i hate the pastry case (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by injeolmitoast
it feels so wasteful to prepare all that food every day just to throw it away :( i wish we just had a paper menu with photos or something

i was just talking about this! starbucks canada does a pastry case with pictures and i feel like thats a much better way to showcase the different items without wasting so much product! my store has a high volume of unhoused customers and it’s heartbreaking to think that the food we throw out could have been someones meal.

Thats so much better! There’s nothing more unappetizing than coming in at 5pm to see a breakfast sandwich that was set out at 5am

it’s amazing. we don’t waste really anything anymore.

I want 3d printed food. It'd be a HUGE cost up front, but would eventually save a lot compared to throwing out one of each item, every day, per store.

honestly was thinking this too, like how oftentimes asian restaurants have plastic/wax display food
houjichacha 21 points 10m ago
The corporate argument is that people buy less food if there isn't a physical representation, but I frankly don't see the point when they're pushing drive thru so hard.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 11 points 10m ago
They’re actually phasing out pastry cases because they determined it didn’t have any significant effect on food sales

*Good.*

We had such a bad problem with flies at our store we stopped filling it, then we got rid of it completely. Now it's our handoff plane.
Pitiful-Smoke-9547 1 points 10m ago
how does that work? /gen
EuniceBKidden 1 points 10m ago
Honestly it's been pretty awesome. It makes the whole area look cleaner, imo.
Pitiful-Smoke-9547 2 points 10m ago
no but how? isn't it a box? aren't the registers right next to it?
EuniceBKidden 2 points 10m ago
Oh! The pastry case itself got removed, and now the bare counter is where we have our handoff plane (our store is super old and our original handoff plane is tiny). We do have to walk drinks down to the new handoff plane but it's not horrible.

I work at a store without a pastry case and I honestly miss having one. Almost every customer asks why we don’t have one and / or assumes we don’t serve food so it’s a little frustrating. I do like not having to clean it though!
BlackberryOpposite31 2 points 10m ago
Yup I just transferred to a store with no case and customers walk in, look around for a case, and then they say “you guys don’t serve breakfast sandwiches”? Even though we have a menu showcasing sandwiches.

Every time I set up the pastry case, my soul dies a little more. It's so wasteful 😭
Necessary_Low939 2 points 10m ago
I don’t even know why we have a pastry case. Not like we bake shit like other bakeries
Psychological-Tax543 1 points 10m ago
Fake food could look so real and it’s much less wasteful… not to mention the pest problem wouldn’t be nearly as bad 😪
geekgurl81 1 points 10m ago
Our store is only a year old and they didn’t put in a pastry case. Sounds like a real PITA so I’m not at all sorry, even though we probably sell a lot less food, honestly.
Almafantasma 1 points 10m ago
Especially since we never have enough labor hours to be fully staffed but we have enough money to throw out everything in the pastry case every night. I wonder how much money all of that adds up to
