Barista in Training here… how do I make a Chai Tea Latte? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TakeTheWs
Talking both iced and hot versions. My barista trainer is gone for a couple days, and I had a customer come in earlier complaining about how I made their chai tea latte incorrectly.

What I did (grande version) was 4 pumps of Chai, 2 shots, and topped with 3 second steamed milk. Did I do it incorrectly? Thanks!

Nope.
So chai doesn’t get shots.
It’s only a latte because of milk.
So the “standard way” is to fill half the cup with hot water after pumping syrup (3/4/5) and then steaming a short amount of milk (or tall for venti).
Iced: pumps of syrup, milk to third line, ice and hand off).

I see… are there any other drinks that are a similar procedure to this that I should know of?

Uh shaken espresso (should be) half pumps, at least that’s what my manager has told me.
If you go into the iPad and click on store resources it shows you all the drinks and stuff.

This and the London fog tea latte are the same for the finish, and the Brown sugar oat americano.

For the Chai, 4 pumps, water to half, steamed milk small amount of foam(?) Not sure exactly how much is standard there.

London fog, 4 pumps van, 2 bags, hot water to half, steamed milk and small amount of foam(?) Once again, not exactly sure.

BSOA, 4 pumps, hot water to half, steamed milk, foam.

All grande size.

What’s this BSOA you’re talking about? It’s an americano with no espresso? You must not be in the US cuz the only brown sugar drink we have is the shaken espresso

Ahhh sorry. Im from Canada, we have a Brown sugar oat Americano.

Grande-
3 blonde shots
4 pumps brown sugar
Water to half, steamed milk to top

You've seen what other people have said but I do just want to mention that sometimes people will request espresso in chais and they call it a "dirty chai", if they ask for a dirty chai they just want one shot of espresso added unless they specify otherwise. :)

Perfect opportunity to ask “how dirty do you want it?” 😏

So grande chai normally is 4 pumps chai, hot water filled half way, then steamed milk. There should be no espresso unless the customer wants. Iced chai only get chai and milk.

Everyone let you know the chai recipe.

Steamed milk. Do you have the new mastrena? If so the 1-3 seconds for a latte is really like 1. 3 makes it too foamy for a latte.

everyone already commented the recipe, so i'll add something else:

the ipads are your best friends when it comes to recipes. the store resources app has a search bar and you can type in any drink, and it will show you the recipe for every size both hot + iced. dont hesitate to use it if you need help

For example purposes we are just gonna pretend we are making a grande:

Hot-
Steam milk of customers choice (default 2%), pump 4 pumps of chai, hot water half way, top off with steamed milk

Iced-
4 pumps chai, milk to the top black line, ice

Pretty simple

other commentors have covered the chai tea latte recipe, so i’ll just chime in with the matcha tea latte recipe because it similarly trips people up:

for hot, 2% milk (or requested alternative) milk in steaming pitcher to appropriate line, 2/3/4 scoops matcha in pitcher with milk, aerate & steam like a normal latte, pour into cup. no espresso shots unless requested

for iced, 2% milk (or requested alternative) to the MILK line in a shaker, 2/3/4 scoops matcha in the shaker, appropriate sized scoop of ice, shake 10 times, pour into cup. again, no espresso shots unless requested
