This week on: things that should get my store shut down (i.redd.it)

So…your store doesn’t do any cleaning other than clean play?
GhostofXmasWayFuture 61 points 11m ago
Not the OP but in the 10 months I worked there, my store had maggots twice (that I know of), despite being really strict about cleaning and weekly clean play 🤢
zedazeni 64 points 11m ago
Maggots don’t come out of nowhere. It takes time for the flies to lay their eggs and those eggs to hatch (typically around 3-4 days between when eggs are laid to when the pupae turn into adult flies). So for 3-4 days, no one was cleaning where those maggots were found (at least very well). I will say that it depends on where they’re at too. Plus once you have a fly problem at Sbux it’s incredibly difficult to get rid of them.

👋 I'm OP.

So unfortunately the maggots are in the mats, and I suspect also the dirty rags we bag while still wet.

I work with taxidermy as a hobby, and I've recommended to my boss to use white vinegar to create a too acidic environment for the flies & eggs to survive. I also know what maggots smell like, so that's why I suspect the rags are culprit, too (a weird Venn Diagram of a personality to be a coffee barista and work with dead things, lol)

I used bleach spray and boiling water since that was what was available at my disposal

We have a scrub brush type of broom, like a push broom, to clean the mats. Unfortunately, most baristas only mop the mats and return them while floor and mats are still wet. Furthermore, what I found was using the broom seems to push the maggots further into the mats.

We previously had a power washer, but who knows where it is now
I know one shift has been asking our boss to please buy even a $15 hose so we can forcefully spray down the mats

we got them inside of hollow shelves that i didnt even know were hollow + came apart. apparently theyre a clean play task (i dont work on those days) and get done weekly but yeah
BatWeary 10 points 11m ago
my old store had them on the top of the cabinets. not entirely sure if that’s a clean play task (i don’t work clean plays) but my DM was the one to find them. we had closed for 3 days and scrubbed the store top to bottom—we found a damn receipt from 2016!!!! he was there with us every second of the process

Y'all we had a fruit fly problem we COULD NOT HANDLE. We gassed the joint 3 times and they'd keep coming back for more.
_lanalana_ 35 points 11m ago
When i first started at the bux our manager “accidentally” threw away the saran wrap and “accidentally” forgot to order more for 3-4 months and we had fruit flies literally laying eggs in the malt powder for weeks bc we had no way to cover it
Longjumping_Stick_56 32 points 11m ago
please tell me you didn’t serve malt powder
_lanalana_ 19 points 11m ago
We had to dump it at least once a day but our manager wouldn’t let us just not serve it at all. That starbucks was super poorly run and absolutely disgusting and did a ton of things that were super sketchy tbh
falselycathartic 15 points 11m ago
i use the malt powder for fruit fly traps they love that shit so much it’s disgusting
Longjumping_Stick_56 9 points 11m ago
oh thank god, so did you guys just not have malt powder for months??
BatWeary 24 points 11m ago
my old store was INFESTED with wasps. it got so bad we had to close for a day so they could come spray. we found 150 something dead wasps the next morning. it didn’t completely take away the issue but we went from catching 20+ a day to 1-5. no clue where the hell they were coming from as someone who is terrified of any bees or wasps, going into work was stressful.

however, we called orkin so much that we’re known as the “bee store” apparently 😭 (dude recognized me and my coworkers at the store we transferred to recently—he said he recognized us from the bee store LMFAO)

Under all of our counters we have black mold 🤷🏻‍♀️ the one clean play I did we only focused on the bathrooms and sinks (yes we used the toilet cleaner and toilet brushes to clean the sinks (no we didn't have seperate toilet brushes at the time))
BatWeary 10 points 11m ago
BLACK MOLD??? that’s so dangerous wtaf
falselycathartic 14 points 11m ago
my store has had fruit flies for literally the entire year and we haven’t been able to get rid of them whatsoever; it’s awful… maggots are a whole other level though oh my god
wintercamryn [OP] 4 points 11m ago
I had a lightbulb Ah-Ha! thinking moment the first time we found maggots 3 weeks ago...

A fly problem means you have a maggot problem

That's because the flies are seriously likely to be laying eggs that hatch into maggots, continuing the cycle of "we have a fly problem"
BananaGrams3 12 points 11m ago
My old DM made me open on time even though I couldn’t catch a mouse that was running all over the hot and cold bar
wintercamryn [OP] 1 points 11m ago
AHHHHHH 😳
spookysznneverends 9 points 11m ago
One of our sinks in bar grows mushrooms overnight sometimes.
The_Septic_Shock 9 points 11m ago
This isnt only sbux. I worked at a local shop and I tried to get management to do something multiple times about an ant problem. Took like a month before they called someone. Restaurants everywhere are just gross. Don't know how health inspectors pass these places
batbrain666 9 points 11m ago
where were they?!
dlcksuck 7 points 11m ago
My store has an on and off reoccurring roach problem :)
baebaebluebird 6 points 11m ago
Fruit fly problem at my store was solved by doing a proper cleaning of the drains
triscuits36 1 points 11m ago
We always tried to clean the drains well every chance we could, not even just in clean play days. We were never able to fully get rid of the fruit flies :(
happysloth4 6 points 11m ago
I’ve heard of so many people finding maggots and I cannot fathom that happening for real I mean my old store had flies galore and it was not very clean(because I was the only one who cleaned properly) but we never had maggots
ThankfulWonderful 2 points 11m ago
Sounds like you just never found the maggot mother lode…. Those flies were coming from somewhere unknown. Breeding in a wet dark spot in the store no one looked at. Bleh

Good job trying your best though !
happysloth4 1 points 11m ago
Should’ve specified we had fruit flies not regular flies and my store wasn’t big, it wasn’t an infestation which means there wouldn’t be maggots. Likely they just liked the moisture and kept coming back but they would go away for a bit and come back. Trust me though a fruit fly infestation usually requires something rotting and like I said the store wasn’t big and I cleaned it correctly. Also the entire store and all equipment was deeply sanitized over the winter because of covid which meant moving all machines and I don’t think the state health department is going to miss maggots if they were in the store.

Good job sounding passive aggressive though!
ThankfulWonderful 1 points 11m ago
Im sorry if it came off passive aggressive- I am genuinely glad that you did all of that stuff and were trying your best.

The flies came from somewhere - fruit fly larva look like tiny maggots. Just because no one saw where they were breeding - doesn’t mean they were coming from thin air…. It could’ve been a small hole in the wall behind the ice machine or something so out of sight no one could find it even if they tried.
lilkiosk 5 points 11m ago
My store cleaned so regularly and even did clean play tasks multiple times a week. The flies would never leave. 2 years of flies. And the exterminator did nothing :(
dnims24 4 points 11m ago
Lately some of my partners have been leaving the drive thru window open which is causing flies and knats to fly in
No-Chocolate-6828 4 points 11m ago
LMAO 🤣
LovelyLatte 3 points 11m ago
I should not be reading this thread bc I have entomophobia😭😭 but I’ve been seeing flies in my store and it has me hella stressed
SchwiftedMetal 3 points 11m ago

Lettuce_Boy11 2 points 11m ago

Malachite_Migranes 2 points 11m ago

dessunflower 1 points 10m ago

circulatorysystemm 1 points 11m ago
this post/comments make me feel less alone. i was working a cp and felt something crawling on my arm, look down to see a maggot, my eyes kept adjusting and focusing, i start to see them EVERYWHERE by our mobile bar sink. it took my manager 6 months to fix it.
