$19 an hour to run a shitshow (self.starbucksbaristas)

New to being a shift and I got another 3 person peak on a Friday morning. That is all. Thank you.
wifeypoopoo [OP] 83 points 11m ago
I opened with one other person. We didn’t have time to set up the pastry case. Got one other person at 5 but she is new and doesn’t know how to bar. I had to leave them to do an order. It was the thee of us for peak today. Absolutely not!
Didn’t get to take my lunch. Had to stay an extra 45 minutes to do my pull when my mid shift came in

A ton of stores (including mine) are cutting hours. Although our store also just extended our opening time 🙃. Doesn’t make sense does it
wifeypoopoo [OP] 12 points 11m ago
We definitely don’t have cut hours. Just not enough people right now. A lot of good partners left around the same time
Thomastheshankengine 15 points 11m ago
I’m a former partner but me and another former partner talked about it and he said this:

Starbucks as a system can work really really well If there’s enough people who can do their fill each role at a bare minimum. The problem is that they’re trying to squeeze blood out of a stone by understaffing at every single opportunity without any regard for partners as **people.** That really stuck with me.
Flowerfuls 5 points 11m ago
They cut our opening by half an hour and now we’re not able to finish in time before the rush comes. Because school started this week so ofc now we get busy earlier 😭
HappyBarista 5 points 11m ago
I feel your pain!!

How much does your store do in a day? And what are your half hours during peak?
caritaspoet 1 points 11m ago
I left a year ago and this was the norm, almost daily. (Partner for six years, but the last was certainly the worst). There's not enough money in the world to be a shift and get destroyed every day. There's just not. My baristas for sure did not deserve that either.
Ghirahim016 13 points 11m ago
I had the same thing today!!
Nothing worse than getting in at 8:15 thinking you leave at 12:30 only realizing you’re actually leaving at 2!🥲🥲
Thomastheshankengine 7 points 11m ago
If you’re scheduled for 12:30 then leave at 12:30. It sucks to leave your coworkers in a bind but this company will do nothing for you for your suffering and exhaustion both before and after you leave. Sticking your neck out won’t change the system and stuff like this is why it’s so goddamn important that we continue to unionize.
Ghirahim016 0 points 11m ago
I wasn’t scheduled to leave for 12:30, I was scheduled until 2, I just thought I was leaving earlier than I was which just plain sucks
katsandboobs 10 points 11m ago
I lasted for three months having that shit happen 3/4 times a week. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore and walked out. I can understand once or twice, but when the SM knows it’s happening and doesn’t give any fucks….then it’s byeeeeee.

My closes are extremely short staffed, so we usually have to leave later than the scheduled 30 minutes after close. I'm fine with that, my closers never complain and we all try to have fun while doing our jobs because the business hours were stressful and without breaks and we've all grown pretty close. The problem is, my store manager always coaches me on time management (btw it's rarely anything crazy, mostly 10-15 minutes past our scheduled time). My main issue is that we have the people that have the availability, they are just never scheduled, yet openings and mids are usually fully staffed. On top of little unavoidable things that prevent from tasks, we simply don't have enough people to run the floor and do most of the closing tasks before. I tried just leaving exactly at 9:30, doing only the essential tasks first and as early as possible and little ones when we had a chance (like she suggested to me). The next day I work, I'm coached for not doing exactly everything, even though we did all of the essentials. She knows we're busy at night, but we get no one. Meanwhile, mornings and mids have so many partners that a lot of the time they are left in a "We did everything we can possibly think of, what's left to do?"

Sorry for the kinda long rant, it's been a rough time at starbies. Sometimes I miss being a clueless green bean 😅

Your manager should run a couple of night shifts so they can understand better. I hate it when someone doesn’t know what you’re going through but they want to tell you how to do it better.
r_b-uebinger 3 points 11m ago
I don't expect that happening anytime remotely soon
Electrical_Metal_106 1 points 11m ago
True-I like to live in a fantasy world. 😂

Oof I’m sorry to hear this is happening to other people 😭 I walked in the other day right as peak was ending to a few fellow baristas close to tears because they ran a four person play all morning. At a drive thru store that regularly does $50k a week
Thomastheshankengine 2 points 11m ago
Jesus my old store did about $6-8k a day and it was fucking agonizing. I was basically a drive thru solo slave and I was on the verge of bursting a blood vessel on the weekends.
Abject_Compote_1436 1 points 11m ago
It’s not fun at all. They’re setting us up for failure and they literally do not fucking care. Who the hell schedules a 4 person play for peak???
grlcbr8th 5 points 11m ago
Ugh I can’t wait to step down lol
chateauduchat 3 points 11m ago
You’re getting $19?! We’re still at $15 bc Starbucks thought they could break the law and delay our raise even though we’re unionized but we waived our rights to bargain over the August 1st raise. This job is shit.
yvesnings 3 points 11m ago
Seeing these posts truly remind me of how lucky I am to have an amazing manager who cares about his baristas and SSVs. Half of my team is out for COVID and my manager told us to be drive thru only. You guys are AWESOME and I’m proud of your hard work. Please don’t forget to rest and eat well. Thank you for being there for your baristas. 🥺🫶💗

Four part at a drive thru cafe store, and only green beans for weekend mids have been so pleasant lately🙃. And I’m talking about like 2 weeks off training.
Karona24 2 points 11m ago
My hours were cut to one or two shifts a week & had to get 2nd job
chateauduchat 2 points 11m ago
Under the NLRB, that can be illegal for them to do that. I would discuss with your other partners what their situation was and availability as well as contact NLRB or Workers United.
Karona24 1 points 9m ago
That is what my manager told me only guarantees 1 to 2 shifts a week
iqueefkief 2 points 11m ago
i’m sorry - that’s fucked. did someone call out, or is labor that tight?
wifeypoopoo [OP] 8 points 11m ago
We had a bunch of partners quit around the same time.
iqueefkief 3 points 11m ago
that’s happened to my store as well, but my store manager has been taking a lot of the shifts himself. lots of younger partners out for the school year.

wouldn’t it be logical if the money saved in labor was given to the baristas who worked that day? you know, since they are expected to do the labor of 3 others.

exploitation at its finest
