Got fired for taking a sick leave (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Acrobatic_Poetry3217
I took 3 weeks of with a doctor's notice after my dad died. I got fired without them telling me a reason. Contacted my DM but they said there's nothing they can do since my SM was also on the board.

Love for all the barista out there struggling

Edit: Thank you for all the kind words and compassion you've shown me in the comments. I took it as a wake up call to go back to University. I made this post for the people who think that working here is more than a job. You don't owe them anything beyond your contract because trust me, they will cut you loose the second you become inconvenient. Loyalty has to go both ways and above anything else Starbucks exists to make money - not to be a good employer

Did you contact Sedgwick? If Sedgwick approved a leave then they can’t fire you over it.

I’m so sorry for your loss, OP. This company isn’t compassionate to needs. I was my moms caretaker and when she passed my manager demanded I be at the working meeting held later that evening. Ridiculous. I’m really sorry that happened, it’s fucked up.

I'm sorry that happened. That sucks so bad. Thank you for being a good person and taking care of your family.

My father also died recently and I took a three week LOA as well. I cannot believe you got fired for that. That's so disgusting, I am so sorry

first, im so sorry for your loss, you deserve healing and love and the company allowed you none of that. and, if this is something you might ever feel comfortable with doing, starbucks would really hate for you to anonymously take this egregious instance to the public eye. there’s no excusing firing someone after a loss and I’m sending luck your way for whatever may come next

You deserve better. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you land in a place that values you.

Fuck that. You can always find another job, but you can’t spend the rest of your life disappointed that you couldn’t mourn because of work. I’m so sorry for your loss.

That's so sad..when my best friend committed suicide I left work for like 2 or 3 months and never even went through sedgwick. My boss was also the first human i saw when i got the news and i ran to her and cried and she hugged me. My boss just gave me the few months to decide if I could handle coming back or not. This sub is really making me realize how amazing my SM is :(. I'm so sorry yall have to deal with this. Unfair. They dont deserve you anyways!!!

I’m willing to say 100% That’s not what you got fired for.

You either have prior time and attendance issues and/or the leave wasn’t approved.

Trust me I didn't give a shirt about whether the leave was approved or not. They didn't even ask me why I took it. I handed in my doctor's notice the day after he passed and received the 2 weeks notice 4 days before I was supposed to be back at work. If there was another reason they could have told me so, but they choose not to comment on it.
