It’s pretty f-ed up that we are congratulated by coworkers when we quit! (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’ve had no less than 15 coworkers text to congratulate me after hearing yesterday was my last day! That’s pretty fucked up when that’s literally everyone’s response. Or I got “you’re so lucky.” A few times too. Makes me feel 200% relief in my decision to leave.

i say it bc usually people are moving on to a better job or one they really wanted lol, not bc this job is so bad

yeah. one of my old coworkers found a job at this tech company—gets double the pay, better benefits, better vacation and sick pay, etc. it was sad to see him go but he’s thriving.

Yeah exactly. What are they supposed to say? Would “Good riddance, gtfo” be better?

With every company I’ve ever left or had friends leave, there’s almost always people saying “congratulations” or whatever (or even a farewell party!) because it usually meant that someone was going on to something better, and people are happy for them. Starbucks certainly isn’t perfect, and obviously there may be more to this person’s story, but I don’t think their experience as they wrote it says anything particularly negative about the company. If anything it shows how much their coworkers care for them.

Edit: even if they’re not going on to “something better,” people might still just be congratulating someone for making a bold (and probably tough decision) that they’re happy with. It’s worth congratulating no matter how shitty or amazing the job was.

it is due to the fact that starbucks is one of the worst jobs out there and I have done some shitty jobs. toxic environment, terrible customers, leadership is a joke, products are filled with chemicals, no transparency only misdirection and corporate does not care. happy you broke free of the hell that is starbucks - best of luck.

Agreed but the "filled with chemicals" its a very misleading statement lol

filled w chemicals ? can u explain i just started working as a barista):
Ordinary-Theory-8289 4 points 10m ago
Everything that exists in the world is “full of chemicals” lmao

I’m just excited when people get to go on to bigger and better!

I.. what.. are we supposed to say? Most people see barista the way they see any fast food job or receptionist or secretary position -- it's not a career, it's a stepping stone. Congratulations is usually in order for people who have finished stepping and are going to the next stone.
Old_Specific_1233 7 points 10m ago
if it helps i tend to say congratulations with the intent that I am excited they are moving on to a new chapter in their life but i am also not close with any coworkers so I wouldn't respond the way your coworkers have 😄
rudebii 7 points 10m ago
Yeah, literally everyone would rather be doing something else, or at least get paid more.

I love this job, but I’m also happy for people making the life decisions that are best for them! I have to quit soon to go to college and transfer didn’t work out- I want that to be a positive experience, even though I love the job
