Shaken espresso “upside down”???? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MrsOceanGrown
What’s with people mobile ordering drinks other than Carmel macchiato upside down. I don’t know what to do. I’ve gotten brown sugar oat espresso ordered upside down. And also just shots of espresso customized with add ons, also upside down. What do y’all do? Is there a standard?

When people get the shaken espressos upside down, i put the milk in the cup first and then the shaken components on top lol i think the people that do that just want it in an iced latte version but they don't want to pay for that because I think it's cheaper to get it as a shaken espresso. But one time I got an order for a brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso, upside down...and blended lmao i ignored the upside down modification because it makes zero sense if ur guna get it blended

Yeah that just hurt my brain 😂

Lol it really does not make sense on every drink. I need people for one whole day to just order menu item drinks without customizations. Lol we as Baristas would probably think it's really weird if that ever happened because there's more customized drinks then actual untouched menu item drinks

Right? When I was a customer in the 90s there was no real modifications. No whip or non fat was about it. Fast forward to 2022 and hardly anything is not heavily modified. I love my Pike and white mocha croud keeping it real.

Lol yea its the best when i get people that order an actual menu item...i will literally wait like 3 or 4 seconds just in case theyre about to tell me any modifications and when i dont hear any, im truly taken aback 😄

I worked early 2010 n it was also just whip or no whip n change in milk.

the only thing i can think of is that from a customers perspective, when they order a caramel macchiato upside down, they receive a drink where the espresso and milk are mixed together instead of layered. by this logic, applying upside down to a shaken espresso could just mean the customer wants their drink stirred together and not layered, like how it would normally come if you were to pour the milk on top. easier to just say stirred, but im not sure thats an option on mobile, so that could be where the backwards thinking comes from

Oh! So i was thinking they wanted it layered at that point by saying upside down. I forgot the shaken espressos actually are layered because when done the espresso is at the bottom and milk kind of floats on top. So pour the milk in the shaker? Or in the cup before pouring shaken contents

technically by standard if we were to follow the upside down modification thatd be milk first and then shots on top, but honestly whatever way works since im /almost/ positive “upside down” is a term popularized purely because of the caramel macchiato so expecting this modification to translate properly across drinks when the drinks themselves as well as their prep is entirely different is a bit goofy to me 😬 dont know what sbux was thinking with that one

Milk first I guess?

I assume the upside down espresso means they want it made the old way (and in my opinion, the correct way), so ice is added after the shots are poured.
