Tips for Becoming a Barista (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by No_Firefighter_5185
I am a college student and want to get my first job. My nearby Starbucks is hiring and I really want to work there. I have been watching videos and learning about working at Starbucks as a barista. So far, I have been studying the drinks and quantities of shots and pumps according to sizes (and if it's iced). I want to be as proficient as possible and want to have as much prior information as I can. Is there any tips you can give me that would help me in my journey of becoming a Starbucks barista?

just apply—they will teach you that kind of stuff during training. don’t try and learn recipes on your free time when starbucks will pay you to do it!

agree except if you’re not too sharp with memorization, i’d recommend maybe using flashcards to brush up on drink recipes, which still isn’t too bad since they all pretty much follow the same basic formulas. i personally got the hang of cold bar drinks quickly, and then needed a little extra time between training sessions to remember hot bar drinks. queueing shots, which drinks called for half pumps vs full pumps, etc.

Thank you! I will definitely make flash cards to accelerate my learning.

Try to start at a slower cafe store rather than drive through. I just finished training this 17 year old at our high volume drive store. It’s her first job. She knows her stuff, but looks like a lost puppy and i feel so bad. She’s super eager and willing to learn, but it’s just so chaotic and busy at our store especially because we are trying to hire more people. She hasn’t had a lot of slow time to get fast at positions.

Recommend getting some relevant experience first tbh, any food service job. The training isn’t the best if you’re going into it completely cold and you get trained on every aspect of the job right off the bat as opposed to places like McDonald’s which only train you on one area to start. Starbucks is a pretty decent job but it’s not a great first job.
