Aren’t shaken espressos just iced lattes with extra shaking and Milk on top?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nobelchic
Like when people order just one shot or light ice and we have to fill the milk to the top. Isn’t that just an iced latte with extra steps? There’s so much milk in it anyway.

It has an extra shot in it as well. It's syrup, shots and ice shaken together with milk on top not mixed in. If you are asking to get like an cheaper option kinda
Appropriate_Ad28624 points10m ago
The ingredients are in the name

Yes but I’m talking about the examples I give. When someone asks for light ice or just one shot then it just becomes a shaken latte at that point.
goofygoobered5 points10m ago
it also gets half of the syrup pumps. it’s an espresso forward drink— people ordering it with extra milk are compromising the recipe
Wonderful-Put-59726 points10m ago
Nope
nobelchic [OP]-1 points10m ago
I’m saying if someone asks for light ice or just one shot then it technically becomes a latte at that point and I don’t think customers realize what an espresso drink is supposed to be.

i’m so sorry u have to keep explaining urself lmaooo. i completely understand what ur saying. they’re paying extra for a latte when they’re getting more milk to less espresso ratio. they’d be saving a buck or 2 ordering as a latte. iced shaken espressos aren’t supposed to be light ice or ordered with less shots 😭 just makes it latte ratios
Liberalmuffin4 points10m ago
yes technically. if they want more milk than the *splash* on top of the foam, then we should be charging it as such.
5AV1OR10 points10m ago
Not anymore the standard for shaken espressos is they are topped with milk not a splash :(
nobelchic [OP]5 points10m ago
Yeah this is my point it’s not a splash of milk anymore so it’s like an iced latte. Obviously with the extra shot and syrup and what not.
Liberalmuffin4 points10m ago
hmmm…. bs oat shaken espresso was advertised as a SpLaSh Of Oat MiLk
5AV1OR8 points10m ago
Yeah the updated the recipe and changed it when customers got too upset about not getting more milk when they get light ice.
Liberalmuffin4 points10m ago
well, i shall relay that to the team * thank you *

You don't charge extra for something that already comes in a drink........ Plus sbux is already so expensive, why would u WANT to charge more. That'd be like charging for milk in iced coffee, hot coffee, hot tea, cold brew, etc... That'd be ridiculous. And it's easy to forget as a barista but u have to remember how it feels to be a customer... Asking how someone's day was doesn't justify a million hidden fees and add ons for a drink, that stuff is calculated into the price. I've just always hated this mindset as a barista.
Liberalmuffin1 points10m ago
well if the amount that was* included in the price was* around 1/2 inch of product, in this case milk, when we were filling up the entire 12oz cup with that product, that is not balancing the punch of 1/2 inch of milk! i agree that the prices should not be as high as they are, but we as baristas are not in charge of the prices.

Adding milk to certain things like iced coffee, brewed coffee, hot tea... They're just part of coffee culture, using milk to lighten the drink and flavor. Shaken espresso is much more akin to iced coffee in my mind, especially as it follows the same standards in the build e.g sweetened or not with classic/syrup of choice, 2% milk default/milk of choice. Similarly to an Americano which is an espresso drink altered to replicate a brewed coffee. Pairing milk with coffee is part of coffee and it's culture. Only reason it's a charge with lattes is because the milk is the majority of the drink volume. Even if someone mods a shaken espresso making it seem closer to latte than iced coffee, they ordered and want it that way for a reason, we don't need to police it. Which we can control, along with the way we view things and assume the best in others.

Back in the day. 2013, only a bit of milk is suppose to go inside for the shaken espresso that’s why it’s cheaper than the latte. The new ones with brown sugar and toasted vanilla is like a shaken latte because of the charge so we fill it up. Therefore now people be filling up the reg shaken espresso too

They taste pretty different. Pouring the shots over ice and shaking them, especially with blonde shots, makes a much smoother taste.
peepeepoopaccount2 points10m ago
I meannnn….. kinda. But they’re also quite different. More shots, less milk that is layered and not mixed in.
nobelchic [OP]-3 points10m ago
Yes but I’m talking about the examples I give. When someone asks for light ice or just one shot.
Wonderful-Put-59721 points10m ago
Everyone just tryna save money I guess! Thanks for being so kind
rosaliecrowe1 points10m ago
All skaken esp use blonde roast espresso AND it's an extra shot 🙂
HSinvestor1 points10m ago
Depending on how strongly you shake it, this is lighter, more espresso rich, and usually more potent as a coffee beverage.
I say this, because when I prepare this type of beverage, I only have about 2 inches of room to top the drink with milk, due to the amount of frothy coffee foam that results from the shaking process.
Flowerfuls1 points10m ago
Kind of. Even with light ice I don’t think they’re getting the same amount of milk as a latte ( but obviously close ish). But I shake pretty enthusiastically so I still get a decent layer of foam even with light ice lol
Wonderful-Put-59721 points10m ago
Agreed, so when they say light ice it's important that be asked if they want extra milk or just extra room.
