One of our shifts supervisors that we all hate btw. Bought a coffee master apron and told everyone that she went through the program even tho she hasn’t worked at Starbucks for a year. Like how dumb does she think we are???(self.starbucksbaristas)

Year wait can be waived. The apron doesn't mean much out of Starbucks.
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]13 points10m ago
In what circumstances tho? I’m just curious
MemeMaven41 points10m ago
If you can accomplish more in a few months than in a whole year, you could be selected. I just got lucky I guess since my manager was cool and the DM was too.
Just roll up like James Hoffmann everyday.
The black apron shouldn't be used for authority. If they're doing that, what a clown! We literally just know bean trivia and techniques that should probably only stay in Starbucks and have little opportunities for application.
You're supposed to get pins from each unit too. A tiger, latte art, a green one with 5 cups on it, and a coffee academy 200 one. The DM is supposed to approve this and the shift supervisor probably should've printed out their certifications that you can find at the end of each unit too.
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]18 points10m ago
That’s why I’m mad is because she is using it as an authority gain. But for our store specifically my sm says it has to be a year.
MemeMaven23 points10m ago
We are the McDonalds of coffee; a Dairy Queen even. If you look at the coffee academy 300 flash cards, anyone can memorize that in a night. Those are exactly what's on the online test too.
I'm sorry, it sounds like they need to humble themselves. You could probably pretend to be really interested coffee and ask them a lot of questions about what grind is fit for which roast and method of brewing.
Wonderful-Put-597233 points10m ago
Having done the damn program 3 times now, I take offense at that! When we got a new DM she demanded we be recertified every year til she figured out how many training hours that used!
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]12 points10m ago
I mean honestly tho. I know coffee master doesn’t exactly mean much but I feel like we baristas dedicate so much of our life to Starbucks and we work and go by the rules and for someone to just come with half assed work ethic and attitude problem think that’s it’s fine to just buy it. Like no not okay
Wonderful-Put-59722 points10m ago
It's straight fraud. If you do the course properly it definitely grows your knowledge!
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]3 points10m ago
I’m excited I finally get to do it
Wonderful-Put-59722 points10m ago
Just do it thoroughly and and enjoy the process so you're not a fraud!
starbucksbarist281 points10m ago
It used to be a requirement that you had to retake is every two years when it originally came out, maybe she got confused by that?
anitasdoodles18 points10m ago
Lol I worked with a bitch at a licensed store, who has never worked for the Starbucks company, order a black apron and told people she’s a fuckn coffee master. Like girl, two years making coffee at Target doesn’t make you a CM 😂
Decent-Marionberry635 points10m ago
We had a guy who was a coffee master that quit and he gave his black apron to another shift. She wore it all the time cuz it “matched her aesthetic more than the green”. Our sm eventually told her to stop wearing it cuz people were getting upset
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]2 points10m ago
As she should
whatitdobabyboo2211 points10m ago
It’s not that serious
shanswen6 points10m ago
it really isn’t idk why people care so much.
Lightheaded_gamer4 points10m ago
I no longer took the # of years seriously when I came back to Starbucks (before leaving again).
The first time I left was due to the massive lockdown from Covid and while everyone was in a mass freak out not knowing the seriousness of Covid for sure; I was the few that left Starbucks.
Fast forward to when I got back. Even tho I was given the same partner number I was given a year one pin even tho I worked for starbucks for about 3 years.
This is why I say I no longer care. Not out of anger that they gave it but because there’s no real reward to the amount of effort and time you put into it. Ive learned from there to focus on myself and the people that matters.
So if anyone does not say anything about your shift cutting corners for the black apron? Don’t let it get to you. It does not mask your efforts and your accomplishments.
iodge3 points10m ago
you have to work a year for it?? i’ve started my training and i’ve only been working a few months D:
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]2 points10m ago
I guess you can do it even if you haven’t worked a year but my store specifically makes a be at Starbucks a year. It probably also helps if you are good at your job and are actually helpful and don’t call out every other shift. This shift has been written up because she has called out 17 times in the time she has worked.
iodge2 points10m ago
yeah she needs to be fired at that point
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]2 points10m ago
I already know she won’t
Zealousideal-Star4482 points10m ago
The apron doesn’t signify any other authority or anything like that. Just means you sat in front of a computer for extra hours and burnt your tounge tasting black coffee. It means if a customer has specific questions about coffee (like recommendations for what type of they want xyz) we can point to the black apron and ask. It’s not saying your manager or barista or anything like that
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]3 points10m ago
Someone plz tell my shift that
Zealousideal-Star4481 points10m ago
Ask her how many units are in the coffee master program, how long did it take, ask very random questions about coffee any questions you have. The apron is to represent knowledge not power. Does your sm know? You can casually say “hey I saw xyz finished the coffee master training even tho they haven’t been here a year, could you tell me what I need to do to do that too?! I would love more education on coffee pairings and the science behind brewing!”
Kritter822 points10m ago
This made me chuckle because one of my coworkers transferred to and other store and worked there for a year before coming back with a black apron, he got it from his girlfriend because he transferred right after the program had been stopped. Well my SM (who hired him in the first place) one mentioned it in a SSV meeting that she was so proud of him cuz he worked hard for that apron and none of us other SSVs had one yet
smoolbeean2 points10m ago
ngl i want the apron cause it matches my aesthetic more. but like also i actually want to do the coffee master program
chlmen51 points10m ago
Honestly it’s not that serious… it’s really not that hard to get a black apron and definitely doesn’t take blood sweat and tears like some people are saying lol. It’s been easier since they brought it back. You’re only allotted 8 hours of training for the program… definitely not as extensive as ppl are making it seem. Sure it grows your knowledge but it’s not like taking a semester long course or anything lol. If you want a black apron, just do the courses. This is coming from an SSV who has also finished them. If you have an issue with a supervisor, then have a conversation with your SM, your DM, or call partner resources. You could also easily become a shift supervisor if you’re passionate about Starbucks as much as you say and dedicate so much time to it? Having been a barista myself who transferred to get promoted, sometimes you may just have to do things for yourself.

I have been working at Starbucks for two years now. Here is how I earned my apron and honestly, I feel very offended when people tell me I don’t deserve it because I worked my ass off for my apron.
First, I was a candidate for the program before it was closed down during the pandemic. I come from a store where almost all of the shifts were coffee masters (actually went through the program). My manager knew how disappointed I was that the course was closed and decided to train me (via training hours) to become one. He used his old texts books, made me taste all of the coffees in the store (I even traveled to different stores to taste their coffee), taught me on different brewing methods/pairings (I even bought outside food to pair with coffees), made me take a lot of the asu programs, and prepare a brew for him, my dm, and shift supervisor. I also had to take a test on all the material I knew. I also had to lead coffee tastings regularly in my store. At end of my training (which lasted for about three months) he symbolically gave me his apron.
I put a lot of fing time/effort into my coffee master apron and yeah, I get offended when people talk down to me because I earned it differently. If I could take the program I would (I leave for college in two weeks) and I worked for it in a different way when Covid was prevalent and the program wasn’t available. I put a lot of research into coffee outside of work and did my best to learn and earn what wasn’t offered because I care about my job and wanted to answer customers questions. It was a different journey but I know more about coffee than the coffee master (went through the course 4 years ago) in my store and I’m usually the first one people go to when there is a question.
What are your opinions?
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]1 points10m ago
I honestly love that tho. You actually earned that apron, you didn’t just go online to buy it to have a title. You put time and effort and you actually cared about you job. I don’t care how people go through it to earn the coffee master and I know it’s just an apron and should t be a big deal but when my shift just bought, that is the problem I have with it. She doesn’t care about Starbucks the way most people who work there. She only uses it for the discount and a lot of us think she is buying and selling cups but that’s a whole different thing. Bottom line you earned the apron one way or another even if it wasn’t “by the books”.
Medical-Branch72231 points10m ago
That actually means ALOT as I get told that “I didn’t earn it” even though I put so much into it. It’s a symbol of the hard work and knowledge I have gained because of my training and I totally understand the difference between your shift and people that actually care about the program. Sure it’s just an apron but what happens when someone genuinely has a question and no one knows how to answer it?
Side note. I once knew a store that ordered black aprons for all of the baristas (shift did weekly orders) because they looked cool. You can’t control anyone but yeah….yah know.
laurenelizabeth022 [OP]1 points10m ago
Honestly tho. If I asked her a question about it o am positive she wouldn’t know it. When people buy a coffee master apron it devalues it. There is so much actual knowledge that goes into it that people don’t realize. But the fact that you did it outside the program because you couldn’t do, and you did it not knowing that you were going to be given an apron by your shift or you sm days a lot. I just find it annoying because I really do like working for Sbux. I dedicate so much time to my job, I spend more time here than my actual house.
Medical-Branch72231 points10m ago
Also, if your store isn’t union, best way to settle the score is to earn one of your own.
Medical-Branch72231 points10m ago
I feel this though. I wanted to learn more about our product to understand my job better. Also yes, I didn’t know I would get an apron. He told me that they stopped adding them to the weekly order and then told me I earned his so yes, I didn’t go into it for the apron yet my new shifts (I transferred stores) love to devalue me all the time.
