I want to learn how to do the pull. (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’ve brought this up to my shifts a few times and they told me to talk to my SM about it because she wants more people to learn how to do it (currently it’s just the shifts and one barista who knows how). She was super happy to hear, and keeps scheduling me to do it but the shifts keep having one of the other shifts do it or if the barista is there, they’ll do it. I’d get it if they were on a time crunch and need it done ASAP, but half the time the shift and whoever does the pull stand around and talk to each other.
I don’t want to keep pestering my SM about it because it’s definitely not a first priority thing. I just want to be able to jump in and help out.
Edit: just because I want to learn how to do the pull doesn’t mean I want to become a shift 🙃 I don’t care if it’s not in my job description or whatever. I just want more variety in my day than being tossed between drive thru, bar and doing floors.

for all of y’all saying that the pull is just a shift task and whatever-it’s not my friends. you can literally log in to the app to do the pull with baristas numbers. the only things that can only be done by shifts are cash counting and inventory counts. you definitely can do the pull as a barista.

seconding this. our SM/ASM have been saying for a while that they want to have the barista trainers trained to do the pull so that SSVs can focus on running the floor & have more flexibility in playbuilding; I’ve been doing the pull since before I even became a barista trainer (and yes, i can log in to the iPod and the iPad app as a non-SSV)

But I do inventory counts logged into my non-shift numbers? And we have two regularly scheduled non-shifts that for it every Wednesday and Sunday. Or are you talking about another count?

inventory counts can only be done by a shift supervisor. as far as i’ve seen, non shifts cant even get in to the inventory counts app on the ipod. the pull however can be logged into and done by any barista.

You are correct! I used to do the counts for a coworker when they were expecting, however they had to log in first.

I mean I get what everyone is saying, but we use the counts as a way for people who don’t get many hours to get at least those few hours. We didn’t always, but it has made shifts run smoother and uninterrupted for the last five or so years. It’s nice to just come in for an hour or two to count then leave with a drink because I technically did work lol

inventory counts are only shift responsibilities. if your manager is allowing that, it’s a bigggg no no, and it can only be done by shifts. before i became a shift i’ve tried to log in to the inventory count, it doesn’t work.

This is true!! Technically it’s the supervisors job but it’s not unheard of for baristas to learn to do the pull as well.

The stuff I get paid more for now as a shift is deploying people in positions, giving out breaks, managing cash, placing orders, handling the people too difficult for baristas, and stuff like that. There really isn’t anything super special about pulling shit out of the freezer. Being in the back with your AirPods in is a win over doing floor work—take the opportunity to get a break from customers if you’re offered it.

Dunno where the misinformation is coming from. Baristas are allowed to do the pull—if you weren’t, you wouldn’t even be able to log in to the pull to thaw app. Counts and orders are another story and should be dealt with by the shift team.
And straight up as a shift, the pull is easier work than most things you or I could be doing on the floor if your store sees any kind of volume, so you’re not sticking it to the man by passing up the opportunity to be a gremlin in the back instead of dealing with customers. If you can make the same hourly wage taking stuff out of boxes and putting a date dot on it with your headphones in as you can when you’re cranking out 3 drinks a minute why would you not want to do that instead? 🤷🏼

Idk! I get why people don’t want to get taken advantage of, and baristas definitely shouldn’t feel like they need to run the floor or do the actual shifts only things—that’d be inappropriate.
But really with the pull we just need to have enough confidence that you understand how fifo works and then explain the app to you. Baristas rightly get really upset when shifts hide in the back and don’t help, so take the opportunity to get off the floor and make your shift do the more stressful floor work lol.

Exactly! I’d never agree to running the floor, inventory, money management etc. None of that I’m qualified for. I have no idea how being paid a few dollars per hour dictates whether or not you can count & pull frozen things out of a box lol

Incorrect—pulls are ok for baristas to do. They shouldn’t be doing inventory counts or orders but pulls are fine.

Baristas have the ability to do it—the apps that are truly shift and SM only, I.E. IMS and cash management, are access locked to where baristas can’t use them—and if you’re really about to nitpick, baristas who are looking to promote are told that they SHOULD try acting as play caller here and there to prepare for the promotion. And That’s on page 29 of the ops guide FYI since you want to get into the weeds about standard. The whole reason the shift supervisor training plan is so short compared to barista training is because it is expected that instead of the shifts acting like baristas are below you, you’ll help them learn stuff.
But also use common sense y’all. It’s taking stuff out of a box and putting it on a tray—if a barista is down to do it then they can get a break from the floor and the supervisor can be available to coach and support. Win for everyone.

Yea literally I think some people here are missing the point. Value yourself and your worth. Pulls are shift supervisor work, and they get paid to do that. Don’t do more than what you are getting paid to do.

Its really not like “extra” work or more difficult or even above the pay grade of a barista. You get off the floor and take food out of a freezer and date it. It’s quite literally the easiest most relaxing task you could be doing at a Starbucks.

To add on to the other reply with more specificity, we count every pastry in the front that is thawed, pulling the ones expiring that day and setting them aside to be used first or donated end of shift. Then we put that number into the app, which is subtracted from the par (standard number of things). We take that sum and pull however many we need from the freezer to the thawing rack. There’s an 18 hour pull, done in the morning for us and it’s fast, it’s all the hot breakfast items/egg bites. They take a long time to thaw. 3 hour pull is all pastries and is kind of a bitch. Probably takes 30 minutes, more if it’s a lot you gotta restock. Oh and you gotta day dot the items/the racks holding the items.

sorry i dont exactly have advice on this situation but i just wanted to say im not sure what the other comments are talking about, a barista can do the pull so long as they know how to do it and got permission to. i actually had one of my SSVs thats been with the company 5+ years say that at her old store they had a team full of seasoned baristas so on days she didnt feel like doing the pull, she had one of her baristas do it and so that way she could help and be on the floor and it ended up working out. so unless something changed recently you should definitely be able to if you want!
edit/side comment: im also going to talk to my SM about learning how to do the pull too, because ive expressed interest in it as well and id do anything just sit in the back and pull sandwiches and not have to deal with customers ❤️

the point is not if they’re right or wrong. the point is that it’s not the baristas job to do the pull and baristas don’t get paid to do so. if a barista wants to learn how to do the pull, then i’m sure that’s fine and just depends on your SM. everyone is just saying that they wouldn’t do something they don’t get paid to do, and i get that cus i wouldn’t either.

lol this isn’t really true. If a baristas login works for the app, which is does, they can do it.

it is not in baristas' job description, therefore they should not be responsible for doing it. the task belongs to the ssv on shift only.

If a barista is in back doing the pull, the shift is out on the floor. What’s the problem? And the pull is not a shift only task. Barista logins work for the pull to thaw app & all that’s necessary is an understanding of fifo and being shown how the app works.

Usually what I do is I’ll ask my shift when I get it in if I can do the pull if nobody is already doing it. I would do that and tell the shift you want to learn to do it. That way when the time comes for the pull, the shift knows you asked to do it. I just to do both 18Hr and 3 HR pulls but we do have one specific shift at my store that likes to do it every shift he works. 🤷🏻♀️
