most states. 6 hours is the sbux policy for lunches. anything less doesn’t get a lunch.
Fine_Ad185155 points11m ago
I’m in california and you have to take a lunch before your 5th hour! :O
interyx25 points11m ago
Yeah California is one of the exceptions to the rule. I've worked in VA and SC and in both you're only required to take a lunch after 6 hours.
hollsberry4 points11m ago
Cali has more strict labor laws!!!
IOnlyhave5_i_s2 points11m ago
Or voluntarily request to skip lunch if you’re working less than 6 hours. But they can’t just schedule you, it has to be a voluntary request.
If you do work a minute over 5 hours or don’t take a full consecutive 30 minutes or don’t take your 10 minute, again consecutively, you are to be paid an additional hour as a penalty to the employer. This is for California, however other states have this law as well. Random side note, many cuties and county’s in CA have higher minimum wages, anywhere from $15.96 - $23.00.
nonogender1 points11m ago
same in new hampshire
Responsible_Snow710912 points11m ago
Yepp i live in PA and we dont take a 30 unless its 6 hours or more
anxiouspeony [OP]4 points11m ago
Not to mention tho living in PA you’re lucky to even get a break to begin with considering they aren’t legally obligated to give you one at all (^:
anxiouspeony [OP]2 points11m ago
This, I worked in PA for most of my time at sbux but now I’ve moved to NY. While we do get paid more I am still very tired and would like to sit down
MrsClaireUnderwood11 points11m ago
Starbucks policy is to follow local labor laws. In some states you need a lunch by the 5th hour.
Drassazuru7 points11m ago
Can confirm, I work in Illinois, don't get one for 6 hours, all my shifts are under 6
Wspitsamanda2 points11m ago
hey i’m in illinois too :)
canidieyet_136 points11m ago
i feel like for 5.75 shifts we should at least get 2 tens. or one 15. because 10 minutes to eat, grab a drink, use the bathroom and relax?? your break is up before you do even half of that.
(which if i use the bathroom on my 10, i don’t actually count it 🤠 i’ll use it before or after my 10.)
Epona_0268 points11m ago
i don’t start counting my 10 minutes until i’m settled in comfortably somewhere with my food and beverage lmao
jeonzelink27 points11m ago
I had a ssv who used to time us the second he sent us on our break and would get mad if we ever went past his 10 min timer
depressedbarista42026 points11m ago
that’s so gross. what an abuse of power
jeonzelink10 points11m ago
yep then he became a manager at another store .. so imagine him as a manager 😅
bryceofswadia4 points11m ago
I don’t start counting it till I’m settled and remember to check my phone to see the time lol.
LovelyLatte1 points11m ago
My least favorite thing ever is when the ssv doesn’t care how long it takes one of their friends to get their complicated asf drink + food together for their ten minute, but they harass me about mine😍😍
Notsotaciturn62 points11m ago
Unpopular longtime union member opinion: hourly employee should always be paid for meal breaks that happen during their workday.
Notsotaciturn34 points11m ago
You got hungry or tired or had to pee and couldn't do it when you chose because you were working, so they should pay you to replenish. Imho.
Iamdecaptainnoww13 points11m ago
Yes! I always tell my coworkers I wait to shit until I clock in, because I’d rather be paid to do so.
Notsotaciturn6 points11m ago
Point of fact: I am a salaried teacher. However, I worked summer school where I had to clock in and out, including a 30 minute lunch. You can be sure as s*** I did not include bathroom breaks in my '30 minute clocked out' unpaid lunch. No way Jose.
Iamdecaptainnoww1 points11m ago
Hell yeah to that!
Puzzleheaded_Lie70614 points11m ago
Yup. SM tried to debate that with me once, I was courteous and would Let them know I was using the bathroom, then I was “talked to” about it. As soon as I started going to the bathroom in the middle of peak for 15 minutes, the questions stopped, and now I go before or after my breaks. 🤷🏻♀️
megs12883 points11m ago
Why don’t y’all get 15? We get 15 min breaks for 4+hour shifts and 30 min + a 15 for 6-8 hour shifts, then 8+ is one 30 and 2 15s
Urmomscoochiehairs1 points11m ago
Bruh that’s smart I go to the bathroom for my whole 10 to hit my vape 😂
Keyndoriel1 points11m ago
Our sm actually requires 2 tens for a 5.75. And our bathroom breaks dont count for 10 timer. Its great lol
ricardimus1 points11m ago
(Samesies)
rudebii60 points11m ago
I remember when my district started doing 3.75 hour shifts so those partners wouldn’t get a break at all.
canidieyet_30 points11m ago
what??? i’ve gotten scheduled for a 3.5 and still got a 10. maybe it’s just my manager being nice then because my state doesn’t require anyone over 18 to have a break period
rudebii11 points11m ago
In my state at the time, scheduled shifts under 4 hours didn’t require a break. They even did 2 hour shifts. It sucked.
Sufficient-Level-4086 points11m ago
I think you're required to be scheduled for at least three, unless it's a state thing.
depressedbarista4202 points11m ago
I had a manager who did this (not at Starbucks tho). I remember I would ask for my 10 and they would say no because my shift was too short. I was furious
awkward_cat_man_54 points11m ago
I get them all.the.damn.time. My halfs are where I go to my car and scream for 30 mins.
ocinlas42 points11m ago
I hope y’all don’t downvote me to oblivion, but I’m always surprised by these posts.
I would rather work 5.75 with a ten then 6 with a lunch. If you work 6 you get paid 5.5. If you work 5.75 you get paid for 5.75. If I have to be in the building I want paid for all my time.
Yes, 2 10s or 15 would be nice or a paid lunch but it’s not a standard option. So idk. Maybe I’m trippin?
anxiouspeony [OP]11 points11m ago
Not trippin, I just would definitely prefer a time to actually be able to sit down and relax for more than 10 minutes bc at my store you’re forced to go around and wait in line for your food and drink before you can actually go sit down. I’m not allowed to make a coffee whenever or warm something up at random to take it to the back so I also waste most of the tiny break I get in those almost 6 hours. Plus they always give me the 10 way too early.
Snarfungus6 points11m ago
that sucks :( my store allows us to get our food/drink prior to taking our break, or they’ll throw in our food as we’re leaving the floor. having to wait in line sucks when you’re only on a 10
anxiouspeony [OP]2 points11m ago
It honestly depends on which shift is working that time, I’m new to this location so I’m feeling it out still but yeah it’s very frustrating but i am glad for the overall more hours
princessbunny214 points11m ago
Speak to your SSVs/SM about implementing a task or two before sending you on your break. That way, you have time to mark out your food/drink, and you can complete a task (changing trash, restocking, dishes, replenish backups etc) while your items are being prepared. It also helps out the support person so they can stay on cycle with one less task to complete. Since we’ve started approaching breaks that way, it’s helped morale and efficiency on the floor so much. I tend to give my baristas a ten minute warning before sending them on their 10s (though tbh I’ll allow a 12 or so, I’m not super nit-picky about it as long as shit gets done) so they know to start thinking about what they want. I’ll also check in with them two hours into their 5.75 shift and ask how they’re feeling, if they want their ten right at that two hour mark or if they want to wait a little longer. As SSVs, the best thing we can do for our floors and for our baristas is making sure we’re in tune with our baristas’ needs.
Flat-Whereas30751 points11m ago
Then they should definitely give you a lunch! You are being screwed out of any of your break time because your management doesn’t want to prioritize their baristas’s break time!
What sort of moron wouldn’t want to give their staff a moment to REST?! It’s clinically proven to increase productivity and employee moral!
Sounds to me like you should switch stores, and then have a discussion with your current manager about the policy that made you leave!
lexiaaaa35 points11m ago
I always prefer these cause then I get paid for all the time I’m at the store. I hate having to take a lunch cause I don’t wanna have to be at Starbucks without getting paid lol
lewabwee12 points11m ago
Yeah I’m the same way, at least in so far as I’d rather have a 5.75 than a 6. Plus it’s always nice when you’re just not allowed to stay a little late even if you wanted to.
Mhill08231 points11m ago
This
HSinvestor21 points11m ago
As a student, I love these because I want to be paid for every minute that I'm tied to the siren.
sailorgrumpycat14 points11m ago
As a ssv, i always treat that as a 6 anyway, because people always stay a *little* late doing a last task, making their own drinks while still helping, covering a bit for someone elses break, etc. My SM has never once questioned this practice, so either she understands and empathizes, or it isn't even on her radar.
lcvefoolish7 points11m ago
wish all my shifts were 5.75 hours, i hate taking a lunch lol. also i like my coworkers and the time flies by, lunch just screws that’s up 🤷🏼♀️
AndrewSaidThis5 points11m ago
Eh, I don’t mind them. If you get a 6 hour shift you’re there for 6 hours and only paid for 5.5 hours. But with 5.75 you’re there 15 minutes less and paid more.
Responsible_Snow71094 points11m ago
I open today 4:30am to 10:15am with just one good ol 10 minute break. That will surely refresh and revive me 🙃
Edit: typo
LuckyNumber-Bot6 points11m ago
All the numbers in your comment added up to 69. Congrats!
4 + 30 + 10 + 15 + 10 = 69
^($1 to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)
Responsible_Snow71098 points11m ago
Good bot. Well there ya go...maybe starbucks did that on purpose telling me in a different way to go f myself lmao
Good_Human_Bot_v23 points11m ago
Good human.
Responsible_Snow71092 points11m ago
😮
wannabekruff1 points11m ago
Nice
hollsberry4 points11m ago
We call them the finesse shift
tiredbarista00043 points11m ago
so they don’t have to schedule a meal or a second ten- helps them keep us understaffed consistently
RubySapphireSage3 points11m ago
I take 15/20 minutes breaks idgaf . Because if shifts get to be in the back not working then so should I have a breather to relax. I also cover longer for partners who need that 15 /20
[deleted]3 points11m ago
[deleted]
anxiouspeony [OP]1 points10m ago
That puts me at about 28+ and how much I paid that works well for me but it burns me out very quickly
Hispanicman1013 points11m ago
I ducking hate those and I’m the only one who gets the majority of them. Lucky for me sometimes if we’re slow I get an extra 10
Mickey_Fan513 points11m ago
Are those shifts for corporate stores?
Mickey_Fan513 points11m ago
Didn’t realize baristas can be scheduled with little hours. Seems like a waste of time going there to work 5.75 hours or less.
anxiouspeony [OP]2 points10m ago
Thankfully my location is a 2 minute drive from my apartment so it doesn’t bother me much!
Disney_Dude19983 points11m ago
I have one of those tomorrow and a 5.50 Friday. It’s complete bullshit
Flat-Whereas30750 points11m ago
Is “5.50 Friday” just a nickname for that shift?
I’ve never heard it before.
(And my brain wants verification and can’t let it go, because OBVIOUSLY it’s a nickname…. But brain does what brain wants to do.)
Notsotaciturn2 points11m ago
Also (I know, I'm comment-dumping) last year I got my Master's Degree in Business, specifically HR, and when I first moved across the country I worked at Starbucks after grad school. Man my HR red flags were pinging. I've never had job where the customer experience and the employee experience were so out of sync. Wow.
Notsotaciturn2 points11m ago
Baristas should be considered Essential workers. If there is such a concept, because In my head I just call them people. And treat them like people. Baristas are a national treasure and should be respected. You NEVER f*** with the person who brings you your food.
Notsotaciturn2 points11m ago
When my bff was a McManager she legit was told by corporate to give smokers cigarette breaks to keep them productive. On the clock.
LovelyLatte2 points11m ago
99.9% of my shifts are like this and it makes me so mad. I can count the times I’ve worked enough to earn a lunch break on one hand🙃
SqzHerLimes2 points11m ago
i personally dont mind it. i wish i got scheduled longer though
Victoriamarie032 points11m ago
You get more hours this way, regardless of the fact that it’s fucking annoying
sani_anra2 points11m ago
the SM at my store does 5.5 hour shifts for all non-shifts bc the shifts weren’t remembering to send baristas on their breaks/complained about having to send baristas on their breaks 🙃
alexisss121 points11m ago
omg that's terrible. those people should not be shifts
princessbunny212 points11m ago
5.75s are my store’s bread and butter (though shifts tend to get a few 6-8hr shifts here and there), and we all love them. We’d all much rather be here for less time and get paid more than if we had 6hr shifts and got a 30.
Scheduling like this also makes it easier on the floor, because you’re not shorting it for nearly as long by giving 10s rather than 30s. It allows you to rotate baristas easily, too.
ceoofindica2 points11m ago
I hate them. We don’t get a 30. It feels like you’re working more than what you are. You could be working two shifts (come in the morning and leave slightly in the afternoon). I hate them lol
firepaper2 points11m ago
Honestly I prefer it to a 6 hr shift or 6.25 hr shift just because I’d rather get paid and leave earlier
official_koda_2 points11m ago
That’s literally what I had the whole two years I worked at Starbucks. I honestly didn’t want to work 8 hour shifts…but what’s the logic in people working an extra 15 mins getting a lunch but not when you work nearly 6 hours and get one measly 10 min break. And at Starbucks there is NO downtime so it’s not like you can take any sort of rest.
evilprozac792 points11m ago
It's like they figure out how long they can schedule you without giving you a real break. Kinda feels like you get screwed. Either commit to 6 hrs + lunch or just cut me loose at 5 1/2 hours.
Velvet35352 points11m ago
Absolutely worst shift ever
Gameb0i62 points11m ago
You don’t get lunch break? Wtf! That sounds hella illegal.
Numerous_Upstairs9382 points11m ago
We typically don’t have the staff to run multiple 30s tbh, there are certain shifts i can tell were only scheduled so people can have breaks.
depressedbarista4202 points11m ago
that sounds like poor management.
Numerous_Upstairs9382 points11m ago
Moreso training new baristas, older ones going to college, our store set up is honestly utopia. The district on the other hand? Yikes
malrosen2 points11m ago
HATE THOSE SHIFTS!!
thedevvylee1 points10m ago
Yea I was just talking about this at work. 15 minutes is the difference between having 10 minute break or 40-50 minutes worth of breaks and it makes me cry when it’s on my schedule. My asm does it so they don’t have to give us a lunch 😭 Edit: time changed for math
WhittleAbby1 points11m ago
I usually get those for training
Carsatan1 points11m ago
Our shifts give us a 15 instead of just one 10 🥰
jordan_leigh1 points11m ago
*Mr.Krabbs voice* MONEY!!! :D
zambiers1 points11m ago
I work 4.75 hour shifts
TheFriendlyFeminist1 points11m ago
THE WORST. Before I quit I told my manager I will literally quit if you keep scheduling me these. I ended up quitting anyway Lolol but they are the absolute worst. Especially if you are always just put on bar like I was
champshere1 points11m ago
Take a guess.
numnumnum_1 points11m ago
this may be an unpopular opinion but i would definitely rather work a 5.75 hour shift than a shift a bit longer than that and get a half. it’s more efficient for me to work 5.75 hours and get paid for all of it than to work 6 and get paid less.
MatchingColors1 points11m ago
5.75 hr shift is nice once and a while, my store gives two 10s for those shifts
What’s awful is the 6.15 hr shift where you have to take a half but still only work 5.75 hrs.
