Cry on demand? He’s an actor. Lol
Lightheaded_gamer 2 points 11m ago
Well no one complains bar. Has the your SM spoke to him that it’s a team effort and they mainly put you in positions they see you most fitting?

Like I was not able to do trash (cuz of my condition and the location of the trash chute being really far) but I made up for it by register, bar and food (which they kept me a lot there cuz I was the fastest) and never complained.
Apprehensive-You5261 2 points 11m ago
There are a few baristas at my store that complain about being on bar for a while. So much so my SSV asked me are you ok with going back to bar or are you tired of it 😅
Lightheaded_gamer 1 points 11m ago
My SM would ask too but generally coming from the idea that at bar unfortunately you do end up dealing with customers a lot while you make their drink and that overtime can be stressful (especially if you have to remake them).

However the partners I used to work with most of the time would rather be at bar than anything else.
purseEffphony 1 points 11m ago
I have a disability and cannot DTO - not that you deserve an explaination but it becomes really overwhelming for me.

I dont complain about any other tasks I am assigned,

I DO NOT CRY ON THE JOB

I DO ADVOCATE FOR MYSELF AND REMIND SM'S OF MY DISABILITY.

I ALSO WONT HESITATE TO MAKE A FORMAL COMPLAINT IF I AM NOT RESPECTED TO CORPORATE AND TO EEOC.

IT IS CALLED A REASONABLE ACCOMODATION.
One-More-Page 1 points 11m ago
Mission and values… SM needs to promote to customer unfortunately if he can’t get an accommodation…
GinasteraBabe 1 points 11m ago
One morning person at my store refuses to do bar. He's mostly on front/warming, but in over the year he's been with the company, I've only seen him on bar once
Sure_Inevitable2222 1 points 11m ago
We have one or 2 of those
floofxs2 1 points 11m ago
Talk to your dm about it. I haven’t encountered that - we did have a couple partners who couldn’t solo bar when one machine was down (our drive bar often had issues) but is very anxiety inducing for some. I work better under pressure so I didn’t necessarily like it, but felt an adrenaline rush when it would happen and power through.
marriednight 1 points 11m ago
I have a partner like that at my store. They complain if they’re on anything other than bar, but they’re slow on bar and get defensive if anyone tries to help them.

Meanwhile, I have a perpetual sore throat because their being on bar usually means my entire shift will be solo drive and our drive thru is constantly busy.
canidieyet_ [OP] 1 points 11m ago
That’s what happens! Literally no matter how much water I drink I feel like my throat is just super dry/sore. Talking for 4+ hours consecutively is rough
-Ana-- 1 points 11m ago
I had a partner that could only do bar and put away the orders. Wouldn't do till, dto, DTW or cs. Partners that can only do one or two positions are useless to me. So one morning I wouldn't let him refuse dto/w, so he walked out on his shift 🤷🏻‍♀️
reinadelastrigoi 1 points 11m ago
Oof. He’d be not long for this world at my store. My SM and SSVs take your wants and nerds into consideration, but flat out refusing is a no go.
flamingavocados 1 points 11m ago
I think food and solo drive should be rotated often during peak, it can get overwhelming… but that’s just dramatic lmfao
No-Macaroon-4265 1 points 11m ago
Hahaha I love that out of him. If he’s bragging about it why would you care, just shove him in there and leave him.
[deleted] 1 points 11m ago

xaamanda 1 points 11m ago
we had someone do that w dishes
WingsofFlight 1 points 11m ago
Sounds like someone needs to have a word with him or say he is not a good fit. Don't take a job, if you aren't willing to fully do it. I hate POS but do it sometimes, same with warming. You just do what you have to got to do.
polarizedspaghetti 1 points 11m ago
Have you talked about this with a supervisor? This is most definitely not cool and he needs to be talked to about it
canidieyet_ [OP] 1 points 11m ago
yes, we all have. i’ve mentioned it to my SM so she is aware it’s happening, but i don’t know if any of my supervisors have said anything or if anyone else has. i honestly might sit down with my SM and talk to her again
polarizedspaghetti 2 points 11m ago
Yeah bc that’s ridiculous. That sort of attitude is definitely not something you should be dealing with and it’s obviously a missions and goals issue
