Is there racism and hostility between the baristas at Starbucks at any of the locations you work at? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by krisniche
I am a former barista at Starbucks and I only lasted there for about a week before quitting. The reason I quit was due to feeling unwelcomed by my coworkers and racial hostility from a white female in my age group. I was referred to as a “Negress”, darkie, and other racially insensitive slurs I won’t mention here by the same white female who was my trainer. To be honest, the work was easy as I previously worked at a Starbucks cafe inside a Barnes and Noble. However, I was treated as if I was dumb and slow during training and was being constantly micromanaged when I already knew how to make the drinks and prepare food. My question is is Starbucks not really happy go lucky and foster a positive environment for employees? From the outside looking in, I would always notice people of all backgrounds and races having a nice time and chatting up with each other and I envy that because I wish that was my experience and could’ve stayed working there.

Starbucks has its issues but every store I’ve worked at has a zero tolerance kind of thing for this kind of behavior. I guarantee corporate would love to hear about your experience and this person could be fired and prevented from discriminating in the future.

Oh yikes. I'm sorry you experienced that! Unfortunately it really depends on (the leadership of) each store. Mine was pretty inclusive, but i saw bad ones too. If you get the chance, name names in your exit surveys! Get her gone!

To answer your question though, Starbucks is sometimes great and sometimes terrible. Don't trust corporate's advertising about what a wonderful and happy place it is, but I found it pretty neat for a bit.

It depends on ur store, I’m from nyc and the store is quite diverse so I don’t experience it.

The company itself prides itself with equality. However, you have bad apples; if not dealt with right away they feel the power and control to continue that behavior. I had a partner that was racially discriminated with a previous SM. She did nothing about it. All partners contacted DM about it and he got something done about it. The racist partner got fired actually over theft first. It was going to be a long process to actually get her fired over discrimination. So they found she stole a tumbler and fired her. Also, they made the victim of racism change their schedule so that they didn’t work with that partner. That’s messed up. The other partner being racist should have to change their hours. My point is, going through the correct channels will get you answers.
