Customer paying with $100 bill (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rory_pdf
I’m working DTR today and this woman whips out a $100 bill. Because we’re a Starbucks (and not a bank🤩) I tell her I can’t break a $100 bill for a $6 order. My manager always instructs us to give the customer their order if this happens, but she drove off. Not even 5 minutes later she calls the store saying, “You need a sign that says you can’t break $100s”.

If you’re a customer reading this, please just have common sense. Starbucks are not banks.

>Not even 5 minutes later she calls the store saying, “You need a sign that says you can’t break $100s”.

First of all, people love to be babied. Theyre so lazy that they dont wana use common sense or some kind of thinking skills to realize that we are not a bank

Secondly, shes most definitely the type that probably wouldnt read the sign anyway
dirtychai0218 60 points 11m ago
no literally i bet a $100 bill (hehe) that if there WAS a sign she’d just complain that it was placed in a bad spot and she “couldn’t see it” or something. when i worked at a grocery store during covid i could have screamed “MASKS ARE MANDATORY FOR ENTRY” and ppl still would have been like “i had no idea!!!”
Responsible_Snow7109 21 points 11m ago
Lol some people don't like to use their brains. They want everybody else to do the work for them and tell them things so they don't have to read things or look things up on their own. They've become so accustomed to being babied.
makmelaf17 9 points 11m ago
Even if we had the sign on the menu and or the register... people will still ask you to break a $100
Responsible_Snow7109 4 points 11m ago
Yep cuz people dont read. During the part of the pandemic when we had round stickers on the ground of where to stand to form a line towards the register, people would still form a line a different way without reading the stickers. At the hand off area, we had stickers on the ground that showed where people should stand that was 6 feet apart but we still had people standing right up against the espresso machines and the counters. We had signs up on the door during the part of the pandemic where customers had to be told to wear masks and they still came in without one. Had a lady looking at the menu boards where the frappuccinos are listed. She asked for 2 venti frappuccinos. She was asked what kind and she said "i dont know" and we asked her if she just wanted a regular coffee frapp and she said "i guess. Whatever. Thats fine"......even tho the whole time she was looking at the frapp part of the menu board lol people do not read

Dude came in with the same thing. Drip coffee and a $100 bill. My coworker on drive says "I can take this but you're gonna get fives, ones, and rolls of coins as change.

Customer laughs thinking it's a joke and keeps holding out $100 bill. Coworker takes bill, hands drink, then proceeds to give fives, ones, a couple rolls of quarters and a few rolls of nickels and dimes.

Customer's face goes from laughing to angry. "wait seriously?" He yells getting increasingly agitated.

"yep, have a nice day" our partner says as he promptly closes the window 😂

Customer drives away angrily but like what did you expect 🤷‍♂️
starfire03 118 points 11m ago
I used to be the petty AF SSV who would break a $100 and give back $34 in rolled coins because as said by others, Starbucks is NOT a bank.

More to the point, banks will ask you how you want your cash split up. Get. Smaller. Bills. People.
Necessary_Low939 50 points 11m ago
Yes banks do do that so I don’t know why they think it’s ok to bring a $100 bill to a coffee shop. Ur supervisor is savage.
starfire03 31 points 11m ago
Oh that was me 😁. My whole thought was I'm doing the change order, I'll fix it later. So many credit cards magically appeared when I started to give rolls od quarters 🤣
Necessary_Low939 5 points 11m ago
NICE LOL
awesomechief989 5 points 11m ago
Now I’m a shift and can’t cause it cafe only change tills. But as a barista in drive I would count $1 and maybe throw in two 5’s 😂
Sohotomi 36 points 11m ago
You can inform them they can put it onto a gift-card or reload it on their phone, but they never want to. 🤣 We also won't break $100s.
myugglass321 3 points 10m ago
this is so smart thank you for the idea!
Sohotomi 3 points 10m ago
No problem! Someone from my store told me it :) Usually after you tell them that they'll magically produce a smaller bill lol. Otherwise it works if they really have nothing smaller!
TheDoubleDan 33 points 11m ago
We used to have customers come in and ask us to break a bill even though they weren't going to order anything.

Our store was LITERALLY next door to a bank...
Hamchook 9 points 11m ago
Easier to pass a counterfeit off at a Starbucks than a bank, unfortunately.
Affectionate_Fart 31 points 11m ago
So I won’t take big bills, when I worked DT I told them X amount back would be in the form of a gift card. Had a dude order a Sammy and grande coffee and it was about 7-9 dollars. Dude magically found a credit card when I said “I’ll put the $90 on a gift card that you can use on your next visit.” ^.^
Professional-Cat393 1 points 10m ago
That’s a good idea but did people ever actually go for that?
Affectionate_Fart 2 points 10m ago
One or two, the rest actually “magically” found a smaller bill or their sbux card.
rudebii 23 points 11m ago
My standard goto was "We can take a debit or credit card, or put the change on a gift card." When they'd say no, I'd say "Those are our only three options today."

I was not going to fuck up the bank giving away rolls of coin, one and fives just because people feel entitled to use starbucks like a bank.

The other day I had a man get upset that I couldn’t break 100 on a $5 order. He was all “how do you not have change for that much?” And in my head I was like “how do you only have that size bill with you?” I told him that it was unfortunately too early and I didn’t have enough bills for it. He tried to put up a fight but eventually he handed me his card (after saying he didn’t have one). People be entitled sometimes
discountairpods 12 points 11m ago
i just tell people we don’t take bills larger than a $20 for orders under $20
outcaststomp 11 points 11m ago
I just no longer accept $100s. I'll sit there and wait for the customer to finally give me another form of payment that I know they have or they get nothing.
For context: My store is located by a bunch of rich private schools so I deal with a lot of the snobby moms in their Porsches and BMWs. I don't play with these soccer moms
Ace_Hardwear 9 points 11m ago
i legit just had someone pay with a $100 for a 12 dollar order and found it funny, i even told them i was going to have to give them rolls of quarters and they were okay with that, my SSV counted it and then told them that because of how they payed, now other people are going to have less cash, basically gaslit them to feel bad about it 🤩🤩🤩
mewwissa 9 points 11m ago
When I worked for the siren, I was told we can’t NOT accept any legal tender…so I’d be opening lock boxes to make change all day long. Like what’s even the point of the lock box at that point. Starbucks doesn’t actually respect their own rules because a lot of them don’t make sense. They won’t put up signs that say “no bills larger than $20”
celloqueer 11 points 11m ago
Which is wild bc I’ve been told that it’s majorly against the rules to make change from the lock box...
Cathach2 3 points 11m ago
Yeah it is lol, I can't remember if it's one of the instafireds like opening the doors after close, but we are definitely not supposed to do that
0x52and1x52 2 points 11m ago
Definitely not against the rules lmfao
uwumoment 3 points 11m ago
at my store i put up 2 signs that said we can’t accept $100s because it was happening so frequently. i am trying to get the newer folks to understand we literally can’t break the $100 without violating a lot of starbucks rules
Mea-fae_Owl73 9 points 11m ago
You’re right we are not a bank but at my store we absolutely break $100s. Our DM will not let us refuse to break a big bill. If we do we get written up. We let the customer know that the change back will be all $5s, $1s, and possibly rolled coin. We then ask if they have anything smaller or a credit/debit card. What’s funny is even after informing them of what they will get and they choose to move forward, they still get pissy about it. And we have a bank in our parking lot! 🤦🏽‍♀️
TRoseee 9 points 11m ago
We’ve been instructed to absolutely not take any, especially because we’ve had an uptick in the community of fake $50s and $100s being used.
SortaSketchyNDed 8 points 11m ago
When you get cash, you can easily go to a bank to break it. Sounds like she could’ve also wanted to flex her bill but got angry lol. I’ve had customers try and get their large bills broken and 9/10 they’re assholes about me not being able to do so. Sorry I’m not the bank ya hooligans. Smh
PlaneJupiter 7 points 11m ago
One time a bad regular of my store tried to break a $100 early in the morning when we wouldn’t even have much extra cash for their order of a drink( or two I forgot). My dtr barista came to get me from my break for assistance, I took over and eventually the guy gave me two giant handfuls of coins and told me to count them to pay for his drinks instead. Needless to say I ended up having to file an incident report, due to the aggression and threats this guy flew at me
boyz_with_a_zed 6 points 11m ago
I was bitched out by a tourist couple who wanted to pay for a $5 order with a $100 bill the minute we opened. Then they kept telling me it was only this country that wouldn't break a bill that large. I literally would have to give them all the small bills in my till. Ugh. I'm still low-key traumatized by that episode.
darkwolf523 6 points 11m ago
I just tell them I can’t take this. Sure I’ll check if it’s legit first but then I’ll say I can’t break it
Dyonisusreborn 5 points 11m ago
It’s funny cause that just happens to my ssv and the lady who try to paid for the tall pike with the 100$ bill drove three times times the drive to just to cuss her out and on the third time we just told her she was banned
wormybabybabu 5 points 11m ago
I love being like "wow thats such a generous tip thank you so much, the whole team appreciates it!!"
Elegant-Tomato720 5 points 11m ago
That's so funny because at work today my colleague literally told someone "we are not a bank" after a random man came inside and asked for her to change his note, and after her explaining multiple times she couldn't, and him insisting and becoming slightly aggressive, she ended up just losing it with him and saying that, I had to hold back the tears.
threepeasonepod 4 points 11m ago
whenever this happens i explain i *might* be able to accept it, but they’re likely going to end up with rolls of coins and tons of small bills. they quickly find another payment method that somehow didn’t previously exist until bringing that up.
SunBusiness8291 3 points 11m ago
She probably asked for $100s at the bank. I mean, people don't even use cash anymore, but certainly not $100s, unless you're spending big $$$.
awkward_cat_man_ 2 points 11m ago
I had this older Asshat order a red eye cos he can’t say iced coffee with a shot cos he has to be fancy or something I don’t know but he paid with a 50$ and I took it cos I knew I could break it. I gave him 5$ and 1$ he got so mad and said what the hell is this where is your manager I said the manager isn’t in but I can get you my shift leader. Anyway shift gives him lager bills because this guy is just so against having lower bills or something. Then he misgendered me and said I didn’t mean anything but it. In a tone I said it’s fine. I made him his damn red eye without a word and walked away.
_squintyemonster 2 points 11m ago
Yes I don’t think a sign would help unfortunately 🫠
floofxs2 2 points 11m ago
Once at the drive thru a lady paid with card and wanted to tip I explained the whole thing about no tip on card bla bla bla.. and she said “I only have a $100 bill can you break it?” I told her I’d have to ask my supervisor, by then the DT line got pretty long and this was during early 2021, she said “you know what you’re all out here working in this pandemic so I can have my coffee, don’t worry about breaking it” and she put the $100 in the tip box.
WAtransplant2021 2 points 11m ago
I had a guy want me to put a Benjamin on his app. I had to apologetically refuse. He was not at all happy but I explained that was a primary avenue for fraud 🤷‍♀️
RubySapphireSage 2 points 11m ago
This sucks . It’s so hard when people pull out big bills . Because literally I sometimes can’t bother a shift to keep opening the tills . Literally by the end of the shift I barely have cash . It pisses me off I’ll see someone have exact change / card and or a ten and they whip out an 100 🥺.. like why ? Do 😍you 😡need 🙃a🖤extra 🥰 wad💥of ✨cash 😘?!
WingsofFlight 2 points 11m ago
I feel like this with 50s in the UK. That is the largest amount money wise, we have as a bill. The amount of times I have had to explain I can't break it. Many places won't take them at all.
Squidicci 2 points 11m ago
people get SO angry when we tell them they can't do that. just use your card, seriously.
dallizzlee 1 points 11m ago
We got a yelp review once about getting change for a $100 bill in ones and fives “like nobody pays with a 20 all day at Starbucks?!”

We tried to warn you bud.
