Hey yo…. Called out sick for an open today as I was vomiting through the late night and I’m super worried about retaliation/a write up as I’ve only been here for two months. Does calling out in your first couple of months look really bad? I want to keep this job to build my references and bulk up my resume more than anything and need to keep up a good reputation
P.S. my store only accepts callouts through the store phone no personal calls or texts so I had no choice but to call out *when* we opened. Super worried about that

If it’s once no one is going to think about it too much. If it’s a pattern then they will and you will likely get written up.
People get sick - it’s normal. People don’t get sick every Friday morning for weeks in a row.

Ty! I appreciate all of the comments sm I’ve just been worried because despite everything this is the best job I’ve ever had as far as the culture, coworkers, pay, etc. and I’m hoping it’ll give my resume/references some bulk that my pre-college jobs aren’t cutting it with 😅 I know there are ppl who call out constantly and are still beloved so idk why I was so worried Persona 2 best persona btw 👍👍🤓

Although it may feel bad / look bad, if you were truly vomiting through the night then by food handling rules, you’re unable to be around any food services due to possible contamination and endangerment of customers. It may look bad at first but I’m reality, remember it’s for your health. Also, not missing a day in 2 months is great! I would say since you have a reputation of being reliable and with you being sick to the point you can’t handle food— it would be unreasonable for them to retaliate against you or be any form of upset with you. Sounds like you’re doing a great job!

I've had to call out when opening before, i texted both the opening shift and the SM. The shift so they weren't just hanging out outside wondering if/when I'd show. And the SM so they could maybe try to find coverage and/or turn off mobiles if the store was opening late. I did call in first thing and got made fun of for it. It's a health code violation for you to be working if you're vomiting, so you're doing the responsible thing. I would like to say there's no chance of retaliation, but it seems like some stores are super toxic
