Customer got mad at how I made her Americano (self.starbucksbaristas)

So I’m making an americano, and they wanted half & half. So I put the shots, water, and half&half in and the customer is watching me the entire time.
Customer: I’ve never seen an americano made like that.
Me: Oh, well I just made it the normal way
Customer: Why did you put water in it?
Me: That’s what an americano is. Espresso and hot water.
Customer: That’s not how my husband and I make it. We make it with espresso and milk.
Me: Oh! That would just be a latte!
Customer: Huh. *walks out without another word”
Had me doubting how to make an americano for like an hour 😭

What does not bug me is them not knowing cuz a lot of people don’t know and it’s ok to be wrong…
What bugs me is that when they are wrong but they will die on that hill arguing with people who specialized in the “thing” they are wrong about.

You’re right, of course. If they seemed unhappy the easiest way to make the moment right here would have just been to say, “oh yea, that’s a latte! Would you like that instead?” And just make it for them. If they said no, then you’ve done all you can do. If they said yes, then you educated a customer and still made the moment right :)

I had someone ask me why I didn't steam the milk for his iced latte. When I told him that you do not steam/heat an iced latte, he said every other Starbucks does.
