What is the standard about sleeving and stopping hot drinks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GomiStank
Our old manager told us that it wasn’t standard to sleeve or put stoppers in hot drinks, but our new manager is telling us that we have to sleeve and stop all hot drinks. Does anyone know what the standard actually is?

There’s a lot of inconsistencies with this but I believe standard is as follows:
All venti, all extra hot, and all drinks with hot water as a main or partial component and brewed coffee get sleeved.
Regular tall/grande steamed milk/alt milk/juice drinks do not get sleeved.
Short drinks always get double cupped except when kids temperature.
Stoppers are only standard when drinks are put in trays.
Sleeves and stoppers always available upon request.

Just want to add onto this for CA partners:
Stoppers are only available upon request due to the single-use plastic law. They no longer have a standard now.

And WA partners! The same is true for cold lids on cafe drinks
sarahtilton_6 points11m ago
Wait! Y'all don't get lids on cafe drinks?????? I'm in Texas so this is wild to me
Buzzyys3 points11m ago
You get lids, but straws, stoppers and plastic utensils need to be out of reach of the costumer. It's pretty annoying ngl.
nightimevil3 points11m ago
That's crazy to me, because we put lids on all of the drinks. I would love if we did that here, because I hate the dome lids.
Distinct-Apartment392 points11m ago
Yeah where I am I don’t think we’re allowed to give out drinks without lids (granted all the drinks I’ve been asked for no lid are hot and it’s been a few months since I worked for sbux)

In NYC we haven't had stoppers at all for a while now due to reducing single-use plastic
dahmerpalms7 points11m ago
This is the correct answer
dregonzz6 points11m ago
This is the way

this!

I was told recently that they removed the double cup short cup rule as well. (I’m in CA)
Imaginarybluntallday1 points11m ago
I believe this came in the beginning of the year, if not always. my store at least never doubles short cups unless it’s a drink that would need a sleeve according to above, or if requested.
Apprehensive-You52611 points11m ago
I’m in IL and we still double cup the short cups and the hot teas
Big_Pension_11 points11m ago
From what I remember you only need to double cup short drinks if they have hot water in them(so teas, brewed coffee, etc) or extra hot! I work at a licensed location though but i believe it’s the same
yungfroggie47 points11m ago
if it has hot shit in it it’s gets a sleeve. idc what the standard is, it’s basic safety
pnktrd175 points11m ago
plus, the customer is going to ask for it anyway. if it’s too hot for me I’m not going to give it to someone else w/o a sleeve unless my SM is right next to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Distinct-Apartment395 points11m ago
Nah even if my store manager was next to me, If it’s too hot for ME to hold how tf do you expect me to fully prepare/hand off the drink? I’d sleeve it for my own comfort if nothing else
Sure_Inevitable22226 points11m ago
Does anyone else find it weird that starbucks does all this to reduce plastic waste and yet out milk jugs just go in the trash? To me this would be an obvious thing to recycle ??? Why don’t they recycle them ?
Acrobatic_Edge19962 points11m ago
It can be difficult to recycle milk bottles in certain areas
HappyJos6 points11m ago
When we run out 😝
r_b-uebinger1 points11m ago
We always just double cupped it when that happened, it was such a problem that I would forget to use the sleeves when we DID have them lol
Lanky-You-28195 points11m ago
pretty sure the standard is to always sleeve hot drinks as it’s a liability thing. but as for the stoppers you’re supposed to let the costumer ask for them and not automatically give it or offer since corporate wants to be more “environmentally “
Sure_Inevitable22224 points11m ago
Tall and grande hot drinks no sleeves unless requested venti automatically come with sleeves and stoppers are upon request. At least that’s how it is at my store
temporarymaintanence3 points11m ago
idk why ppl are saying not to sleeve hot talls and grandes.
at my store (and i believe in my training 2 years ago too), we sleeve all tall/grande/venti hot drinks and double cup shorts/ any drink with hot water (hot water drinks get both double cupped and sleeved). Stoppers we put in all mobile hot drinks, drinks going in trays, and by request
Sunny-Capriccio4 points11m ago
I was trained a year and a half ago but i’m pretty sure the standard change happened around last fall to be both more environmentally friendly and to mitigate the supply shortages of everything in every store. I was trained to sleeve everything, and everyone sleeved everything after I transferred stores last fall, but a few weeks in we were specifically told to change our sleeving and double cupping standards and none of us liked it
DingleberriesInMyBut2 points11m ago
Edit: spelling
Idc what the standard is for sleeves, I ALWAYS put them. I went to one of my local stores when it was still cold out and got a venti extra hot pwm and they didn’t put a sleeve on it and I damn near dropped it bc it was so hot to touch 😭
awkward_cat_man_1 points11m ago
At my store we stop all hot drinks and sleeve venti size
Apprehensive-You52611 points11m ago
The store I work at I was taught to sleeve all hot drinks and double cup the short and hot teas and ask if they want a stopper unless it’s mobile then it automatically gets a stopper. Im in IL btw, idk if that makes a difference but yeah not sure if this is true for all IL stores but it is for the one I work at!
r_b-uebinger1 points11m ago
*Also double cup any extra hot drinks, or if your hot water is over a certain temperature (which can be different between different stores)
floofxs21 points11m ago
I was told sleeves on venti hot cups, sleeves on all drinks made with hot water and extra hot, (short size hot water + xhot drinks double cup)… I was never told stoppers were standard except for deliveries.
CriticalSheep1 points11m ago
Up until last year, the standard was to sleeve venti hot drinks and all teas and americanos. Everything else doesn't get a sleeve. Stoppers are only on request as far as I'm aware.
Bottle_Silver0 points11m ago
For me it’s like this For any short drink or anything with Hot water subbing milk, will get sleeved (tall, grande, venti) and double cupped, this includes short. Everything else with milk as the main component will get 1 cup and 1 sleeve.
Necessary_Low9390 points11m ago
U guys have stoppers?!
Bar area: If it’s mobile, u should provide a sleeve or sleeve the drink and there’s no more stoppers or stickers at my store so we don’t stopper it. But if ur store has it, stopper it.
If it’s a cafe order, u can provide a sleeve or sleeve it, stoppers not needed unless they want one. If it’s a cold drink, u should ask if they want a straw etc.
If ure doing hot coffee, hot teas— always sleeve the drinks
Avoni_C-8 points11m ago
ALL hot drinks get sleeves. ALL hot drinks with HOT WATER get double cupped and sleeves. Stoppers I've been taught are technically standard but no one wants them so I only put it on if the customer wants. I ask them "would you like a stopper in your drink?" And 90% of the time they say no. But if they say yes? Stopper it is.
