16 working alone (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Feeling_Town_4836
hey everyone, so this has been on my mind for sometime! i am 16 and work at a starbucks located in a grocery store. there are days i come in and work 8 hours…by myself which means no breaks. is this something i should inquire about? or do i need to suck it up?

thanks!

This is illegal. You are absolutely required to have breaks . Also look into your state labor laws for minors. Bc they are even stricter about breaks for minors.
echowolf9 17 points 11m ago
It’s honestly awful, but depending on the state it’s not illegal. $1 and $1. Arizona is an example of a state that does not require breaks of any kind for minors.
SKSM10 56 points 11m ago
Sounds like you might have to look in to that & talk to the manager of the grocery store. Almost everything you just said is out right illegal when regarding labor laws especially since you’re still under the age of 18.

That’s worrisome & dumb they don’t have a second or even third person to help you or just have someone watch the kiosk or section so you can have some kind of break
Ordinary-Theory-8289 3 points 11m ago
Labor laws vary state to state. This wouldn’t be illegal everywhere
WillingnessGreedy185 32 points 11m ago
In my state, it’s illegal for a minor to work 5 hrs without a 30 minute break. You should be at least getting that and another 10. It’s against the law and it’s your right to have breaks!
wobbysobby 14 points 11m ago
The legality of this is VERY dependent on which state you live in (assuming you live in the states).
Ok-Start-6768 12 points 11m ago
While it’s legal for you to be there by yourself because that Starbucks is owned by Kroger so technically adult coworkers are there, you still need a break or shorter shift legally. I’d wait and gather as much evidence as possible (time sheets) and then report it

What state are you in?
Feeling_Town_4836 [OP] 1 points 10m ago
Maryland!
BlackberryOpposite31 1 points 10m ago
According to the Maryland Department of Labor minors who are 16-17 “may not be permitted to work more than 5 consecutive hours without a non-working period of at least 30 minutes”. So yeah you should be getting a 30 minute break for anything over 5 hours.
Necessary_Low939 4 points 11m ago
Damn wtf. Report it, then take a bunch of shit home because u deserve them
Keyndoriel 3 points 11m ago
Ooo neat sounds like you can sue someone! In all seriousness this is horrible. Document the fact you arent getting breaks while youre stuck there but try to get into an actual starbucks. It isnt a dream by a lomg shot, but its better.
Intelligent-Ad1273 3 points 11m ago
It depends on the state. I know Alabama doesn’t require breaks for 16+ but you have time limits while public school is in session. There should be a sign in the back/break area where it details certain rules regarding minors working or you can google it
csophb 3 points 11m ago
As a minor you shouldn’t work 4 hours or more with getting a 30 minute break that you clock out for. Normally minors at my store get scheduled 3.75 hrs and get a 10 min break on the clock but if they are scheduled for a longer shift they absolutely need a thirty minute break.
Idk about licensed but for corporate, the store will get fined quite a bit of money if a minor goes without the appropriate break.
Report this! I’m sorry they aren’t doing what they should do to ensure you get your breaks 😞
ontether 3 points 11m ago
My state is under 18 cannot work more than five hours without a break and never over 8 hours a day
RayBun4 3 points 11m ago
Definitely illegal, my store won't let the schedule be posted if a minor is working more than 4 or 5 hours without a lunch break. Start going higher up, talk to one of the office managers or store managers.
Razza_ma_tazza 2 points 11m ago
Had the same this happen. Kiosk was to be run with 8 people and we had 5. Ended up leaving bc it was too much without breaks and going up to 12 hours a day daily. Protect yourself. Other places will pay with better conditions.
krty98 2 points 11m ago
I worked for a Kroger Starbucks before I went to corporate. Per Kroger policy, you are entitled to a break. Fuck the stand for your breaks. All of them. Take both your 15s and your 30s and close the stand. That job is not worth it. I’d love it if you burned it down and sent me a video.
awkward_cat_man_ 2 points 11m ago
You get 15s?! We only get 10s lucky lucky
krty98 2 points 11m ago
When I worked at Kroger, yes. You’d get 15s. But I work at corporate now and it’s 10s.

your required. Talk with your stores PIC and they will either take over or have you put up a sign stating your on break (I too work in a grocery store and work by myself for long shifts). Either the mid was suppose to give you a break or you just take one.

suggest working something with your manager about break times
Nova0905 2 points 11m ago
I’m 16 as well, at my store I am the first one to have a break whenever I work early, I am also only strictly allowed to work 40-48 hours in 2 weeks. You’re supposed to have a 10 or 15 depending where you are every 2 hours or so.
nicolelynnejones 2 points 11m ago
I’d inquire with the grocery store. it’s shocking the amount of retailers who just casually break the law on a daily basis. When I worked at Claires/Icing we worked alone most days and the next person would come in like 30 mins before we left for the day. We couldn’t close the store to take a break. Same thing happened when i worked at Sally Beauty
vanilllacakez 2 points 11m ago
Nope. Unacceptable. You’re allowed to take breaks. I hate places that think you should just suck it up. Absolutely not.
ashley0927 2 points 11m ago
Yeah I went through the same thing back when I worked at Tarbucks (now working at corporate) I would either get my breaks skipped or wait till someone from guest services covered me. It sucks working alone, I recommend you leaving and applying to a corporate store.
albinopigsfromspace 2 points 11m ago
Breaks are required especially for minors. This is definitely something you should talk to someone about
EliMinivan 2 points 11m ago
I'm 19 working in a Safeway bux. I work 5.75 hour closing shifts 230-815 alone which means no lunch and often during the summer, no breaks either. It sucks ass. My Starbucks is the closest to the local beach, and the one nearest to us often closes early due to under staffing, which means we get insanely busy with beach traffic and group orders in the summer. If you are unionized, definitely contact your representative and have them help you work things out.

Wasn’t expecting so much feedback!! Thank you to everyone that commented❤️, I love that this group is so supportive! I will post a update if anything else happens. I need to see how to go about this. Also I work in Maryland, if anyone was wondering about the laws! Th am you again❤️❤️
