Any tips for learning drinks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by daisy0953
Hello everyone, I completed training about a month ago and mainly work on the weekends and haven't gotten the hang of making drinks. Do y'all have any tips? I was put on bar once after training and that was probably about 2-3 weeks ago. I'm super nervous to be put on bar during peak. 😳

Ask for bar time off-peak. I’m a ssv and I always put new baristas on bar after or before peak until they feel comfortable. The only way to truly learn is to do it, and if you aren’t being put on there now you need to advocate for yourself and talk to your ssv or SM! :)

Thank you! I'm just nervous to mess up and I remembered that last time I was on bar I asked sooooo many questions. I know I'll eventually get the hang of it.

Ask questions!! I was a trainer before I was a ssv as well, i promise, we WANT the questions. It’s better that you ask and learn standards than guess. I promise. 💜
You’re doing great, it will start feeling natural after a few months. Generally speaking i think it takes about three months to feel comfortable on bar. By the holidays you’ll be a pro

Two tips that I have were from other Reddit posts I saw here.
For hot bar, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the standard number of syrup pumps per size. Someone said instead of remembering 2, 3, 4, or 5, just say to yourself "short, short, tall, grande, venti" as you pump, stopping when you get to the size you're making.
For cold bar, I also inexplicably could not remember which of the mocha frap variations got mocha drizzle. Another thing posted here was, "chips get the drips". Anything that uses the frap chips gets mocha drizzle.

I was one of the unfortunate barista who never got on bar after my training. I was also working during the holiday season so that didn’t help. I would recommend you to watch YouTube videos on barista clogs and they have and pretend that I am making the drink so I followed the steps. Also my trainer gave me a sheet with all the no. of shots , syrups goes to each drink. So I review that every single time I go before my shift. I also use the Starbucks app to know some of the drinks like iced London fog . Also I picked up shifts at other stores so they put me on bar so that helped a lot. Also on pos whenever I have time I go in the find order menu and look at each drink and try to remember the shots and pumps.

you can learn the recipes off the p.o.s, when you ring in a drink if you look at the right side of the monitor you will see how many shots, pumps, etc. go in the drink. it is the easiest way I learned. especially useful if you find yourself on drive a lot.
