Does it get easier? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by evadunmow
Hey, I’m 17 and have recently been hired as a barista at a local starbucks and have only done 2 shifts. I start college in a few weeks too so am part time. I’m finding it really hard to fit in, everyone seems to know their place and are super close with eachother and so I just feel like a spare piece at work. As mentioned, i’ve only done 2 shifts and know how to make a few drinks, still in training, but I’m finding it really hard to fit in and find my place.
I’m also stressing about my work-life balance when I start college, obviously i won’t be able to work as much but don’t know how to balance it and speak to my manager about it.

How long did it take you guys to integrate into your barista role?

Take it day by day, not very starbucks is full of friendly baristas but if you stay true to yourself- include in group discussions or get close to one of the SSVs (like ask if they need help with anything) it can go a long way and make you feel comfy in your workplace 😊

Ur only on day 2, do not stress about the "fitting in" part! Everything will come with time. Like the other commenter said, not every single person u meet us guna be nice or inviting. So u be u and take it day by day 🙂

it takes 3 months to feel comfortable in your role and 6 months to get really good at it. don't stress it after 2 days

Yes, it gets easier. My advice is to treat your job as a job only. Don't try to make friends, try hard not to get your feelings hurt if someone says something kurt to you, do a good job yourself but don't worry if someone else is doing a bad job. I had way too many expectations of my job when I started it. No one wanted to be my friend, people take their frustrations out on you when you're doing nothing wrong then they never apologize, and I got fussed at several times for trying to teach people things. This is a job only, and the people who work there tend to not care about it very much and to be unprofessional.

I started at sixteen, and it really does get better. I agree with the person who said it takes two to three months- for me I think it was three before I felt totally secure in my place as a barista, and had made some amazing friends in my coworkers. Keep at it because the job can be so rewarding !

It will get easier, you’ve only been through two shifts pls don’t stress, trust me if it makes u feel any better I’m 24 & barely on my 7th week of work where I feel I’m starting to get the hang of things/actually get comfortable with my coworkers!!

the first month will always be the hardest but as long as u stay committed to getting better/asking questions everyday you will start to enjoy it more as time goes on, don’t be afraid to make mistakes ur only human & ur skills will definitely improve everyday :)

believe me, it does get easier. i’m 18 & started working @ sbux mid-late june, having it be my first job ever. at first i was so overwhelmed every single day & didn’t feel like i fit at all. fast forward two months & i love it. i feel like i totally belong there & i’m dreading having to transfer from my store in a few weeks to start college. when i first got to my store i was SO intimidated & honestly considered leaving it. now that’s crazy to think about because it feels so right now. it will get better. don’t be too hard on yourself. starbucks has sort of a sink or swim method to starting but trust me, you will get the hang of it & it’ll be okay

Give it time - it takes time and practice to get the barista work down. It can be difficult to get to know new baristas because so many quit after a week or two. It gets less overwhelming I promise and having a positive attitude towards learning the job goes a long way towards making friends! at work :-)
