I have a regular who gets this. He used to just get a matcha water but then the SM started making baristas ring it up as a custom iced tea + matcha. A matcha lemonade w/ no lemonade is cheaper, less confusing, and now he can mobile order it. (He never cared about the price, anyway… he just likes matcha water.)

It’s just tea. Mixing with hot water is the traditional preparation. Having it iced isn’t much of a stretch.

I meant traditional as in pre-Starbucks Japan. I don’t think Starbucks has ever offered a plain matcha tea as a menu item but they should.

They can't order that. Waters are not allowed to be customized. You have to ring it up as a custom iced tea with whatever customization

When it first became a real drink, there wasn’t water. Then they updated it to include water, with very little communication that it had been updated.
