So i usually go to my own starbucks to get my drink but sometimes it’s too far. I usually order and iced espresso with white mocha and other stuff. But every time i get my drink there is just a thick layer of white mocha at the bottom of it and it’s hard to stir when the cup is filled with ice. Pls pls pls stir ur drinks. I have anxiety and feel bad when i say “hi sorry can u pls stir it a bit more”. Cause i know it’s annoying but i don’t wanna slurp up white mocha
EDIT: I didn’t mean to upset anyone, yes i can mix my own drink but it’s just tough when my cup is filled with iced and i end up getting milk all over me. I didn’t know the new standard but now i do. I just thought it was normal to mix drinks when you see an inch full of white mocha at the bottom of someone’s cup.
hotlinee216 points10m ago
personally if an espresso drink has syrup in it, i always pour the syrup in the cup first and pour the shots over it. then spin the cup around a few times and add everything else
IzzyIllustrations102 points10m ago
Honestly thats how it's supposed to be done. Going with sequencing, pull the shots, pump the syrup, return the cup to shots. It doesn't make sense that syrup would be clumped in the bottom if it's done right.
stonedtwitgnome49 points10m ago
I always thought this was common sense.. until I was the customer and was in OP's shoes
I'd award you I'd I could
Distinct-Apartment3924 points10m ago
Yeah I always swirled the espresso shots right after they pulled ESPECIALLY if it was a sauce not a syrup. Way too many times I’ve been like “huh. My pumpkin spice doesn’t taste like pumpkin that much. Whatever” just to get hit with all of it in my last 2 sips 😭
Traditional_Wait_28512 points10m ago
I do the same thing. White mocha and the other thick syrups need to be melted into the espresso, imo.
Whenever I decide to have an iced coffee or cold brew with a thick syrup, I shake it. I know it’s not standard to do, but I will suggest to some customers that they should ask for it shaken so it doesn’t settle!
Glad this isn’t just a me thing!
iSpeakMeme6 points10m ago
I always pour a little of the cold brew or coffee in the cup first and swirl it as I pump mocha or wm so it mixes together and doesn't just lay on the bottom
paisleyboxers3 points10m ago
Came here to see that SOMEONE would post that. It’s been over 20 years since I slung coffee as a job and if I only remember doing that and just being floored no one else does it.
This is the way
Responsible_Snow710971 points10m ago
Oh yea lol one time on my day off, i went another Starbucks near my house. It was a drive thru. I just do not like going to my store on my day off lol. But anyway i ordered a grande iced shaken espresso, no classic/sub white mocha, no milk...just extra ice to the top. White mocha was sitting in the bottom of my cup. Lol they shook the espresso and ice cuz i saw the foam in the cup from the espresso shots, they just didnt shake it with the white mocha.
trentablondelatte [OP]48 points10m ago
what the heck, i’ve never heard of that. I always shake in any type of syrup.
Responsible_Snow710910 points10m ago
Yeah I mean I don't understand why it happened but shortly after that I started getting into black cold Brews and black iced coffees and straight up black espresso shots so it wasn't something that I drank for a while. But when I was drinking it I was mainly getting it just from my store but that one day I wanted it on my day off and it was just sitting on the bottom of the cup so all I was drinking was straight up strong espresso with nothing to help with the bitterness since white mocha was all the way at the bottom lol
QueenMergh-22 points10m ago
White mocha in shake cups is an allergen issue though I thought the sauces didn't get shaken ever
Responsible_Snow710913 points10m ago
Well someone on here told me a while ago that in Canada (i think it was Canada) that they dont put any dairy in the shaker. Im in the US and we do put dairy in our shakers. Starbucks also states that we used shared equipment and that we cant guarantee anything to be allergen free. Idk which country u live in but we most definitely use dairy in our shakers in the US
kristis32333 points10m ago
Before the pink drink was a thing dairy never went in the shaker. Iced green tea was mixed in the cup. I’m in the US, been with Sbux since 05
QueenMergh1 points10m ago
Thank you, yes. This was a recent change in the US, used to be standard
Responsible_Snow71091 points10m ago
Oh ok, yea i got hired in 2020 so i just know we always put dairy in shakers. But yea i never knew it was a thing in the US to not do that
stonedtwitgnome2 points10m ago
Dunkin forgets the syrup about 75% of the time and ffs why is it so hard to put some damn hot water in the matcha powder to make an iced matcha not look like vomit in a cup? About as awful as the shop owner that tried to make us use the "add hot water" apple cider packs and sell them for 4.50. No, we have apple juice, I'm making it correctly or selling it for like $1.75, Dale. Just because you don't care about your shop's reputation doesn't mean I don't care about mine as a barista.
WingsofFlight2 points10m ago
Yeah, I am in the UK and this was told to me as well.
QueenMergh1 points10m ago
Welp not afraid of some downvotes, I'd love my WM shaken into SDS but I don't want someone with a dairy allergy to get a tea from the same cup!
BlackWunWun19 points10m ago
White mocha specifically literally demands it in ever drink its in. Like the syrup is so thick there's no way you're getting the full flavor in any drink unless you swirl it up
hmancentipede15 points10m ago
i almost always do my best to swirl it together so that it mixes, whether there’s a rush or not—it just bothers me when they just sit on top of each other 😂 I always try to treat each drink as if I were making it for myself, unless you’re an ass then idc ✨
MrsOceanGrown11 points10m ago
Charlotte? 😂 is this you?
Unknownbarista2026 points10m ago
I’m called Charlotte and this freaked me out hahs
RepresentativeRan4 points10m ago
this is concerning bc i was complaining about this to my best friend (who's also a barista) the other day and my name is charlotte too😭😭😭
navkabar9 points10m ago
idc if it's not a part of bev routine or not, swirl that shit y'all
wolfydoe9 points10m ago
With the new ice cups we can't really mix the espresso and syrup together anymore. It has to be the ice and syrup that will instantly cool the cups down before the cup melts
trentablondelatte [OP]30 points10m ago
really?? i’ve always mixed it and never had a problem
wolfydoe18 points10m ago
You might have the regular cups, they are rolling out these new compostable cups they suck so much. Any heat at all makes them instantly melt and they crack with pressure causing giant leaks
trentablondelatte [OP]14 points10m ago
yeah i’m assuming we still have the regular cups cause we poor the shots right into the cups
[deleted]1 points10m ago
[deleted]
Jaded_Fun_71334 points10m ago
Yes we can they have to put effort in it but it can be done I will never hand off a drink that looks like that
capsule_of_anxiety11 points10m ago
I mean you could still swirl the syrup/sauce in if you pull the shots into a shot glass, then have the syrup in the iced cup already. Pour the milk in first then simultaneously pour in the espresso so it’s cool but still well mixed. But then ofc add the ice and lid and lightly swirl the cup before handing off the drink.
lewabwee4 points10m ago
I haven’t noticed the cups melting. Did you see them melt or was this something you were told? Now I’m concerned.
wolfydoe5 points10m ago
We got the new ones a couple of months ago, maybe cause I'm in a plastic ban state but it's cool to watch. They shrink up with any heat but are very poor quality. We have had to throw out a lot because they come cracked
lewabwee3 points10m ago
I’ve got the new ones a month ago. I haven’t seen that happen. I might have to test it out though now.
wolfydoe3 points10m ago
It's really cool looking, just throw a shot in it and watch it get all small
aspiringgrandpa2 points10m ago
i HATE those cups. we only got a box of them once for some reason and i pray it never happens again even though i know it will 😭
PlaneJupiter8 points10m ago
Yeah if you get your drink like that, the baristas either didn’t know/weren’t taught, or are lazy as heck and aren’t doing things correctly
gleeful17 points10m ago
Just ask for it “stirred” when you order it. As swirling is not an actual part of beverage routine some baristas do not do it. Simple solution is to simply ask when you place the order. 😊
dthomp080615 points10m ago
Swirling the sauces with espresso is actually part of the beverage routine. It says it on the receipe cards.
trentablondelatte [OP]6 points10m ago
perfect thanks friend !
AlkalineTime5 points10m ago
All about that barista swirl
Over-Commercial-67454 points10m ago
That’s so weird cause whenever I make a drink, I always swirl the cup as espresso goes in, or if i am filling a cup that has syrup with cold brew. Whoever is making your drink isn’t doing it to standard.
star_pants4 points10m ago
So it is actually standard to pour iced espresso over ice, rather than pour it first and then add the ice per the recipe card.
Unfortunately this means that thick sauces like WM don't mix well, so a lot of people .have started putting ice on top of shots.
So it sounds like your problem is that the other store is doing iced espresso to standard while you're accustomed to not doing it to standard.
eckinz33 points10m ago
Idk about you but I would feel bad giving customers drinks without mixed ingredients. I don’t think there’s anyone out there that prefers their drink in layers.
star_pants7 points10m ago
There are, the whole point of the iced caramel macchiato is to drink it in layers so you have the sweet milk as a finisher.
I will say that 9 times out of 10 I will do shots before ice because most people are accustomed to it now, however that doesn't mean that you should be surprised if someone makes it to standard instead.
Edit: the shaken espressos are also supposed to be layered drinks, with a layer of espresso foam, a dash of milk, and sweetened shots on the bottom
eckinz14 points10m ago
Yeah homie there’s a difference between a machiato and an espresso with syrup just sitting at the bottom of the cup
ThrowawayTheOmlet3 points10m ago
“I don’t think there’s anyone out there that prefers their drink in layers”
I’m not disagreeing with you on the iced espresso bit, but you kind of missed their point entirely. They were correcting you for saying no one wants a layered drink, when many of the drinks on the menu are layered on purpose, and plenty of people want it that way.
megs12887 points10m ago
Anytime I have an ice first type of drink I’ll do ice the. Pump syrup over the ice and pour espresso..melts the syrup
Jeffyhere435 points10m ago
When has it been “standard” to give a customer a drink they won’t like?
dlcksuck2 points10m ago
Has this changed recently? When I trained two years ago the standard was espresso before ice and I haven’t heard anything about a change
Motor_Intention_43241 points10m ago
yea it changed after summer 2 i think someone said above. if it's the regular syrups like vanilla i do it to the new standard but when it's the WM and reg M i always do it the old way bc people complain and honestly it jsut makes the drink sad
dlcksuck1 points10m ago
Summer 2 last year? Where can I find the standard? Not saying I don’t believe you, but it just seems dumb to pour the espresso over the ice because it just immediately melts
Motor_Intention_43241 points10m ago
aaee78 mentioned below my bad thought it was above.
Motor_Intention_43241 points10m ago
im not sure i saw someone else's comment say it above but it would make sense bc that's when my store started changing it too. of this year is when i noticed it change. i was trained in dec
MrsOceanGrown1 points10m ago
Unless it’s a “shaken espresso” the customer has to request the shots poured over ice if it’s just shots of espresso iced. The standard is shots go into the cup and then ice last. Just like any iced Americanos or iced lattes. Carmel macchiatos go out of “routine” and are their own custom build. It is still a thing of baristas to “courtesy swirl” the shots into sauce. But not sit there stirring it.
violaaesthetic11 points10m ago
This is false. Just blatant misinformation lol
MrsOceanGrown0 points10m ago
Ok 🙃
trentablondelatte [OP]5 points10m ago
i’m learning that the new standard is ice then shots
MrsOceanGrown6 points10m ago
This is literally the problem with Reddit. People attack so easily. It’s ok to tell someone their wrong but with kindness JEEZ
aee783 points10m ago
They changed the standards start of summer 2. Hate it, after years of being told to NEVER put the ice in first, now it's ice first.
MrsOceanGrown3 points10m ago
Thank you! I was losing my mind
aee780 points10m ago
My store tried to ignore it. I think we got in trouble cause we were just ignoring the new way and the SM was like no that's dumb. Then a week or two ago, they were like we have to do it to standard.
TheGreatGatsbyTwo3 points10m ago
I HATE when fellow baristas don’t swirl in the mocha or any syrup/sauce when making drinks!
glo-frog3 points10m ago
I hate that this happens! It’s in the barista training to swirl the thick syrups with the espresso before pouring milk!! Even with regular mocha and PSL which are thinner 🥲 I just trained a barista and chose to observe her online training because it has changed a lot since I started 3 years ago. Even then I was trained to swirl shots with syrups. It’s common sense and standard y’all.
Edited: PSL* not pal (autocorrect)
capsule_of_anxiety12 points10m ago
That IS the proper standard build for an iced espresso beverage with any kind of syrup or sauce added as a flavor.
Queue your shots, catch into iced cup with pumps of syrup/sauce, swirl cup as shots pour. Pour milk of choice to top black line, add appropriate size scoop of ice, top with lid. Swirl cup gently.
That’s the proper way to build a drink like a standard iced vanilla latte, for example. Or a standard iced white mocha. That’s company standard.
Not every barista cares enough to do it. Some are just lazy, or weren’t trained properly, or just don’t catch on and do it their own way out of habit. I was a barista trainer for 3 years at a corporate store and just recently started at it again but in a licensed store and they’re about to promote me after a month. It just helps to pay attention and follow standards. It improves beverage quality, customer satisfaction, connection scores and customer’s we get to come back.
edreesmiraki2 points10m ago
theres nothing for people to get upset about, isnt it standard to mix it as the espresso is pouring??
trentablondelatte [OP]2 points10m ago
i just talked to my manger and she said it is standard to swirl it in with shots
Sea-Nectarine-15222 points10m ago
You shouldn’t feel bad but I get it. Even if people are saying you can stir it yourself. Even with a straw, once there’s ice in there, it is really hard to mix! Your frustration is valid I would say
Snarfungus2 points10m ago
when i was trained i was told to swirl the cup with thick syrups/sauces after espresso is added so the syrup doesn’t stay at the bottom
Appropriate_Ad28622 points10m ago
I would just change your order. Order your drink but add shaken at the end. It would be more stirred.
Adorable-Dingo68681 points10m ago
Maybe order as a shaken espresso instead?
trentablondelatte [OP]2 points10m ago
i don’t rlly want a shaken espresso tho:( i don’t like the foam after it’s shaken.
heyoliviasmith1 points10m ago
THANK YOU!!! this is a huge pet peeve of mine.
[deleted]1 points10m ago

LowYam40601 points10m ago
Ask for the ice first then white mocha then shots then milk and then extra ice if you want
trentablondelatte [OP]0 points10m ago
i would but the white mocha still doesn’t mix when they do that:( i’ll just have to add to stir the drink
Ballerinacole1 points10m ago
You can always ask for it stirred when you’re ordering. It prevents you from having to ask to have it stirred after preparation.
[deleted]1 points10m ago
[deleted]
1PinkPanda1 points10m ago
I see nothing wrong, if done right there shouldn’t be syrup all at the bottom. Idk 🤷🏻♀️ maybe it was a rush and they forgot to shake. That’s the only reasoning I can think of. Just know if they find it annoying, they are probably just upset with themselves for not doing it properly ☺️ I know I always am when I forget a step.
badatlife158 points10m ago
I’m fairly certain OP was not talking about an iced shaken espresso, just an iced espresso. Those don’t get shaken.
mewwissa-2 points10m ago
Order it stirred. Problem solved.
floofxs2-2 points10m ago
Just say it when you order it, yea we should swirl it so the white chocolate melts in but since you know it doesn’t happen a lot ask so they put stirred on there. It seems like an easy solution.
floofxs24 points10m ago
Well you said every time in your post and that it gives you anxiety. You work at a SB you know we don’t mind stirring it more, and you also know to prevent it more often to ask while ordering. I don’t mean any of that rudely although it maybe it reads that way but just more so you’re giving yourself problems that you don’t need to have. Ask for it stirred first, and if it doesn’t happen ask later. You are not bothering anyone by having your drink made the way you prefer.
trentablondelatte [OP]1 points10m ago
i mean it happens here and there so idk what to expect but i’m just gonna ask for it stirred next time
eckinz3 points10m ago
It’s frustrating though bc swirling shots and syrup is the standard and takes literally zero effort, you shouldn’t have to remind baristas to make drinks the right way…
As someone that also has social anxiety, being that “extra” customer that says “and can you make sure the syrup and shots are actually stirred…” is not a good feeling.
If you don’t have social anxiety though I don’t blame you for not getting it.
Comfortable-Plane944-30 points10m ago
…. Or you could stir your own drink
trentablondelatte [OP]12 points10m ago
i usually try to but when there is a lot of ice it’s hard to stir it with a straw. I mean would u be upset if u ordered a drink and they left all the stuff at the bottom where it was hard to stir. I just thought it was a mandatory thing to do cause i always learned to stir the syrup with the shots even if it was a simple latte. Not trying to be rude
badatlife159 points10m ago
When you order ask for it stirred, they updated the standard recently to be syrups, then scoop of ice, then shots, and then milk. If you ask for it stirred (just like a caramel macchiato, not being extra) they will mix the syrup and shots together before the ice.
trentablondelatte [OP]5 points10m ago
perfect! Thank you for letting me know. I just have a bunch of modifications on my order so i feel bad adding another thing. And i usually stir all customer drinks because if i don’t they will have me remake it so i thought it was just standard we do it
badatlife152 points10m ago
Yeah it used to be standard but doing it this way makes it so that there is less confusion about how full the cup should be, because the shots over the ice melt the ice. We’ve been trying at our store to ask customers if they want it mixed together, to try and prevent remakes.
eckinz2 points10m ago
Is this new standard somewhere on the partner hub?
I find it hard to believe they changed an integral part of the drink making process that has been the same for like… ever.
Especially when changing it to syrup>ice>shots rather than syrup>shots>ice since that just makes the drink flavorless.
badatlife153 points10m ago
I’m pretty sure it’s on the updated beverage recipe card for an iced espresso. Our SM was the one who told us we all need to be making sure we are following this standard. I agree the change does not make sense.
gingergal-n-dog2 points10m ago
... But it should all still get shaken before it goes into the serving cup. No one should need to ask for their ise to be stirred so the flavor is throughout. It sounds like this store/ barista did not add wm to the shaker, only the cup.
badatlife153 points10m ago
They didn’t say iced shaken espresso, just an iced espresso.
DasTeufelkind861 points10m ago
Handy trick I learned!:
Hold the cup near the top and swirl the cup, draw ovals with the curve of your wrist, make sure the bottom of the cup is moving more than the top. That mixes better than using a straw.
If that's confusing, think of drawing a large circle with one of your fingers while holding the cup, that should help.
insertusernameplease1 points10m ago
Or you could make it to standard?
GildedDreamer25-28 points10m ago
this is a subreddit for baristas to communicate with each other, not for a place to complain to us when we aren’t being paid
trentablondelatte [OP]19 points10m ago
but i am communicating with other baristas….I literally learned that from other baristas after posting this.
