anyone willing to share their experience of ASU? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by oringrey
Being able to go back to school was honestlylike 75% of the reason I wanted to work at Starbucks but I've heard some mixed things about ASU's online classes.
Would anyone be willing to tell me what they thought?

edit: for specificity, if it matters, I'm thinking about anthropology, sociology, or forensic science (I know, kinda all over the place lol)

id say free education is always worth getting into in the long run. i’ve been taking my prerequisites at ASU for a program that i wanna do at a local university and just transferring them over!! just so u know tho u do have to claim that on ur taxes. but the quality of the education is pretty good id say and the success coaches are very helpful and i like that u can go at ur own pace rather than worry about doing school full time to get financial aid

that's a good point! free education is still free!

I was going to start ASU but didn’t go through with it for my own personal reasons. I was going to pursue graphic design as my major. Although, the enrollment coach told me I would have to maintain a 3.0 GPA. Take more classes a quarter than the recommendation which I believe the recommendation is 1 class per quarter. At the time I was working only 14 hours a week despite constantly telling my manager I need to work a minimum of 20 hours a week to be able to qualify for ASU. I have ADHD and barely know how to manage my symptoms so taking more than one class per quarter and trying to maintain a 3.0 GPA was not going to be possible for me all while working and dealing with other personal things. I’m also currently pregnant and set to have my daughter early next year. Which means I won’t be able to attend an entire semester or so and even if I was able to attend the spring semester I wouldn’t be able to manage more than 1 class per quarter (maybe more than one class a semester I would be able to do it) while taking care of my daughter and going to work.

Lesson here is make sure you find out whether you have to take more than one class per quarter and if you have to maintain a certain GPA for your major. Then decide whether that major is right for you or not. Make sure your manager is giving you at least 20 hours per week so that you qualify for ASU. When you meet with your enrollment coach ask them these things and any other questions and concerns you might have about whichever major you decide to pursue. Good luck!

So I’m in the middle of my Econ degree with them.
I’m not super impressed, some classes have been great while others have been lacking.
Just did a 300 level Public health course that used references from 1986 as the “most reliable information”…half assed everything, finished two weeks early and got full marks. At the end of the day, it’s a degree and no one really cares so long as you have a great GPA and that piece of paper.

Perk of everything is, they’ve paid ~15k for classes and I’ll only pay about 300 in income taxes.

this is kinda what I've been hearing, as well - like you'll get a degree but you might not actually learn much which made me a little wary because I do wanna actually learn things lol

I’m the same way, but I’ve learned the hard way that education is a fallacy. Lol. Went to comm college and had an amazing experience up until my nursing program and that whole fiasco was toxic and horrible…and sadly I didn’t know any better.
I don’t mind ASU its comparable to many college experiences nowadays. I’m honestly just wanting the degree at this point because that’s what gets you a job.

I've taken Sociology and Anthropology classes as electives (definitely not a major) but I loved them. I really enjoy ASU thus far. Anywhere you go is going to have a mixed bag of professors, but fully utilize the ratemyprofessor and you'll have a good grasp of what you're getting into.

Overall, I find the format pretty intuitive, and aside from the weirdness of professors not always having their own course videos (petty complaint but ???? c'mon why LOL), I have yet to have any egregious complaints. It's for sure one of the best benefits Starbucks has to offer so I fully encourage everyone to go for it.

When there are resources out there to find the books for free, why not?

Started at ASU before starting at Starbucks 😭 but ASU has been great for me. The teachers are really good as far as I know and most of my classes have a lot of participation.

As an already existing ASU student how did it work for you to have ASU online covered? Did you have to pay for everything upfront and when were you reimbursed by SB when you were? Did you have to take a minimum credit hours or have a specific GPA?
