What is the best way to prepare to be a supervisor?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Forest_Beetle
At the moment there is no supervisor positions open but when one does come up I hope to apply. The problem is that most of the higher ups see me as the "new" barista (though I've been there for 7 months). I have worked hard on mastering all the various positions and tasks around the store and one of my supervisors say I am one of the best, though the other supervisors/managers don't see it. In my last supervisor interview was continuously called "new" and "of need for more experience". What is the next steps for me to take to show them I am a very good barista and steps I should take to make myself stand out as a good fit for the supervisor position when it comes around again?

Are you a trainer? That would be the next step. After that show you can lead the team as a barista. Be positive and motivating. Coaching when and where it’s appropriate. Show you can handle situations without calling on an SSV to support.

I am a trainer! I became one and did a half on one baristas training but we are full staffed and are not hiring anybody at the moment sadly.

Awesome! You can also ask your SM if there are stores in the district/close by that may need trainer support. Training baristas at other stores is also an excellent way to grow/develop in your role for next step and getting to know other partners in the area is never a bad thing if you want to move up !

Make sure to help the green beans, help teach them and explain things to them they haven’t done yet. If you’re about to do something and you see one of them looking loss, ask them if they’ve done it and if not ask them if you can teach them. The shifts and managers will notice and it will help your chances.

Equally important is how NOT to do this, which is harping on your peers for minor misses in order to display “leadership.” Always keep in mind that you need good relationships to lead and set a good example before calling people out.

Be the one that the manager and shift supervisor team can count on to keep things running smoothly.
Pro tip: being a good barista is only the bare minimum.
You absolutely SHOULD be a good barista, but a supervisor role isn’t just an extension of that position, in some ways it’s just a completely different job. Yes, you’re often doing most of the same things as baristas, but as a supervisor you’re now responsible to effectively BE the manager whenever the manager isn’t there. In the next few weeks you’ll want to gain the reputation amongst the management team as being basically a shift who hasn’t been promoted yet. They need to think of you as a person who can be relied on to keep a cool head during conflict, be able to think clearly and decisively in an emergency, be able to take action and make smart choices, be aware of your surroundings and be good at reading a room, always aware of what’s going on in the store, responsible enough to be trusted with cash and the safe, responsible for the safety of customers and partners, ability to weigh the situation and choose what to prioritize when things get tough, achieve seemingly impossible goals, communicate, etc.
The manager and shifts often have meetings and you want your name to be the one that they bring up when discussing “there’s a shift position that will be available soon, who should we promote.”
And of course you’ll also want to just directly ask your manager “what do I need to do to work towards getting promoted to shift supervisor.”
