Manager not respecting hours(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by 222randomperson222
For background, I am a minor and was hired about 4.5 months ago. When I was hired. I explicitly told my manager I wanted to work 20 hours a week but would be willingly to work like 25 or so during summer. They said they weee fine with that so I went ahead with the job. All summer, I was scheduled around 22-24 hours which I was chill with. However, I started school two weeks ago and now all of a sudden they are scheduling me 28-30 hours with one day off a week. This happened this week and for the next two weeks on the schedule. I questioned this and they said they had no choice as they needed to the coverage. This is my senior year and I wanted some time to enjoy the year without so much stress. I just don’t understand why I am being scheduled so much when I have other coworkers who are complaining being under scheduled. I can’t quit because I really need this job but I just don’t think it is sustainable for me to work that much with all my school stuff to worry about.

Woah how weird. I’m working at most 22 hours a week when I said I could do 30. Weird how stores do that

I know. Normally from what I’ve heard and seen, it’s the opposite aka under scheduling. Even some of my own coworkers are robbed of like 10 hours a week so I don’t understand the logic of my new schedule.

I thought during school season students aren’t allowed to work more than 20 hours a week?
or does your state allow more than that?

I think my state is more lenient on student laws, it’s more about the time frame you work like you can’t work super early or super late. I just think it’s wrong because the whole reason I accepted the job was because I was under the impression they would work with my schedule. Honestly I should have looked at this subreddit earlier tho because this type of situation seems common at sbuxs from the other post I’ve seen on here.

I would still recommend doing some more research on your local labor laws, that shouldn’t be legal.

Doesn’t matter. If your in school and it’s the school year as a minor you can only work 20 hours a week. That’s a starbucks policy thing.

the same shit happened to me! are you able to change your avaliablity to have more days off? i will mention starbucks often either does all or nothjng for their employees, i had weeks where i was scheduled 30 hours and weeks where i was scheduled 7. ridiculous lol

Yea, it is weird. One week this summer I got scheduled 1 4.5 hour shift and now it’s next to 30. I’m going to talk to my manager about changing my availability next time I work I am just working up the courage to right now.

Don't even talk to them, just go into the partner app and change it so you have the days off you want. If you switch it to only having like 4 days open they prob won't be able to put you over 20-25 cause you're a minor
embrell5 points11m ago
you can do it! i know you can also change it through the app though if that option is avaliable 🤷♂️ good luck

i hate to say this but you need to just fight this like hell. if your sm won't respect your (perfectly reasonable) availability, go to your dm. starbucks gets away with exploiting people way too often - if they need the coverage, hire more people. your availability is your availability, no one should ever give you resistance on that front, especially when you're still a student and a minor.

offer your shifts on marketplace

Last time I check Starbucks went with the most strict minor labor law across the board. If you are a minor then that is absolutely illegal. If you are 18 then this is why they are getting away with it. Change your availability to exactly how you want it. Then contact your DM. You are still in school so you have some power in your corner to negotiate if need be.

Update your availability through the app

Unfortunately starbucks would rather schedule a new partner full-time and pay less money, and only have tenured partners (tenured partners get paid more) where they need them the most with minimal hours. Managers will do whatever possible to look good and have a high store profit. Remember: we are all replaceable in their eyes.
